Teske's Tidbits (2/15/08) The One About Spring Training

At the end of my blogs the last few months I’ve made a point to mention the number of days until Spring Training starts.  I’m sure a lot of people are thinking: “What gives, Jim?”  Although I do cross country and downhill ski I can still get cabin fever during the winter.  All the clouds and snow can get even me, a native Central New Yorker and snow lover, down by this point in the winter season.

However, the start of Spring Training yesterday in Arizona and Florida is a sign of meteorological change.  I’m a big baseball fan and a sucker for the thought that spring (and the start of baseball) begins a renewal process that takes us through spring and then summer. On the flip side, I cringe just a little when the football training camps start up in the summer because the days are getting shorter and I know by the end of that professional football season we will be in the heart of winter.

Now, obviously we are a long way from playing baseball here in Central New York but look at what happens in the next 7 plus weeks between now and early April when the Syracuse Chiefs open their season: our average high temperature will go from the low 30s to the low 50s.  We will also gain about 2 and a half hours of daylight in that time. That’s a lot of change in a short period of time.

Between now and then we all know there will be more winter so for all you skiers and snowmobilers don’t give up your hopes yet. I’m hoping to get out on the slopes myself, maybe even this weekend.

I'm really looking forward to the increasing daylight - it makes driving home from work in the snow a little easier.  It also makes taking the dog out in the morning a little easier!

I really hope we get one big snowstorm before the winter's over but not in April, like last year.  March would be nice.  A weekend would be nice, but not on the weekend when we have our county music festival.  No warm weather or rain right after it to melt all the snow would be nice.  Am I asking for too much here??  LOL

Well all I can say is after the disappointed winter I have had in regards to the lack of snowfall totals I'm ready to just let Spring happen sooner than later, so let the games begin.

Dave Longley didn't help much this morning broadcasting from Hancock and talking to all those lucky people flying out of town to someplace warm for the week. Now I'm not just sick of our winter I'm jealous. I'm going to Florida for Spring Break in April, with my luck that will be the week we finally get some snow to write home about.

I suppose if all we get in the next few weeks is freezing rain and/or rain...I'd just assume have spring, too. Although, I have not yet given up hope for some HUGE storm that just buries us in something we can actually snowmobile in! Remember the Blizzard of 1993?! March!
Either way, keep me on the sled for the next 6 or 7 weeks OR get me back in the garden, I'm happy!

LET IT SNOW!!!!

Hey Storm Team: The Blizzard of 1993 got me thinking. What was the winter of 92/93 like before that storm? I dont remember! Any other big March storms with minimal/weak January/February snow? Just throwin' that out there..... :-D

LET IT SNOW!!!

yea - but with the blizzard in '93 we had a normal winter, no la nina, blocking pattern over greenland, and a weak SE ridge...this winter - none of that. I don't forsee any good snowfall

I have never seen so much flip flopping with the weather forecasting lately.  Between the poor forecasting of the lake effect coming into the city of syracuse last weekend and then with this weeks storm (freezing precip) it was suppost to be over by am and it lasted all day.  Then theres last night.  Dave E tells us last night during his forecast that the sun will be out today and look at it out.  The snow flurries were to be over by this am.  Its now 200pm and it looks snowy and overcast out.  Now for the current weather.  Dave E said last night that the lake effect will start Fri night into Saturday am then the sun was going to be out where it wasnt snowing. He also said 3-6 inches.  Now as much as I believe this forecast it has already changed 2 times.  No more 3-6 inches, its going to be 4-8 inches.  And it wont be over by Sat am, it will last all day.  I looked at the models.  The lake effect wont even get going till 4am.  It looks like it stays north of route 31.  It also looks like the worst and the closest to syr will be between 7-12p.  If the air is really dry, if the sun will be out when its not snowing and the fact that the air is crossing the narrow part of the lake, it seems hard to believe we will see 4-8.  Maybe 2-3 fluffy inches but thats about it.  So much for the sun and so much for a accurate forecast.  In the 15 day forecast, its been pretty consistent on some high 40s next week.  Lets keep are fingers crossed!!!

Hey Mike ... I'll keep my fingers crossed but not for snow, for hoping to wake up someday and find the world rid of negative, nit-picky, finger pointing, know-it-all's.  I really enjoy reading these blogs and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say "If you don't have anything positive to add keep your typing to yourself."  Nobody's perfect. Relax.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I could almost sense a little spring in the air yesterday (thurs.) here in Lyons.  The sun was out and with little wind, you could feel the warmth and how fast it melted the snow on the pavement.
Like I said on an earlier post...I'm glad it;s mid February and not mid November.  But then again, I'm a lover of spring/summer.
And by the way, you guys at channel 9 do a bang up job in the weather dept.

10pm, light snow here in O-Hill.  Looks like the band is organizing a little further south than Dave. E said earlier tonight.  Wondering if they will shift the 2-8 a little further south?

First, I like Central NY. Grew up here. The four seasons, the "measure of the year," all that stuff. Used to be, Winter meant snow, a lot of it, building forts behind the house, even if one didn't live in the Tug Hill snow belt, but right in Syracuse. At least, that's a kid's memory. Did it really play out like that, every year?

Last year brought some good snow late in the season, when I was least prepared to deal with it, but this year? Snow to sleet to freezing rain/rain. Would like the stability of Nov/Dec through March means snow. When one sees other parts of the cold North US having snow on the ground, and here we sit with a smattering, I wonder what the future might bring?

The 9WSYR guys do a great job, and to even put this blog out for us to vent/question is a kudos to them. The guys don't get it wrong anymore than that the fact that weather-forcasting is an imperfect science, too many variables. But they do a good job, and it must be exciting to be in such a challenging career.

Ok, guys, what does the long-term future hold? Less snow, and more scary ice? Not asking a controversial Gobal Warming question, just a current years- out trend. As best you can call it. Thanks.

Everyone keeps wishing for a big snow storm.  Why?  The weather pattern we have been in lately will just let all of that snow melt within a week.  There is many feet of snow just north of us.  So either zip your lips or stop being so dam cheap and go put fuel into your vehicle and drive north.  This message is for all the annoying people still wishing for snow.  This has been a long winter since it started in early November and its time we look for signs of Spring!

P.S  For all the snowmobilers who keep writing on this blogg wishing for snow.  Im not quite sure why.  Do you really want to take your loved ones to an area where the chances of being killed by other snowmobilers is very great.  I read yesterday morning of IDIOTS slamming into each other.

The extended outlook is quite refreshing.  A Huge change to warmer spring like weather starting the first week of march is showing itself on the models.  Now I know Teske doesnt like long range forecasts but he would be lying if he said he doesnt look at them because he does.  What you want to find is consistency in the long range models showing the same thing.  Well most of the models are showing a nice warm up for the northeast.  The first days of march are in the 50's right now and the way the models are showing this trend I would say it should remain like this for a prolonged period of time.  Not one of these 2 day warm ups then back to cold weather.  Here comes Spring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One thing that will help in a couple weeks with all of our "moods" is the start of daylight saving time.  We'll shift that hour of daylight back into the evening.

I'm with Kippy.  It was a bit disconcerting talking to all of those people heading south.  I guess I can live vicariously through them today when I watch the Daytona 500 and the temps are in the low 80s!

I just looked at the 00Z GFS and for the Spring lovers, it's looking more and more promising if you're not a fan of the cold.  Of course that's one run, and I see the 06Z run was a little colder and snowier.  It's only Feb. 17th, and I think we can assume another month of winter weather  One thing is for sure, the sun is much stronger now (it melted away the lake effect on my driveway yesterday, despite temps in the low 20s) and we all could use more sun.  After our cooldown mid this week, we could be setting up for some much needed sun.
