Teske's Tidbits (4/3/08) The One About March

I’ve heard it said that March can be the cruelest month in central New York.  There are all those signs of spring that I’ve mentioned in past blogs but there is still winter weather to deal with.  During March 2008 there were far too few tastes of spring. For the whole of the month the average temperature in Syracuse was 2 degrees below normal.  Only twice during the last two weeks of the month did our high temperature climb above ‘normal’

Sometimes, though, when I think we do something unusual meteorologically speaking in Syracuse I find myself a bit surprised.  It was cooler than normal this past March and when I looked at the individual days one thing popped out at me.  We only exceeded 50 degrees three times and two of those times were early in the month.  I figured that hitting 50 degrees only three times in the month of March must be pretty unusual so I started to dig through the climate data base.  I was wrong.  There have been 10 years in the past when March has had only one or even no days at 50 degrees or warmer. As recently as 2001 we went through the entire month of March without making it to 50 degrees. March 2008 wasn’t as unique or as ‘bad’ as you think!

And speaking of ‘bad’ here are some more notes about Caribou Maine. I think I’m becoming a bit obsessive about this city. We are now into April and as I write this (April 3rd) they still have more than 30” of snow on the ground!  They have gone more than 50 days straight with at least 30 inches of snow on the ground.  While we were struggling to reach 50 degrees in March it was a struggle for Caribou to reach 40 degrees.  They did it on only two occasions in March.

Next week there probably won’t be a post from me.  I will be traveling to where it is warmer—Atlanta and I will be taking my golf clubs with me.  I’ll see if I can bring back some mild weather with me.

Jim, during those years where we reached 50 degrees 3 or less times, what were the following summers like?  Any kind of trend that you see?

Hi Jim,
Can you please refresh my memory of last years snowstorm in April? I remember that it was on a Monday. Was it the first day back to school after Spring break? I have a picture of flowers in my yard on April 3, 2007 & I remember that it snowed on top of them. Also, my birthday is April 21. Wasn't that weekend very warm in 2007... just about 1 week after the big storm? We think this year has been full of changes. Just look at last year....all the changes that occurred in about a 2 week period in April.

Thanks so much,
Marcia

Jim, Lucky you to be getting away for a bit with the golf clubs!  Have fun.  I think it might almost be time to clean mine off from last season.  For whatever reason come the end of fall I still think I am going to get that one last round in but it doesn't happen too often.

Marcia,  here is pretty much what you remember from last year and you are right. http://goldensnowball.com/2007_04_01_archive.html  Scroll down to the posts on the 19th and the 16th and they pretty much sum it up.  I also like the Easter picture from last year that was emailed to me.  Jim and Dave's feel free to remove the link if inappropriate.

Jim, what do you guys think the odds are of us getting anymore measurable amounts of snow in the next couple of weeks.  The snow race has been close and right now Rochester is only 4 inches away from Syracuse with Buffalo right behind them.  I'm seeing quite a climb in the temperatures from the 40's, 50's and then the 60's over the next week or so.  I think it's last years mid april storm that Marcia mentioned that has me thinking we might now be done.  Any artic air on it's way or are we set in a nice warm pattern now?

In other words I'm curious if you guys see a possible upset in the makings or not?  Thanks!

I remember getting the snow the first week of April, then the third week of April was when I broke ground on the pool last year.  I remember thinking to myself, boy if I tried this a couple weeks ago I woulda been in trouble!!

Bonnie,

I'll look into the summers following 3 or less 50 degree days in March and get back to you.

GSB,

I don't know if there is any snow in the future beyond next week but there are signs of some more below normal temperatures toward the middle of the month. We keep seeing (on the GFS model) a blocking pattern trying to set up near or just east of Greenland during this time and that's not a good sign if you want warm weather down in our neck of the woods. We'll see.

Caribou Maine still has 30 inches of snow on the ground. March was 2 degrees below the average here. It sure has to be global warming causing all this cold weather, yeah right

Dave - We're snowbirds heading north next Thursday ( the 10th). I remember last year arriving home and getting really dumped on with almost two feet of snow in the upper elevations (Erieville). Wondering if you have a clue as to what's ahead in the next couple of weeks. Enjoy the south. It's in the 80's in Florida all week.

Hey Tidbit Teske.  There is no need to spend all that time looking over statistics.  We all know you cant afford to lose any more hair or you will look like Mr.Clean, and we cant have that because there is just to much light reflecting off your head when your on the air blinding your viewers.  Its quite simple, winter has been very drawn out this year.  November and December were brutal this year.  We had over 50 inches by xmas.  This is the reason why winter has felt so long.  The only reason why people are focusing on the temps in March are because the winter started so early so were trying to see early signs of Spring even though it doesnt happen around here till April.  Its all in the mind.  As far as any accumulating snow, just because there is a blocking doesnt mean were going to see any snow.  We have had a blocking for the past three weeks over Greenland and are weather has been cooler but many days of sun.  All it means for Syracuse is cooler Spring days with lots of Sunshine due to thr dryer air from Canada.  But there is the chance for the jet streams to split and we could be on the warmer split with the cooler jet stream north of us.

Jeez Paul... some of us actually like the "tidbits"! Lighten up a little bit!  It helps to know that our grass may actually be greener compared to the other side of the fence!

Uhh, Dave, before you comment again, you need to learn the difference between WEATHER and CLIMATE.  Secondly, figure out the difference between LOCAL and GLOBAL. At that point you may be able to comment in an intelligent way.

Wow, Paul sure does sound like a disgruntled ex-meteorology student who flunked out of the first semester!  It's one thing if you disagree with something that is said in here, but there's no reason to be rude to people.

I'm interested in hearing the statistics.  It can give you a good idea on what's to come.  If I'm told that in all those summers following the 3 days or less of 50 degrees in March were cool and rainy, then it's pretty safe to assume that's how this year would end up.

I think this weather team has done a terrific job of forecasting most of this winter's weather. Just my two-cents.

Paul,

At some point I'll probably go over to the Jim Cantore look;)  Very low maintenance.

Anyhow, I did point out in my comments above that the blocking didn't necessarily mean snow just cooler than normal weather for the middle of the month.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Christian...Not sure the answer to that but it looks like we will soon be back in the below normal temp. pattern.  I'm hearing most of next week is going to be cold and yes, even that dreaded four-letter word is mentioned!!!  I'm sure Dave and the crew will be having a blog about the upcoming cold.  I guess we better enjoy this week.
