Midweek Snowstorm

Posted 10:55 AM Monday, 2/25/2008 - New data that's been coming in has been trending colder, meaning a snowier solution.  Right now, it looks like snow arrives near or a little after lunchtime Tuesday.  We'll be able to get to work and school okay, but travel later in the day could become difficult.  The storm will move from Pittsburgh at 7 PM Tuesday evening to Binghamton at 1 AM Wednesday to just east of Albany at 7 AM Wednesday.  There could still be a time when it moves into southern New York Tuesday night that we could see some sleet mix in, especially south of Syracuse.

Preliminarily, this looks to be a 6-12" snowfall for much of central New York from midday Tuesday through 7 AM Wednesday.  Additional snowfall will happen Wednesday with lake effect snows.  There is a potential for more than 12" in spots given all the energy coming together over us later Tuesday and Tuesday night.

I sure hope so but I will believe it when I see it.I hope to see it.My knees usually tell me its coming but I think it is too early yet.My family likes to soak in our 104 degree hottub on major snowy nights. So since we have had so few to do that with this season we are hoping for a significant event.I have green patches in my lawn and I'm an avid icefisherman.I need snow and ice.Not rain and sluch. Thanks Mates.Friendliness is inexpensive, but good friends are worth thier weight in Gold!

Dave Eichorn and the team at channel 9 are as good as any national weather team.  I recall Dave talking on a Y94FM morning show about a coastal storm almost a week and a half before it hit.  This was back in the early 90's, which arguably was a lifetime ago in weather forecasting technology.  As I remember, that storm was everything Dave had predicted it would be.

If the weather team at Channel 9 doesn't get it right it is because the weather pattern was extremely too complex for any forecasting methods, which implies that the national weather service probably missed the forecast, too.

Too bad I won't be in town for this storm, as there is nothing more comforting than being inside the home watching the weather unfold.  Those who live in the sunbelt US don't know what they are missing.  Ha...

8 PM update..  We shifted our snowfall accumulation map a bit from the Noon show. We took Ithaca, Cortland and Norwich out of the core of heaviest snow.  We were concerned about rain or sleet mixing in in those locations.  Here in Syracuse we think there may even be some rain too but here is why we still think 6-12" is a good bet. Tomorrow afternoon into the evening there will be a tremendous amount of lift going on above us.  This will cause the precipitation intensity to pick up.  That should cool the lower atmopshere enough to keep us mostly snow. Granted it's a close call but that's our 'gut' call.

Also, this will probably be a two (or better said 3) part storm.  We will get the initial burst of snow tomorrow afternoon then things may taper off a bit the first part of Tuesday night then some steady snow moves back in overnight. Between these 2 parts we think 6" seems reasonable on the low end by early Wednesday from Syracuse north. Part 3, of course, is lake effect and that will be the main concern later Wednesday into Wednesday night off the southeast end of Lake Ontario.  More details on this scenario in the next day or so. For now lets just focus in on parts 1 & 2.

As far as travel to Boston I would think from here east to Albany Tuesday afternoon it will be dicey as the snow picks up.  There should be some snow from Albany into the Berkshires Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning.  Not as heavy as here but still accumulating snow. After Wednesday morining most of the falling snow between here and Boston would be confined to CNY.

By the way, thanks for all the comments both pro and con.

I really have to admit something here and I usually never bash anyone's forecast but when something stairs you in the face and everyone elses acknowledges the facts and you don't, well then there's something wrong!!  Your 6:00PM broadcast was elementary at best with your in house model doing an extremely poor job displaying the intensity that people driving around CNY tomorrow evening will be experiencing.   Your in house model didn't pick up the CSI banding potential tomorrow evening continuing for several hours into the night.  You have at your disposal the GFS,EURO,UKMET,NGM,HIRESWRF,OPNAM,EXPNAM and you display an in house model that has been wrong countlesss times this year already.  You have stations all around you going much higher wrt accumulations including WKTV, Utica- most if not all Rochester stations and most of all the National Weather Service who has put out all kinds of warnings that you guys never seem to pass on to your viewers.  Tomorrow evening has the potential to be one of the worst evenings we've seen in a long time.  Temp dropping, potentially heavy snow with CSI banding signatures, and fierce N to NW winds and your in-house model shows SNIZZLE, What gives?  You actually think that 6-12" will fall in the DACKS.

I had to say this because I've been watching you guys for quite some time now and you guys are great but tonights forecast was downright HORRIBLE to say the least.  You have an obligation to inform your viewers of the potential hazards they might face, and I believe you have not done that in the least!!  We won't even go into the Lake enhancement potential on Wednesday that could drop a half a foot if not more.  One other thing before I go, Where are you getting the potential for rain in the syracuse from?  This will be an all snow event north of the Southern Tier with absolutley no rain involved.  Maybe IP but rain, come on, Please throw that model out!!  I'll have to say that your competition did a much better job this evening, WSTM!!  10-15" is a much better forecast than 6-12" for this particular event..  Good Luck cause your going to need it after this monumental bust of a forecast!!
February 25, 2008 7:58 PM

Zach said:

I must agree with OSU MET STUDENT. Almost every model has taken the storm far enough to the south to give us here in CNY no rain. Tomorrow night is going to be just down right horrible with blizzard like conditions. Your 6-12" accumulation is alright if you go with the high end but a better accumulation to put out there would be 8-16". Keeping rain in the forecast is ridiculous for Syracuse north. I am definitely not one to disagree with the pros, especially you guys, but I think this forecast is totally wrong. I think me and OSU MET STUDENT have been on the same page ever since the models brought the storm system south. We should be making the forecasts for this storm.

Update at 8 AM Tuesday - Light snow has arrived in CNY with the potential for some heavier snow possible later today.  There's been some discussion above about why we didn't go higher with snow totals.  Here's why.

Yes, there are a lot of dynamics coming together later today and tonight that would cause some heavy snow.  We do have a storm track just south of New York State, putting us in the sweet spot for getting big time snows.  Storm impact through early afternoon will be minimal.  We should have 2 to 4 inches accumulation by evening.

From about 4 or 5 this evening, through 11 or 12 tonight, is when the dynamics will come together for some heavier snow.  Surface temperatures will be in the upper 20s to near 30, so snow ratios won't be huge.  After midnight the snow will not end, but we'll be getting out of the time of heavy snow, as it shifts to our east with the main storm.  In fact, truth be told, I see enough moisture and energy lingering into Wednesday that we could still get some moderate snow at times into Wednesday.  I'm thinking 6-12" of snow by the time we get up Wednesday morning.

The wind will be picking up tomorrow causing blowing snow problems.  Temperatures will be dropping tomorrow too, and we'll see lake enhanced snow, not pure lake effect through tomorrow.  Later Wednesday afternoon, conditions will become favorable for localized areas of heavier snow off of Lake Ontario, which will continue into Thursday.  During the day Wednesday I can see another 3-6" of snow, which would put storm totals by sunset Wednesday in the 9-18" range.

It's been 24 hours that I've been closely watching this storm.  I've seen the predicted precipitation drop from more than 1.5" to just over 1" from today to 7 PM Wednesday.  That's the wettest solution.  Other information paints just over .75 inches of liquid equivalent.  Those numbers would put us in our expectancies.

If you want more detailed weather info, keep reading.  If you just want a basic breakdown, the above should do it for you.

For people more into weather and reading the maps, this system never closes off at 500mb and just barely pinches off at 700mb.  This thing is on the move.  To go big in the totals department, I personally would like to see more indication of this thing going negative tilt.  CSI was mentioned in an earlier post.  That's a type of instability that can lead to localized bands of heavy snow.  Our period for that is this evening, but the strongest 700mb frontogenesis moves into the Adirondacks, with a lighter zone of frontogenesis trailing back across central New York into tonight.  Thus heavy snow early, tapering off some, but never goes away entirely.

Thirdly, one thing that's making me a little nervous now is the entire radar representation of the storm this morning.  Not very impressive yet.  But I'm relying on the dynamics to do their trick.

Heavy rain and thunder is sweeping east through the Carolinas this morning, with a little dry slot shooting up through western PA.  That will support the minimal storm impact through mid afternoon.  All the energy coming together to produce our storm is just north and west of the low center across Ohio, Indiana and southern Michigan.  That's the thing to watch as it heads our way later today and early tonight.

Back to work now.  More updates through the morning.

Dave, Where do you think the lake effect will set up tomorrow? I live near Auburn.
February 26, 2008 7:37 AM

dlongley said:

I get the feeling Shelly's question will be pretty common with a lot of you.  I didn't really explain this too well above.  The snow tomorrow, by being lake enhanced, won't concentrate into localized bands of heavy snow like we often see with lake effect.  The atmosphere won't set itself up for that until later tomorrow.  Instead, through the day Wednesday we'll see  snow across all of central New York.

After 3 or 4 PM, more localized lake effect snow will set up.  Right now, that would tend to favor Wayne, northern Cayuga, Onondaga and Madison counties.  Maybe even southern Oswego county.  That lake effect should stay in that general area into early Thursday.

We'll have more on the lake effect later today.  We've got to deal with the heavy snow this evening first.

I'm liking the way all the slots or clearings are starting to fill in now and pretty fast at that.  That clearing around the Ohio/W. Pa border is filling in nicely now : )  I'm curious as to why Binghamton and Albany just have advisories?  Is it because the temps are expected to be warmer giving them more of a mix of precip?

That said I appreciate all the hard work you guys put into your forecasts.  I understand that you probably can't just put out there what you would like to sometimes and have to wait it out until you are more certain.  One thing I think TV 9 does great is keeping us updated throughout the storms by breaking in with weather updates as it's happening.  Keep up the good work!!!

Update at 9:55 AM - I'm sticking to the totals we're going with.  New information in supports it.  The snow will break up a bit through the afternoon as there is a dry slot moving into western PA.

We still do not think rain will mix in.  It's snow all the way down to western PA and the track may be heading a bit more south, ensuring snow for us.

There will be snow and wind causing all sorts of problems tomorrow.  At least 3 to 6 inches of new snow tomorrow with blowing snow, and wind chills right around zero.  Compared to yesterday's sun, little wind and 40 degrees, tomorrow will be a wicked slap in the face.

All of you are in my prayers that you all come home back to your loved ones.  I might sound like a 46 yr old wuss.  During the fall our men and woman came back from Iraq to the Auburn Armory, the city had a parade as their buses returned. My wife and I pride was so high for you we had tears in our eyes. Again than you.

Eagles, just some grammar advice.  Also, thank you for supporting us and fighting for our freedom.  Everyone is entitled to their opinions/forecasts/suggestions/ideas.  That is what makes democracy (what you have fought for) so special.  But why use this right to slam other people on this blog?  What about respect of others?  Again, thank you for risking your life to help others gain their freedoms and keeping us safe.

I live around Newark and the snow has pretty much quit since 6:00 news this evening.... Again, like others have said a storm that never really happend.  We had maybe 3" thats it.  I look out my window at 9:30 and its not doing much of anything. Look at a real radar maybe a inch or two coming over night.

Lets not forget , the computers models told them they were spot on for their forecast . They didn't want to say so to early. Guess what Dave you're wrong again we have as I wnt out and measured a little of 2.5 inches on the ground. And keeping with people keeping track of time it's 10:45pm Tuesday.  I live in the northen part of one of our local counties.  I glance at the radar provided by Ellen this storm is done.

Hey Sarah, lets see your forecast.  Give Dave and the channel 9 team a break.  It's called a forecast, the defintiion of which is "to estimate or calculate in advance."  Notice that it doesn't include the words "exact" or "flawless."  You are what is wrong with society.  Always looking to blame others.  I hope you feel better telling someone that they were wrong.  I'm sure it made your day.

You are right how wrong again, I live in Seneca county and we might have a couple inches and have had no more coimng down in the last few hours more than a summer time rain drizzle in snow. I too looked at the radar from a poster we will be lucky to get anymore snow that adds up. Great job WIXT.

I agree , let the excuses start now why the predictions were so far off.

Yep, over-hyped, more doom and gloom forecasting that once again didn't pan out.  The sad thing is that many organizations cancelled evening activities even though the roads were in better shape than in the AM.  The power of hype.

I don't even think we broke 4" here.

You  are right Steve, It's always overhyped. The doom and gloom forecast that never
pans out has hurt my business a lot.
I don't even look at  the  7  day  forecast.  It  changes  every  6  hours.
The  best  forecast  is  to  look  out  your  window  each  day.

Well, all I can say is, it depends on where you live.  We got slammed here in Southern Onondaga County.  We had at least 10 inches in the F-P area by 6:00 this morning and it's still coming down.  And I'm glad they canceled evening activities around here last night- the roads were very slick and were still bad this morning!  Especially Rt. 20 going east -  until you got to the Madison County line, where the roads were much better - what's with that???

We ended up with 13 inches here in Westmoreland.OSU MET Guy...If you don't think the city of Syracuse can't handle 6.5" of snow without warning than you better start getting used to CNY weather.

tweety98 said:

if you're too crabby to handle the ever shifting CNY weather, then please do us all a favor and move south! I would rather be prepared for more snow and get less than head out onto terrible roads and be surprised and late! Why are these blogs being used to rip apart the meteorologists? Honestly, if you don't like the way they predict the weather for your area, then please go to college, get your own degree and predict it for yourself. Just stop visiting this website and posting nasty comments on the blogs, it's that simple. Play nice...
