    Climate Change

Just maybe there'll be some disscussion with such a politically corrupted topic to talk in.

    Re: Climate Change

Sadly, this is a politically corrupted topic, not because there is significant scientific argument over whether it is occurring, but rather whether those with special interests in avoiding the discussion attempt to divert attention by loudly denying it or by ridiculing the ideas.

The idea of man-made climate change must necessarily have repercussions because reasonable people will assume that if we caused it, we can stop it.  Since our existing activities are a major contributor to the environmental conditions that will cause climate change, we are going to have to modify our behavior.  People resist change, and will rationalize away their contributions until the truth slams them in the face.

Some of the more dramatic descriptions of flooding, doom, and extinction do not help the goal of awareness, because it sounds like "Wolf" with no sign of fangs.

    Re: Climate Change

I can't understand why there are no plans to deal with any climate change for the future. It is said that the way things are going we could experience weather conditions similar to that of the Middle Atlantic States and a little farther south. That means problems ahead for certain industries and what not for us here in NY, ( for example, the maple syrup industry could be devestated in a short amount of time due to a lessening of winter conditions and warmer temps.)
Why don't we look ahead to try and co-exist with these changing conditions? Bythat I mean we should be proactive and research possible industries and other means to replace those that will be affected by the increase in temps and changing weather conditions. The maple syrup industry may end up moving farther north into Maine or even Canada as they will probably be experiencing the weather conditions we have had the last 100+ years, and that will be suitable in that case. We need to see what is  successful south of here and take action now to implement some of these things so that when the time comes we will be prepared for the changes and not be left without something to take the place of what will no longer work here. Any industry that may be affected should be looking now, and that includes the ski/winter entertainment industry, construction industry, and agriculture industry to name a few.
The government should act now to allocate funding to look into making these changes now so there will be a smoother transition when the time comes and we need to change our ways.

    Re: Climate Change

While planning ahead would be the prudent thing to do, it's hard to tell what the actual effects are going to be.  While the overall process might be a slightly warmer Earth, that does not mean that every place will be.  The real way to look at global warming is to understand that the primary effect is an increase in energy in the atmosphere.  In a very simplistic sense, it means we'll get warmer, but in a more complex system like the interaction of the oceans, land, atmosphere, and incoming sunlight, it probably means we'll see more dramatic weather activity.  A warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapor, so we might well see more rainfall, but because water vapor holds more energy than dry air, that might be accompanied by stronger storms. Dryer areas could well become even drier.  The only predictable outcome is that coastal areas will see rising sea levels as polar ice melts.

Guessing what will work and what won't can be done in an educated fashion, and being prepared is always wiser than just waiting to see what will happen.  To expect a Government that was calling global warming a hoax or bad science to prepare for its effects is just silly.  I doubt that even a change in administrations would make much difference in the approach.  Congress and the Executive branch almost always end up reacting to things rather than planning for possibilities.
