Teske's Tidbits (1/31/08) The One About Groundhog's Day

It’s a little hard to believe we are just about into February and Groundhog's Day is just around the corner. For some, Groundhog's Day signals what could be the end of winter, or at least a light at the end of the tunnel.  I took a look at snowfall numbers for Syracuse after February 2 and found, however, almost no difference between snowfall after Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early Spring versus when he predicts 6 more weeks of winter.  It’s been my experience that spring never arrives before the middle of March here in Central New York so we are guaranteed at least 6 more weeks of winter.  In fact, if you look closely at Syracuse numbers you will see there is little difference in our late season winter weather based on Phil’s prediction.  Here is a look at average snowfall after February 2nd:

47.4”                     When Phil predicts 6 more weeks of winter

49.2”                     When Phil predicts an early spring.

So while it may be a big deal in Pennsylvania (literally thousands of people show up!), a large gopher being plucked from his burrow to see if he spots his shadow does not qualify as a sign of an early spring here in Central New York.  Still if you are wondering what up with Phil check out this web site:

If you want to watch the spectacle live this Saturday that’s where you would go. Even Phil is hip to the new technology although I don’t know if he has his own blog.

Here are some loose ends for January.  As I post this (Thursday morning) we still have a few hours left in the month but it looks like our snow is done and it is the least snow in January since records were kept at the airport. The total is going to be either 10” even or 10.1”  There is a slight discrepancy between what the folks at the airport have in their records and what the National Weather Service is posting in the daily climate report. Hopefully will have that cleared up soon. Temperature-wise we are going to end up almost 7 degrees above normal. Not even the warmest January of this decade, though.  January 2002 and 2006 were both warmer.

The Lake Effect Challenge for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is now up to 21.50 dollars.  Only 14 days until pitchers and catchers report to spring training. You can almost smell the pine tar now!

Hey Jim,

Any prospects for some real snowfall in February at all?  I haven't had to touch the shovel since December.

Only 18 Days to the Daytona 500 and 15 Days until the Duels to set the field.

we may see some in the feb 17 time period ; maybe a foot in onondaga county; this winter is beginning to look like 2001-2002; the stream and the arctic circle is favoring us to have a mild march and warm april.  the groundhog will predict an early spring ; they are very loving animals.  let spring come early , theres always snow in the mountains.

Whether he sees his shadow or not, I'm still glad it's Feb 1 and not Nov. 1...we're still that much closer to the "real" spring, whatever that might be.

As far as I'm concerned spring is right around the corner.  I have a cat who sheds twice a year.  He didn't shed his summer coat until mid October, and he has been shedding his winter coat daily for the past few weeks.  He has never shed this early in the year and it has me convinced that spring is not far off.  I'll let you know if it works out that way!

My cat just sheds all the time, before this year never noticed any peak season for shedding. About 10 days ago, all of a sudden noticed big loose clumps on her that I'd never seen before, even though I'd combed her out a week or two before that. - Info for all of you cat fur watchers.

do groundhogs shed; or better yet do pet owners shed more. i always wondered why the groundhog[aka beaver; aka prarie dog; aka freind of man' never gets any love. theyre adorable and cuddly, and i bet you could approach them . some radio announcer was associating them with dangerous animals. theyre the underated mammals of the universe. how do i know; [only there shadow knows for sure]

Snow totals here in Onondaga Hill as of 9pm on the range of 2-4 inches of heavy wet snow.  More that I thought would happen, and maybe Jim too?

Radar looks like its filling up again with more precip.  I thought I was all coming to an end at 7?

Keep up the good work guys!

And yes facefurny--Groundhogs are open....fair game!  Go get um'!

9PM Update...we are transitioning from the rain and ice to snow.  As Dave Eichorn mentioned in his 5:30 PM weathercast there is a strong disturbance in the upper atmosphere moving through Central New York.  It's fast moving but the radar is filling up again and there is some yellow on the screen so there are some bursts of heavier snow.  We're going to up the accumulations tonight from tr-2" to 1-4"  Shawn, am I guessing correctly that your 2-4" also includes some of the snow from earlier today? Again this feature is moving quickly so snow should taper off during the middle of the night.

Also, watch out for the wind to pick up.  It won't be like this past Wednesday but late tonight and tomorrow morning there could be some gusts past 30 mph.  The winds die down quickly tomorrow afternoon.

Here's my bonus tidbit for tonight.  I just saw that our liquid equivalent (rain & snow melted) for today is up to 1.48"  All of January we had just 1.36"!

Hey Jim, thanks for the update.

On my way into work tonight, we probably had a good 2-4 inches of wet heavy snow just from the day, not including what we get tonight.  I was just surprised at the amount of wet snow we got, I figured it would of changed to rain.

Snowing pretty hard right now (930pm), so your forecast of 1-4 looks to be a good bet.  Thanks again!

Any word on possible lake effect on Tug Hill Tourathon trails east of Mannsville for tonight and tomorrow? Looks like wind will be out of the west. Plenty of good snow up there, but Tourathon event is tomorrow, so lots of folks hanging on your answer!

We have 5 cats (1 four legged and 4 with tracks and skis). One has really bad breath other 2 smell of 2 stoke oil and 2 no smell at all being 4 strokers--AHHH LOVE that smell or lack thereof. Was out riding earlier this week, 55, 110, 170 miles respectively. Supposed to go out on Sat, but not sure. Looks like I'll have to blow out driveway in am. Would love to see a nice snow storm for the entire area, say 10"-16" range. Any luck with that happening?

Hey Shawn, do you ever watch any of there forecasts?  OR do you just like to here yourself type.  Dave E. was quite clear that a change over from rain to snow will occur over this evening on the 530 news.  Stop bothering these guys with questions that have already been explained and just let them work.

Dear Dave,
Do you foresee any snow in February for the finger lakes and central p[arts of New York State.  Snowmobiling around here has come to a stand still and it costs about 100 dollars not including sled gas to get to the Tug Hill.  We all hope that the central new York area will get a drastic weather change and a good pounding of snow in February.
Thanks from all the snowmobilers in the Auburn area and beyond

I'm no expert, but it looks like our chances of getting any decent snowfall over the next couple weeks looks pretty slim.  NWS and Accuweather seem to concur.

Could this be the winter that really wasn't?
