Suburban Propane has to be the absolute worst company I have ever dealt with. At least I know I am not the only one who has problems with this horriable company. I am going to use up all the fuel I have left in my tank. Then in the spring when I do not need my heater I am switching companies. If I have to pay to get rid of them then thats what I will do.

We used Suburban Propane for years and found them very uncooperative when we constructed our new home and wanted to continue service.  After no returned calls, we subscribed to propane service with Country Propane in Central Square.  The price is better, the people are great and we are so glad not to be dealing with Sub.Pro.

Totally agree about Ferrell Gas they are a rip off also. If you want to switch to a new company you have to keep nagging them to com and get their tank. I had Sub, for 15 years , and there is absolutely no customer loyalty at all wwith them.

Re: Propane Budget Plan Doubles; What's Your Experience?

We are propane users, however we do not buy from Suburban Propane.  All propane companies have catches in the way they sell their product.  In our case because we have a well insulated home and use under 200 gallonsa year to both heat and cook with, we have to pay an additional fifty nine cents per gallon above the going rate for propane.  This is even though we don't deliver more than twice a year so transportation costs are not a factor. It costs the customer more to be efficient.  The customer can not win on energy savings.  The comparison I was given was that if I bought one bottle of beer it would cost more per bottle than a six pack of beer.  I stated when I buy anything weighed, the costs is per pound, quart, half gallon, etc. When the government deregulated oil, the customer lost at the gas pumps, and in their home usage.  The cost of everything we purchase has increased in part due to the cost of oil in transportation of product

Re: Propane Budget Plan Doubles; What's Your Experience?

I actually had no problems with Suburban Propane until they merged with Agway.  Customer service rep from Agway is awful and very sarcastic to customers.  I cancelled my service with Agway just because of her years ago.  Moved to a new house in 2003 and just changed account to my name with Suburban from previous owner.  I too burn wood in winter and use the propane basically for hot water. Once they merged and I had to call for a delivery and got that same woman, I flipped and immediately cancelled my service with them.  I called a new company right away who I've used since 2004 with excellent service (Scharman's).  I purposely am a "call-in customer" so I regulate how much is delivered and when so I don't have outrageous bills.  Needless to say, Suburban's empty tank STILL SITS ON MY LAWN after NUMEROUS calls for them to pick it up.............we're talkin it's been sitting there since November 2004!!!!!  When I call they usually tell me a manager will call me and then say it will be "picked up this week" and nothing ever happens.  I've even asked if I can be compensated with a little cash since I've been storing it on my property for 4 years now (as I continue to mow and plow around it)!

    SUBURBAN SUCKS!!!!!!!!

I am not on a budget with Suburban Propane , but they just filled my propane tank and charged me 4.599 a gallon. I did a little research and other companies are charging around 3.00 a gallon .I have been with this company over 20 years-Including Agway for (Propane and Fuel Oil) .I was also charged 3.699 a gallon for Fuel Oil in Nov. I paid about .45 to .50 more a gallon compared to the average price.
Here are a couple of sites that might give you an idea of the current prices.

Re: Propane Budget Plan Doubles; What's Your Experience?

I'm new to propane as I recently bought a home in the Country, moving from the City.  When I called Suburban in November for pricing and to make arrangements to switch service, I was informed that I would have to pay for the full tank of propane at 1.99/gallon.  My tank was filled to 80%, I received my bill and paid it.  At the time of my call, I was informed that future fill ups were at 2.43/gallon.  They came 1 month later to fill my tank, I used 201 gallons in 1 month.  I received my bill and was charged 2.89/gallon.  I immediately called as I could not have used that much in 1 month and the price was significantly higher than what I was quoted 1 month previous.  They indicated that they made a mistake and should have been billed at 2.63/gallon.  My bill was adjustered, but I was still outraged at having to pay $535.00 for one month of proprane.  I wrote a letter to Suburban when I paid the bill as I did not get any satisfaction out of speaking to their customer representatives and did not get a response from their head quarters as well.  I have searched around for better pricing and have found that others were approximately .40 less than Suburban.  Unfortunately I will have to refill with Suburban one more time until I can make the change in Spring to a new vendor.

I have spoken to everyone that I know that uses propane and have warned them about Suburban and at least 3 friends will also be looking for new suppliers in Spring.

I will never do business with Suburban again and will be sure to do everything in my power to be sure friends/family stay away too...

Re: Propane Budget Plan Doubles; What's Your Experience?

You will be happy to know that my neighbors and I discovered that Suburban Propane was price gouging us (oil), but the company may not get away with it this time.. One neighbor switched to another company  immediately, but paid his bill in full. I switched to another company and deducted 50 cents per gallon for the whole season from my last bill, although Suburban has probably been doing it for three years and I probably should have gone back further. When I complained, Suburban told me that the surcharge was for the privilege of automatic delivery and because I had a furnace protection contract. Hey, most companies provide automatic delivery and I was paying $279.00 for the furnace protection. They also raised their furnace protection contract $80 without warning. Each time I complained the person on the phone said they would consider reducing my price per gallon as a courtesy and that someone would get back to me about it. I never got a call. Last year I discovered that Suburban miscalculated my "budget plan" and had a $1,200 credit that it was holding. I demanded a check and got off the plan. What a scam. Today I discovered that they were charging my ex-husband 75 cents more a gallon than the next highest price in the area. He contacted the attorney general's office and now Suburban Propane is under attack in Vermont. I'm going to mail my issues to the attorney generals office and hopefully get my neighbors to also. Well, that's all. Please all of you, be relentless with companies like this and by like this I mean, Vonage, Verizon, Fairpoint, Comcast.....  Sometimes they only get you for $12, but multiply that by a million. I won't even let them get me for a dime. Let's not take it any more!!!!!!!

Re: Propane Budget Plan Doubles; What's Your Experience?

I would also like to tell of my experience with Suburban Propane. I started out with Agway Energy in 2001 with a budget plan of $168.00 per mo. I am missing most of my statements but had found a couple from 2005 and on 06/20/2005 was paying $176.00 and 12/20/2005 went up to $189.00 and then one month later on 1/20/2006 jumped up to $275.00 per month.. I missed Nov and Dec payment ( I had sent them several checks in the amount of $400 - $500 prior to this) in which on Jan 12th I sent them a check in the amount of $600.00. Later on that night we ran out of fuel. When we called them to report that we were out of fuel (I had 2 small children in which one was an infant) they refused to bring us fuel. The very next day we had to pay with a debit card an additional $511.00+ before they would bring us more fuel and then charged us an additional $150.00 delivery fee. As you can imagine this paid our account off in full leaving us with a credit. I argued with them that I was paying way too much on my budget for not even and she agreed to bring my budget down to $190.00 a month. After this I made all of my payments on time but missed one payment in December of 2007. So on January 31st I sent them a payment in full including late charges of $439.15 in which they received on the Feb5th and cashed the check on Feb 6th and then on Feb 9th they left us run out of gas again. When I called to tell them that we had run out of fuel and that we had a zero balance they agreed to deliver fuel. Again they charged me an additional $150.00 on my next bill. Since then my budget has been going up every couple of months and received my new billing plan @ $345.00 per mo. I have decided to go with another company and I am in the process of writing to the attorney general on their practices. By the way we did not have a guage on our tank either even though we requested one. They told me that I could take hot water out and dump it on the tank and that I would be able to tell how much gas I had in my tank from the condensation. I am glad to be rid of them.

I worked for them and god help all the people. You may want to check your credit cards out for they hire a bunch of temps in the winter and they stole many peoples card numbers. They would order lunch and or dinner for the office on you. Thank-you for calling Suburban my behind more like thank-you for calling Suburban we like to rob you!
