Total Lunar Eclipse This Wednesday Evening!!

Posted 11:30 AM Sunday - I've been waiting until we got closer to make this post.  I wanted to see if the weather will cooperate, and things are looking better.  This Wednesday evening, be sure to check out the moon.  It'll take on shades of red as it enters the earth's shadow at around 8:53 PM.  Totality (which we will be able to see, weather permitting) is between 10 and 10:52 PM.  I hope we can see this, because our next chance at ANY eclipse won't be until 2010!  The weather is looking more promising.  Not great, but promising.  For more details, check out this web article.  Just be careful, the times listed are in Pacific time, so just add 3 hours.

I'll keep updating as we get closer.

Yesterday, the weather guys said developing sun in the late am through the day.  Where is the sun?  I looked at your forecast and it looks like maybe an hour of sun.  What gives.  Why do you guys change the forecast all the time.  If the chances for sun were minimal to begin with than why bother even putting it into the forecast.

Mike you always seem to have the answers AFTER, rarely before.

If you are so disappointed with their forecasting, don't bother looking at the site!

And if you are as good at forecasting as you think, apply for their job.

I think the line is: "When I want your opinion I'll ask for it".  Nice try Mike.  In addition, the title of this blog is: Total Lunar Eclipse ... it is not: Bash the Meteorologists.  Why don't you take your stellar meteorological skills to another website?

Update on things.  We may have to deal with some stubborn lake effect clouds Wednesday evening.  Low pressure passing by to our south will bring some widespread light snow during the day Wednesday.  As that goes by, winds will shift into the northwest and we'll transition to lake effect snow.  My hope is that there will be enough cold dry air around that in between the lake effect clouds, we can get some breaks to see the eclipse.  Gosh I  hope so.  It's such a long wait until our next eclipse.

Jim or Dave--I watched Dave E. at 6 tonight and he said something about a widespread snow event Friday.  I looked at a few maps, and they show snow for us, but was wondering if you guys looked into it at all yet?  Anything decent or just another 2-4 small storm?

Good morning Dave.  I have a question abut the lake effect clouds/snow for wednesday afternoon/evening.  I looked at the wind direction dutring the day and evening and this is what I have found.  During the day on Wednesday, the winds will be out of the west.  I know this is 100% but from 2pm-6pm the winds will shift into the westnorthwest and thats it.  After 6pm they shift back to the west.  Now I know the wind directions I just spoke about might notw be the wind directions at the elevations that drive the lake effect.  So my question is do you only see a brief 4-5 hour period of snow for Syracuse/Northern Onondaga County on Wednesday evening only?
Thanks So Much!!

1 more thing Dave L.  If thats the case, it doesnt seem like anything could really get organized.  Maybe just a few flurries?

Probally just a few flurries.Dave always overestimates. They are already changing the forecast for wed. I think its a game they play to keep people posted to thier channel.

Hey Ryan,  You seem to have a good handle on things.  The winds remain around 250 degrees (slightly south of west) throughabout 1 or 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.  Then the winds veer into the northwest later tomorrow afternoon and stay that way into early Thursday.  This will keep any lake effect moisture down toward the Syracuse area.  Winds are pretty northwest, and it doesn't look like moisture contribution from the upper lakes will occur.  This will mean plenty of cold, dry arctic air and struggling lake effect snows that move down into the Syracuse area later Wednesday into early Thursday.  It may not be until after sunset Thursday that the plume of lake effect moisture will start to move out of CNY.

It's been a while for you hasn't it? Have you tried getting out at all? Dating might just be what the Dr. ordered to get you off of this very odd, almost comical obsession with this site and the staff.

It is weather bud, much like the stock market. Anyone can assess with a high level of accuracy after the fact.

I have learned that forecasts are not always accurate; sometimes close and sometimes way off. So what? Move on to something more important.

Does it concern you when you see that places like Syracuse and Oneida have not seen the amount of snow we normally do by this time of the year?
February 19, 2008 3:53 PM

Dave Longley said:

purplerose - Actually, I just double-checked, and we're only running about 1.5" below normal for snowfall for the season in Syracuse.  We are about 20" below last year's pace.  Psychologically it seems like a wimpy winter, but remember we started out great guns in December, and then had a quieter January and February.  Through the first 18 days of this month, we're right about where we should be.

I have been watching channel 9 faithfully for many years and again I say the entire team is so awesome! That being said, I address "phhht" Isn't there enough in this world to be bent and worried about than a word or two Dave said? How ridiculous  you are to comment about Dave! You would be better to gripe to the government for what they say. LIGHTEN UP and get real.

I heard on The Weather Channel this morning that Lake Erie has a lot of ice, so the lake effect from that direction may be decreasing.  What is the status of the ice on Lake Ontario?  As Ontario cooled off enough that the mammoth lake effect snow storms may not occur?

It's 8:56 and it appears the eclipse has started! AND we're starting to get some snow.... but you can still see the moon through the clouds. :-)

Dave Longley said:

Kim, I echo your thoughts!!!  Get out and look.  Even though we have snow, the clouds are thin enough to see the moon getting gobbled up by the earth's shadow.  Get out now.  This is the last eclipse until December 2010.

Thanks Dave - for the info and the changed text.  Looks like the eclipse was visible, based on these comments.  I'm out of the country, so I didn't get to see it.  Anyone get photos of it?

I thought it was too cloudy out last night to see the eclipse up in Central Square, but it may have just been right over my house...  and I was changing a diaper when it was on this morning... I was hoping to try to find that part of the newscast in the video section, but cannot find anything... Dave, are any pictures going to be posted anywhere on this site?

I am very loyal to Ch. 9. We can't get them where we have moved to, but I see them on an old B&W set with very bad reception. I follow them online. My wife is a loyal weather watcher. The Ch. 9 crew are like members of the family. They sometimes make human mistakes. I think that makes them better. God, by whatever name we call Him, controls the weather. Meteorologists try to interpret conditions to give us an educated forecast. Thanks for your hard work and dedication.
SailOn, in answer to you, some people have no life so they wait to pounce on everyone else.
We were "lucky" the sky was clear. The eclipse was beautiful. I may have gotten some pics to share later.
