Welcome To Summer (2 Weeks Early)

The heat is here and boy did it come in with a bang last night! In Syracuse there were actually 2 storms, one around 1 AM and the other one just before 4 AM. With all that lightning I'm surprised there wasn't more than 4,000 people left without power.  No reports of any other severe weather (wind damage or hail).  Those storms were along a warm front that cleared central New York this morning.  How about this for a temperature contrast: 92 in Syracuse, 75 in Albany and 59 in Worcester, MA! In fact much of New England was socked in with clouds and fog with temperatures in the 50s or 60s.

The 92 Syracuse reached Friday tied the record for the date which was set back in 1999.

Now the heat is here the next question is how long will the heat last. The feeling is we will be around 90 degrees for the next 3 days (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) then a cold front will push through Tuesday. I would characterize Tuesday as a transition day as it should still be rather humid. We have 86 in there for a high but if the front is slower in arriving Tuesday could end up around 90 again. We'll wait and see about that.

As far as more thunderstorms, there is one main triggering mechanism this weekend, a cold front. It is a very active front Friday evening with tornado watches out from Missouri all the way north into Michigan. Luckily for us, the strongest winds aloft that are helping to drive these storms will head north into Canada later tonight.  This means the front will be much weaker when it comes through central New York Saturday. In fact, on my maps for tomorrow I drew it as more of a trough of low pressure or a wind shift line. We also think we have a good handle on the timing of the front (or trough) -midday- which means by mid afternoon whatever scattered thunderstorms there are will be shifting south into Pennsylvania. The boundary will head back north Sunday and will again help cause some scattered thunderstorms.  As of Friday evening we aren't highlighted in any area of potential severe weather over the weekend but given all the moisture in the air there probably will be some gully-washers.

Keep cool this weekend!

Jim

This is MY type of weather! I love the heat and I don't mind the humidity. I'd move to Virginia if I could afford it. It's funny how people hate the cold and when it finally gets hot they complain then too. I love hearing thunderstorms at night. Bring em' on! Enjoy the heat everyone!

In your Weather Discussion, you say we have the possibility of widespread severe storms Tuesday and the NWS agrees with you as well. In their Convection Outlook, they say isolated tornadoes are possible from NY to Western NE...What do you think will be the main threat from these storms and when do you expect them to hit?

Corinne: When I said 35 degrees, that was the air temperature. The dew point was 28 degrees.  Right now the dew point is 71 degrees.

We have solar power so there is no air conditioner for us...... it's unbelieveably humid!

This weather sure is crazy! It's hard to beleive it was nice and cool in the 50's last week! I don't take too kindly to all this heat and humidity though. It's too much. I am thankful I have a/c in my house to stay cool. Without it, I could'nt stand it. Glad it's going to cool off the middle of the week. I do beileve in this global warming stuff, definitely. It's scarey. We have to make some changes to save our Mother Earth from damage from this.

One may look at these temperatures and say it is global warming, but if you look back at the records, there are many longstanding records from the 1930s Dust Bowl Era that are still standing.  I am from Central New York, but am living in Virginia for the summer and it has been around 100 here the last three days, but even still there are records that remain standing from the 1930s of around 101 and 102.  Carbon dioxide, from humans, polluting the atmosphere in the 1930s is multiple times lower than the amounts of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere today.  Having an unusually hot few days in June, or even a record-setting hot summer, as we did just recently with 2005, does not prove man-made global warming.

You are free to disagree with me, but I believe that we are currently on the upper-end of the natural cycle of the earths temperature and that already we are experiencing a gradual decline again.  There are many theories out there, and global warming as being caused by human beings is just one of them.  Another is that the earths global temperatures correlate with the sunspot cycles of the sun, hence why Mars also appears to have global temperatures that are on the increase according to NASA.  I don't think the Mars rover expeditions have released much carbon dioxide into Mars atmosphere.  The theories are interesting to examine and I believe more studying should be done than just blindly accepting the poorly-evidenced theory of man-made global warming that threatens to bankrupt us all by adding massive taxes onto already barely affordable gas and energy prices which in turn are affecting prices on food and everything else.

Let's do our part in conserving energy and taking care of the world, but lets not go overboard and allow Congress and other nations to bankrupt us by charging and taxing us because we are supposedly causing the current rise in global temperature.  What did they say in the 1930s I wonder?  How about the 1970s and 1980s when all of the scientists hyped up a supposed ice age coming?  I think that the theory of global warming as being caused by man lacks much to support it.

Stay cool up there in CNY!  I miss upstate NY and the summers there., but I just graduated from college this May and right now this is where my job is.   A big plus though is the Appalachian Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway which is only an hour away; a great place to get away to on the hot weekend days.

Brad, It's good to here from someone who has a brain and can think for themselves.  To many people out there are "spoon fed" by the media.  Stay cool down there in Virginia!

I agree, Rich.  Too many people also assume that because someone does not believe in the theory of global warming as being caused by man, that he or she is dumb.  Not following what an ever-growing crowd tells you to believe is not dumb.  Not thinking for yourself and blindly believing what you're told to believe is dumb.  I, too, do not get Fox News and I am not fond of Rush.  So, there,  you have two that can think for themselves and do not let the media tell them what to think.  I did an internship at an ABC station here in Virgina this previous semester so I know what it is like.  Don't get me wrong though; I like the news when it is objective and presents the facts and not opinions.  News Channel 9 actually does rather well with this at a local level as compared to numerous other local TV stations I have observed.  I mostly enjoy the meteorological aspect of the news broadcast, though.

Enjoy those storms today and stay safe!  I'm hoping for some big t-storms down here in VA, but it looks like most of the upper level energy needed for those will be over Central PA and NY into Western New England today.
