Posted 10:15 AM Tuesday - Dave Longley - Low pressure now moving
through the Great Lakes will track to our northwest today. Some
light snow is now moving into the Finger Lakes, and we'll see
occasional snow through the rest of today. Temperatures have
risen to near 30 in SYR at 10 AM, but will likely hold there through
the afternoon with the snow coming in. Gusty winds will make it
feel like it's in the teens as dewpoint temperatures are in the single
digits. An artifact of the arctic air that was in here this
weekend.
Accumulations still don't look all that big for us today.
Generally a couple of inches or less. A few more inches could
pile up on the Tug Hill plateau.
Winds will switch to the west and temperatures over us will start to
drop. Some briefly heavy snow squalls are possible across all of
central New York tonight....nothing too organized. That will
change by Wednesday as we should wake up to a band of heavy snow
stretching the full length of Lake Ontario. This looks to be a
northern Oswego, southern Jefferson, Lewis county event. 850mb
(5000 feet) temperatures are around -15C and colder so we're not quite
as cold as this past weekend, but certainly cold moist air will be over
the lake and we should be getting some contribution of moisture from
the upper lakes so we don't see any reason right now why 6 to 12 inches
of snow can't add up in those areas under the heavy lake snows.
The one thing that could cut into those totals would be if the snowband
wiggles around a bit and doesn't stay in one place all that long.
That's what Teske and I will be looking at in just a bit.
This band of heavy snow looks to slowly move south later tomorrow and
could get as far south as the shoreline of Lake Ontario, hitting
western Oswego county for a time later tomorrow. It could be
snowing hard, but it won't last for a long time. Winds are
forecast to become northwesterly, and this will act to drive the snow
southward into the Finger Lakes, where it will fall apart into flurries
and weaker snow squalls. Before snow lovers in the Finger Lakes
get their hopes up, this is going to be anything but impressive.
We may get a quick couple of inches of snow Wednesday night as the
remnants of the band push south through all of central New York.
The air will be cold Thursday, but the air will be drying out
fast. Not good for heavy snow.
Time to look at the new data coming in. If you don't like the
cold (me included) temperatures will moderate again over the
weekend.
The countdown is on. For me, 26 days until the Daytona 500.
For Teske, 23 days until pitchers and catchers report. And did
you catch the Masters' commercials in the AFC Championship game Sunday?
