Weather Discussion

A Midweek Roller Coaster

I thought I would get things going with a new thread about our mid week weather. First things first: what about Tuesday morning?   Warmth and moisture is already surging east through the Ohio Valley. As of 9:30 PM Monday the rain was as far east as Cleveland. Our concern is as this precipitation moves in late tonight it will fall as freezing rain. Current temperatures from Central New York through interior New England are below freezing and temperatures will be slow to rise overnight. Luckily the air over us is pretty dry as well so some of the precipitation will evaporate and weaken as it gets closer to us.  The evening runs of the computer models are continuing to show this weakening trend so we still feel the freezing rain is going to be light Tuesday morning.

Our focus will then turn to a strong storm pulling out of the Plains Tuesday.  It will be near Chicago Tuesday evening headed to James Bay 24 hours later. That's bad news for Central New York snow lovers.  We are going to be on the warm side of this system until Wednesday morning when a strong cold front comes through.  Up until this point we will be too warm for snow and when we do turn colder midday Wednesday most of the moisture (ie precipitation) will be to our northeast.  The chances for accumulating snow here in Syracuse don't appear to be high.

The big story Wednesday will be wind.  Once the cold front moves through Wednesday morning the wind should pick up out of the west-southwest. mid morning and continue through the afternoon. Sustained winds of 20-35 mph seem to be a good bet with wind gusts to 50 mph or higher. That would be enough to bring down some trees and power lines. There is a high wind watch in effect for all of Central New York for Wednesday. I was just looking at some of the new data, however,  and it is suggesting that the strongest winds aloft Wednesday may track just north of Lake Ontario.  We'll see if that trend continues with models tomorrow.

Where will the lake effect be on Wednesday?  Anything for Minetto?  Hope to see some.

Skwerlboy,

Lake effect on Wednesday should be north of Minetto, probably over Jefferson County.  You may get some flurries off Lake Erie during the day.  Squalls may drift south close to you Wednesday night.

Shawn,
there is certainly a better chance for snow Friday but we are more concerned Friday for an icing situation.

Also, I just saw that the National Weather Service issued freezing rain advisory for parts of western New York overnight.  They may have to be extended it east for parts of Central New York around AM commute time.

Freezing rain is cuasing problems across central New York, but the back edge of the rain will move east through our area by 9 or 10 this morning.  Temperatures will warm quickly once the rain ends.  We've already got low 40s in western NY.  The sun is getting out in Michigan, and we expect some sun here this afternoon.

Is it possible to be a bit more specific as to when and where the lake effect will set up and do it's thing Wed into Wed night? Was up snowmobiling on the Tug Sunday and Monday and there is enough snow for the most part, could use some more. As you know, there were several snowmobilers trucks towed on Saturday in Parish. From what I've read or heard, even the locals say the same thing, no one has seen Tug Hill oversaturated as they did this past weekend. Trails were toast by Sat afternoon. We lucked out and found some good ones on Sunday (not many). So more snow would be greatly welcomed.

It iced over quickly too....I started my vehicle to go to work at 7:00 and it had just started sprinkling.  By the time I left at 7:15 my sidewalk and driveway were totally iced over!

acjagz--Right now the lake effect snow will be north of the Tug Hill area, and at this point doesn't look all that impressive.  Just a few inches up there Wednesday night....if that.

It indeed has been a rather boring winter. I wonder if we will end up with snowfall below normal, instead of above normal as predicted. Warm through next week, NAO is trending towards neutral, large southeast ridge, no greenland block = no storms

Sounds good to me..I can't WAIT to reopen my pool!  On average what to summers following winters with below average snowfall show?

We ran out of water this summer and we need the snowpack--NOT rain--to insure we can replenish the tug hill aquifer.  I saw the refield reservoir empty last summer and it greatly impacted the salmon river water flow, the fishing and the amount of eggs collected at the hatchery.  Just say no to rain and yes to snow and cold weather.

I'm interested in what Friday is going to be like.  My sister is coming up from Elmira in the afternoon.  Will we be dealing with rain, freezing rain, or snow in the F/P area by Friday afternoon?  By the way, the weather for last Friday's school ski trip at Togg was PERFECT!  The kids had a blast and they all went home with smiles on their faces....and a few sore bottoms!

Do you expect a line of strong storms to develop ahead of the front like we saw earlier this month?

Hey guys  Dave mentioned above about the snow being north of the tug hill and not too impressive is that still the case looking at my rescheduled run to Fort Drum from last Wed and hoping it won't be whiteout blowing across 81 from these high winds.

Wow, getting ready to open the pool! We are getting ahead of ourselves.

Just a couple comments.  I see there was a question about storms with the cold front.  Right now the biggest difference between tomorrow morning and earlier in January is temperatures.  We were in the 60s when the strong line of storms moved through back then.  Tomorrow morning we will be in the 40s, maybe near 50. Still, whether there is thunder or not I think we will have very strong winds as the front comes through and for several hours after that. Right now that will probably be in the 8 AM -Noon time frame. I would think that will be the best time for any damage/power outages.  It looks like the wind won't start to really subside until Wednesday evening.

Looking at the data this afternoon I am concerned that there could be some heavier squalls up across Jefferson county perhaps getting close to the Oswego County line for a while Wednesday evening.  Even if the snow is not to heavy the wind will cause quite a bit of blowing snow.

For folks thinking about Friday I think we are going to end up seeing just about everything: snow, sleet, freezing rain and even plain rain.  Best chance for snow will be early and late in the day. That wintry mix would come during the middle of the day. We'll sort those details out in the coming days.

One other note, I saw there is a Storm Warning for Lake Ontario tomorrow.  The Weather Service is forecasting 15-20 foot waves!

Jon ch has surfaced again, must be picked himself up out of the snowbank.  Jon, most people in here love winter weather, doesn't mean you have to like it, but deal with it.

IWANNABESHAWN---How flattering!  Winter is about over?  .........Right

Looking forward to updates on Friday's situation........Thanks Jim!!

I just looked at the 15 day outlook and right now its showing for a few days temps in the 50's.  It looks to be above average for temps as well.  I know this isnt always accurate but vould this be showing signs of an early Spring.  I know that sounds crazy for Syracuse but if we look at all of the weird weather over much of the nation, it is def a possibility.  Look at our snow totals, temps, almost everything and nothing adds up at all.  Which to me shows signs of something out of the norm and that would be a early Spring.
