The Skies Have Cleared, but Boy It's Cold!

Posted 10 AM Wednesday - Dave Longley - Skies have cleared nicely, with dry air rushing in from the north and west.  We had a few flurries this morning, but they've gone away.  While the sun will be nice, the temperature and wind won't be.  Strong low pressure across the St. Lawrence and high pressure moving our way from the lower Great Lakes will keep the wind going strong today.  The strongest winds were last night, when we gusted to 54 mph just before 8 PM.  As of 10 this morning, we're still gusting to near 30 mph.  Couple that with temperatures only in the low 30s, and wind chills are in the low 20s.  The other killer today is the dry air.  Yesterday we had dewpoint in the low 50s!!  Today they're in the teens!!  Remember, the dewpoint is the measure of how much moisture is in the air.  The higher the dewpoint the more humid it feels.  After the bone-dry arctic air of late, those 50s felt good yesterday.  Today's teens dewpoints are certainly adding some extra bite.

The weather will stay quiet for the homeopener of the Chiefs on Thursday.  We've had calls regarding the weather, and frankly, for April 3rd, the weather looks fantastic!  We'll have bright sunshine through the day, with just some high clouds coming in over us during the afternoon.  First pitch is at 2, and I figure the temperature will be in the upper 40s to near 50.  We've got to overcome a chilly start, with many locations in the low to mid 20s for morning lows tomorrow.  Be sure to bring along the sunscreen and sit in the sun!

The clouds later tomorrow will be in advance of our next weather maker, which at this point looks to be a rain storm Friday.

Dave, Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't we only had 2 days when temps reached into the 60's so far this spring?  It seems like spring is really having a hard time making in-roads into the northeast.  Even though we had a sizable snowfall in the middle of April last year, I seem to recall we had SEVERAL days of 60+ degree weather in March prior to  that storm.  At least that gives a feeling that spring isn't too far off.  But this year, with so few mild/warm days, it's so hard to "think spring."
Is there any indication that we may be in for at least several days in a row of 60+ weather?
Keep up the good work!  You guys are great!

Dave,

I know in the past you have gone down to Hilton Head during spring break. We are heading to Myrtle beach from April 12- April 19. Any idea early peak at that week?

Thanks

Sal, you're right, sort of.  We have had 4 60 degree days this year.  3 of them were in January, and yesterday.  So we've really only had 1 60 degree day this Spring.  The big story is the 50s.  There were 10, 50 degree days in 2007 and only 3 this year.  The thing that's nailed us is the blocking in the western Atlantic, which has kept the jet stream suppressed to the south, either over us or south of us.

After today's cold snap, we should see temps closer to normal over the next few days.  Sunday and perhaps Monday could be real nice, with temps approaching 60 and sun.  Actually, much of next week could be rather mild, before potentially cooler weather for the middle of April.

Hang in there Sal.  As I always say, the sun always wins out.  The longer it's above the horizon, the more heat we're getting on the earth.

Georgie,

You're right, I do head down south, and I'll be there this year.  I've been paying close attention, and it seems every day the models are showing something different.  Don't hate me, but there seems to be a good likelihood of cooler air invading much of the eastern US (including SC) that third week of April.  I'm afraid you might be down there a week too late.  We'll see, now that the third week in April is clearly coming into view of our models.

I remember the Spring outlook had forecasted cooler than average temps for March and April.  How is it looking towards May?  I have a feeling it's going to be one of those years where it feels like we go from winter straight to summer!

I just came back from a brisk walk and it is COLD out there!  It feels more like January with the wind.  The sun is nice but the wind was a killer.  I agree, Bonnie, it looks like we're going to have no transition,  just a quick change from winter to summer.  Oh well, at least we can dream about opening the pool!!

Yes Kathy, I've counted down the days to opening the pool since about January...lol.  I'm going to Florida the end of next week, and when I come back I plan on getting the yard cleaned up and starting to prepare for the opening!
