I thought I would get things going with a new thread about our mid week weather. First things first: what about Tuesday morning? Warmth and moisture is already surging east through the Ohio Valley. As of 9:30 PM Monday the rain was as far east as Cleveland. Our concern is as this precipitation moves in late tonight it will fall as freezing rain. Current temperatures from Central New York through interior New England are below freezing and temperatures will be slow to rise overnight. Luckily the air over us is pretty dry as well so some of the precipitation will evaporate and weaken as it gets closer to us. The evening runs of the computer models are continuing to show this weakening trend so we still feel the freezing rain is going to be light Tuesday morning.
Our focus will then turn to a strong storm pulling out of the Plains Tuesday. It will be near Chicago Tuesday evening headed to James Bay 24 hours later. That's bad news for Central New York snow lovers. We are going to be on the warm side of this system until Wednesday morning when a strong cold front comes through. Up until this point we will be too warm for snow and when we do turn colder midday Wednesday most of the moisture (ie precipitation) will be to our northeast. The chances for accumulating snow here in Syracuse don't appear to be high.
The big story Wednesday will be wind. Once the cold front moves through Wednesday morning the wind should pick up out of the west-southwest. mid morning and continue through the afternoon. Sustained winds of 20-35 mph seem to be a good bet with wind gusts to 50 mph or higher. That would be enough to bring down some trees and power lines. There is a high wind watch in effect for all of Central New York for Wednesday. I was just looking at some of the new data, however, and it is suggesting that the strongest winds aloft Wednesday may track just north of Lake Ontario. We'll see if that trend continues with models tomorrow.
