    Re: Is Boating a Sport

Is a boat license required by law? Or is this a safety plan? (Which is a good idea for new boaters) Do you need a license for a canoe? How about a small fishing boat with a small motor? I found none of these answers in your links. $60 is a lot of money for those of us who practice safe boating and have for  many years. It's the rocket boaters who go too fast and threaten to tip us little guys over that need training. Thanks...

pamelen, to my knowladge boating is like "driving." any motorized vessel you must have a license to operate. i believe that the basic course that you get licensed with covers you up to a vessel 60 feet in length, and maybe even to a certain tonnage.

    Re: Is Boating a Sport

Thanks Jeep! Last year they offered a course in Oswego, you only had to take it if you were going to operate a jet ski. We've had small fishing boats with motors for years on the river and never had to have a licence to operate them. Just the common sense safety aspect of it... I was wondering if this person who posted knew if they had changed the laws to include all craft on the water. Wonder where he went.....just posted and ran...?

    pamelen,

i'm not sure where he went. could be a post and run.i had forgoten to mention the jet skies, but you could play it safe, all motorized water craft one need to be registered with the state, and two require at minumum a safety course, others require licenses of some sort. you may check with your local police department, they can answer your question as well as checking out the web. http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/fedreqs/equipment.htm,

    http://www.nysparks.com/boating/docs/boaters_guide.pdf

they are some good resources, read up on them.

    happy boating.

    Re: Is Boating a Sport

Hi there! Sorry to take a while responding. A boating "license" is NOT required to operate a boat in New York waters unless you are between 10 and 17. A certification (also referred to as a boating license) IS required to operate a Personal Watercraft (PWC/Jetski) in New York and most surrounding states (NJ, CT, etc).

Both CT and NJ DO require a certification for boating as well as PWC and although NY does not currently require one it is surely something being tossed around. We have a page at http://www.safeboatingnewyork.com/PWCYouth.html with some details and http://www.safeboatingnewyork.com/Regulations.html has all the regulations for CT, NJ, NY and the Federal requirements.

Any questions, feel free to write direct to info@safeboatingnewyork.com.

    Re: Is Boating a Sport

The New York Dept of More Licenses want's everyone to have a Safe Intercourse license in case they get throw around you know between thigh to thigh and to regulate the Amount of funds necessary to become licensed but if you are between the ages of 20 and 70 get ready to shell out at least 500.00 per license which is good for one toll  in thru the out door ... And you can thank FEMA for that as they want every Corporate owned American Consumer know that the 5.00 per gallon charge for Goooo is good only from 10 AM to 11 AM ..
