    The Olympics

Well, it is that time again.  The olympics are here and we are now in the third day of competition.  I just wanted to share my take on the contemporary olympics.

I believe that nowadays, the olympics are losing their true meaning.  What I mean is that nowadays, the olympics are becoming too much dog eat dog.  The nations of the world are believing they have something to prove and are using this to feel that they have to beat a nation or nations that they have something against.  It is not the friendly competition it used to be anymore.  it is becoming a war almost between nations.  My feeling here is that this is supposed to be a friendly competition where all the nations of the world come together as friends to have fun and to maybe take home some medals for their nations and to help each other out.  If you have seen chariots of fire, this was based on the 1924 summer olympics.  There were two british athletes, One of the athletes was jewish and he was scheduled to run on a sunday which turned out to be the day of the sabbath.  the other was a christian and he found this out and he volunteered to run the other athlete's run for him on the sunday of the sabbath.  This very act itself is i believe the true meaning of the olympics.  helping each other out and pitching in for the good of humanity.  Another act also i believe is the true meaning of the olympics.  We boycotted the 1980 Moscow olympics because the Soviet Union had invaded Afghanistan in 1979.  We felt if we showed up at the 80 olympics, this would be a slap in the face to the Afghan people because we feel that the olympics represent freedom.   nowadays however, the olympics are now being used as too much a war of politics and dog eat dog.

My take is we need to bring back some of the values of friendly competition, pitching in for humanity, and taking care of each other in not only the olympics, but in all our lives as well.

    I welcome comments on this.
