Messy Weather

Posted 4 PM Tuesday, 2/5/2008 - Dave Longley - Well, politically it's Super Tuesday, and meteorologically it's shaping up that way too.  We've got our own issues, but if you're a severe weather afficianado, we have a high risk of severe storms this afternoon across the TN Valley and Deep South.  Tornado watches have been posted, and the atmosphere down there is ready to explode.

The warmth exploded northward toward us with thunder and small hail.  Things have tapered off as the warm front is moving south now as a cold front.  Cold air is gradually oozing southward back into central New York, setting the stage for some messy weather here Wednesday.

The mess will be caused by an area of low pressure now over Missouri.  That's the one that's causing the severe weather this afternoon well to our south and west.  That low will bring another widespread area of rain to our area later tonight.  The thing I've been pulling my hair out over is the depth of the cold air over us and what exactly will fall from the sky.  I started playing this up on TMN this morning, and now I see the  NWS has issued winter weather advisories for Onondaga county and points north.  South of Syracuse, it looks like the thermal setup of the atmosphere will be warm enough for rain.  Boy, will it rain.  Computer models are spitting out 1 to 2 inches of rainfall tonight and early Wednesday.  That could cause some flooding across the southern half of the state.

The thing we have to be careful about is what falls over the Syracuse area Wednesday morning.  Honestly, it's a coin flip now, and we're playing it as a snow, sleet, rain mix.  Some of that low level cold air could push a bit farther south and we could end up with freezing rain.  This one will be one to watch over the next 24 hours.

Dave, any chance we'll wind up with a major ice storm? 1-2 inches of rain falling as freezing rain would be disaster.

Dear Dave,
Is it possible that we will get anymore significant snow fall over the next month.  I have seen that the temperatures are going to fall, do you think there is any possibility of lake effect flaring up over the Finger Lakes are.  Hopefully we will get some snow so i can ride locally.  Thanks for the great forecasting!!

Just some observations from late this afternoon.....our thinking for the 5:00 PM forecast was that snow will be hard to come by in the Syracuse area Wednesday. When the intensity of the precipitation picks up at times w could go over to snow for a bit.

Best chance for snow will be northern Oswego County and points north.  Late tonight and early Wednesday it could come down hard.  We put 4-8" accumulations up for these areas (Pulaski, Lowville, Watertown etc)

Although there could be more than an inch of liquid precipitation, temperatures may stay above freezing much of the day in Syracuse. The difference between last week's icing and tomorrow is that we started last Friday in the 20s while tomorrow we'll be in the low to mid 30s.

That's the view right now.  As Dave mentioned above, this is a tough forecast. I'm sure there will be some surprises so make sure you tune into Dave at 5 AM Wednesday.

Jim

Will all of this mess be over by Thursday morning?  I have an early flight out of Hancock and dread the idea of dealing with ice.
Thanks

430am, raining very hard here in Onondaga Hill. Temps. right around 36-37 degrees.  One thing to note is the FOG!!!!!!!!!!!  Almost IMPOSSIBLE to see up in the hills around here.  If Dave Longley reads this before going on the air, you can't stress the FOG enough, never drove through such dense stuff!

Waiting for the sleet/freezing rain, but nothing here yet.  Looks like a little snow for us tonight?

Thanks Dave!

Shawn - I highly doubt Dave will adjust his forecast because of something he reads on these posts or because someone on Onondaga Hill said it was really foggy.  If you listen to there nightly forecast (which you obviously dont) they said it wil lbe foggy in areas.  Yes it will change over to snow late in the day (1-3 inches).  Clean the wax out of your ears.

Mike, when did I say to adjust the forecast?  I was just saying how foggy it was on the roads....thats all.  Yes I listen to the nightly forecast.  It was just an observation that's all....I'll keep my thoughts to myself from now on so Mike C doesn't get all upset.

Dave and Jim do an amazing job for us, and I never ever question anything, all I do is ask questions sometimes.

If you have a problem with something I say on here, I'll give you my email address, or hell, my phone number and you can discuss it with me there.  People don't come into this forum to see agruments between different "Bloggers"

Jim & Dave,
How much snow do you expect the southern Tug Hill to get-Florence, Osceola area.  We are looking for more snow to ride on.  The snowmobile trails will be in sore shape after all this rain.  I'm hoping for a lot (in feet).  Don't let me down! :-)

8:30 PM Wednesday update.....

Freezing rain continues to fall around Syracuse.  When I left the station to come home at 7:00 PM there was a bit of ice on my car but I didn't have to do any scraping.  To the north in Oswego County there have been reports of sleet, freezing rain and snow. I saw on our web site there was a bad accident on I-81, most likely because of the weather.

The reasoning behind keeping our snow totals low tonight (Trace-3") around Syracuse was that by the time the atmosphere cools enough for a change over to snow all our computer models show the steadiest precipitation shifting to our north.

I see a number of snowmobiliers asking about snow in the Tug Hill and Old Forge and I think the news for you folks is better.  I would think you are in an area where 4 to 8 inches of snow could fall by Thursday morning.

One other note about the forecast.  We ened up pushing temps up for Sunday and Monday.  It's still going to be below normal like we originally thought but teens are looking less likely.  It looks like the core of the weekend cold will actually track to our south.  The GFS late Tuesday started to indicate that but it wasn't until we saw a couple more model runs that we thought we were looking at a trends.  Still early for details but there should still be some lake effect around Syracuse, especially Monday.
