    Pet Food Recall/Sick Pets

You've probably heard about the massive recall now? What are your thoughts? How can all these brands be affected? Has your pet gotten sick?

my cat would only eat the slice chicken from wegmans that was listed on the recall.  last monday I had to have her euthanized due to kidney failure.  I estimated that during the time period in which the tainted food was sold, she consumed approximately 279 bags!  I have tried over the last 3 days to contact menu foods @ the two #'s listed & have had no success!  Has anyone been able to get in touch with these people

My beautiful white cat is very sick from Iams packets. She loved this food. Even when I brought her home of Stack Hospital in Fayetteville after being there March 9,10,11 and 12, I continued to give it to her (She was so sick at this point she would only lick a little of the gravy) until I heard about the recall and stopped. She is now eating small bits of cooked chicken and tuna. Every other day we give her an IV at home. We are just trying to keep her comfortable

I have 2 cats.  About 10 days ago, one of them started vomiting and would not eat.  I left town and ask my husband to check on it when he got home. I returned home the next day and my husband and I check the cat again.  He was bloated and when my husband picked it up, it urinated blood.  I got it to the vet and he is now being treated with massive antibiotics.  the only wet food my cat eats is Specila Kitty cuts with gravy.  Really he only likes the gravy.  I heard about the recall and I'm thinking that my cat is one of the lucky ones that survived.

What the hell is going on today?????  Taco bell....peanut butter.......cat food.. What is next?  I thought there were saftey measures in place to protect consumers?  I realize that this has happened in the past, but with modern technology can't there be a better method to find out that food is tainted?

    Re: Pet Food Recall/Sick Pets

I agree pco_01. From what I understood from a gentleman whose wife worked in the lab at a Purina factory, the quality control guidelines are stricker than for human food in these pet food plants.

Raises great concerns for the quality of our food.

I believe I heard it was the glutin they had put with the pet food. A new supplier? They didn't think it had gotten into any human food. What are the inspectors doing? There are supposed to be a battery of tests run on foods and additives. Especially new ingredients. They should be put on hold, until tests are done. Someones signature is on the bottom of those test sheets. But they could have been under pressure, because they had an order to fill.

In this age of the unknown, our food supply, where it's grown, how it's handled and prepared, should be the highest of priorities in terms of protection and inspection. We've seen so many stories of sickness lately. Is anyone putting 2+2 together?

    Re: Pet Food Recall/Sick Pets

This is all scary stuff!  I fed my dogs Ol' Roy until about two months ago because they suddenly stopped eating it (wonder if they knew better?) which was strange becasue they will eat anything, we switched to kibble and bits.  I'm scared to death, my dogs are like my other children (they are both senior citizens)  I've been watching them, following them around the yard making sure they are peeing allright and no blood and so far they are acting allright........ but so many aren't and it breaks my heart.... I like animals more than most people I know.  Anon- I am so sorry to hear about your kitty, I hope he ends up okay, how sad.  What are they doing to fix this?  are they paying vet bills?  How exactly do they hope to make up for all those lost pets and broken hearts?  I can't come up with a price that would make up for losing my babies..... why did it take so many months to realize something was wrong?

    Re: Pet Food Recall/Sick Pets

I have been feeding my cats Special Kitty for some time now. About January the older cat started to act funny but I attributed it to the addition of a new puppy in the house. We took the cat to the vet in February and he has advanced kidney failure. This cat never had a UTI as far as I can remember so it seems very strange that he is so sick so soon. We have kept him comfortable but are almost at the end, he is failing fast. Is there any way to find out if it was the cat food? I have called the number of Menu Foods and get a busy signal. This is very hard as we lost our dog last November. Any suggestions on how to get in touch with the company?

    Re: Pet Food Recall/Sick Pets

i too had a pet affected by the recall.  my cat is 6 months old and was in perfect condition at the end of january.  he was scheduled to get neutered at the end of feburary and 2 days before his appointment i took him into our vet and the cat was severely dehydrated, lethargic, and in severe kidney failure.  they told me that they were going to give him some meds and iv fluids and recheck his bun/cret levels in 2 days to see if he was getting better.  there was no evident cause for his illness.  he ate 2 pouches of special kitty food daily as well as dry food.  the vet was concerned that the cat got into a toxin at home but there is nothing in the home.  i was making myself crazy thinking i might have dropped a childrens tylenol that the cat could have ate.  after 4 days in the animal hospital my cat came home in the best condition he was going to get in.  then 10 days later i took him back for more testing, exam, and ultrasound.  between those 2 visits we have paid $1000 in vet bills and now that junior is good enough to get fixed we are going to put in at least another $250 (as he needs bloodwork, iv fluids, and another ultrasound as a result of his current conditon). it is shame that a $.27 pouch of food could cause this serious of a problem and it was expensive to fix.   i have been trying to reach menu foods as well at the number they gave and nothing.  all i want is to be compensated for the expense that i racked up to make my cat well from a problem caused by the company.  my cat will never be as good as he was before eating this food.  as a matter of fact i gave the vet the 30 pouches of the food i had left to possibly go to cornell to be tested.  i hope that this company does get forced to do something for those people whose lives have been affected.  pets are our family too.  it is not fair that any of them should have to suffer from this type of condition and the company not make it right as this appears to be there fault.

    Re: Pet Food Recall/Sick Pets

My dog doesn't eat any of the recalled food, (a well known brand made by Del Monte) but he was ill recently with vomiting and lethargy.  He went to the vet and tests showed an inflammed liver and digestive upset.  He is on anti-biotics and anti-inflammatory and is doing much better.  It could be a coincidence, but makes me wonder.

    Re: Pet Food Recall/Sick Pets

Ok I dont mean to alarm anyone, but they are saying that its just the wet cat food!! I think thats a bunch of bologna, because my cats have been eating the dry brand of Price Chopper cat food and they have ALL gotten sick!! My one cat has also been having seizures since he ate it last night!!! I called Price Chopper in Oswego,NY and they said that they are going to check on it!! Meanwhile, Im sitting here with my cat on my lap not knowing if hes gonna live or die!! I think if they recall a brand of animal food, they should check on both the wet and dry!!!

    Re: Pet Food Recall/Sick Pets

February 20th we took our very sick cat to the vet. Liverpool Animal Health Center immediately diagnosed kidney failure. Among other treatments, and IV was administered. Because the cat needed more treatment, she was transferred to the Veterinary Medical Center in Dewitt for 24 hour ‘in patient’ treatment. She remained there for 3 days. Now we have to administer an IV at home 3 times per week. When we heard of the recall, and saw the other animals on the news, we immediately knew that our cat was a victim of the recalled food. Several months ago we began feeding our cat Wegmans brand cat food in a pouch which matched the food on the recall list. I have called the 866 number dozens of times, but have not gotten through yet. Vet bills to date are approaching $2,000.00.
