Lake Effect to Wind Down Later Today

10:20 AM Monday, 1/21/2008 - Posted by Dave Longley

39 inches of snow are the winners thus far in the lake effect snowblast of this weekend.  Both Pulaski and Fulton got that much, but as I write this, Pulaski is right under the core of intense snowfall, so another 6 or more inches of snow are likely there this morning.

The larger radar view is showing a pretty move north about th take place in the snowband orientation sometime very late this morning or right around Noontime.  This will shove the heavy lake effect snow northward into Jefferson county, where it will slowly wind down through the afternoon.

Elsewhere, outside of the lake snows, it is downright cold.  Temperatures will struggle to reach the low 20s, with wind chill temperatures in the low single digits.  We should see a good deal of sun, with some mid-level clouds coming in later today.

The weather looks quiet as the kids head back to school Tuesday morning.  Cloudy skies are expected, with some light snow moving in tomorrow afternoon.

Below is a list of snow totals we have as of 10:30 this morning.  Please fell free to add.

Fulton  39"

Pulaski  39"

Oswego  34"

Palermo  33"

West Monroe  28"

Scriba  28"

Redfield  17"

Thanks for the info. I hate reading all the snow totals, I'm jealous. I live on Onondaga Hill and all we had was wind and cold. I actually had to drive to Oswego yesterday just so I could get a taste of winter. The lake looked awsome with the dark clouds and white caps. What is the long range forcast, any chance we may get some of that pretty white stuff here in Syracuse?

I used to live in Pulaski and am now living in Jacksonville, FL.  I love to turn on the weather channel and check in @ 9wsyr.com on occasion to see Oswego County getting dumped on!  I don't miss it a bit.

Coffeeguy...we're just starting to take a look at that.  For a time during the day Wednesday the snow could come down hard east of Lake Ontario, affecting travel on I-81.  I don't think it'll set up for a long time, so I don't think we'll be measuring in feet.  We'll have more on this either later today, or certainly tomorrow.  At this point things look to be moving around a lot, so everyone may end up sharing in the "wealth" so to speak.

Brutal cold will come in Thursday, but winds are going to be pretty northerly, so we won't have all the ingredients there for heavy snow.  That air coming in Thursday is forecast to be colder than what we're getting rid of!

dave, you are overpaid and inacurate; move to the arctic; your every day disaster forecasts would be more accurate there. senior citizens who cant afford to live anywhere else or move are sufferring when nasty weather hits . give them a break. more global warming could help. aldo , i personally can take anything the weather dishes out; but after 55 years who wants to anymore.

jon ch---I an idea for you...If you have a lot of snow, go outside, fall into a snowbank, and don't get up.......

If you DON'T have a snowbank, Lock yourself out, and wait for a snowbank to fall into......and don't get up

Stay out of here and stop being an ass......

You can't control Mother Nature, it's impossible.  These guys do the best they can for us.

Hey Dave,
Do you think the lake snows Wednesday Night-Friday will dump on Northern Onondaga county at all? You are great at your job and keep doing it. Thanks for all the updates.

Just a couple of additions to what Dave said earlier.  It still looks like squalls are most likely east of Lake Ontario Wednesday then shift south toward Syracuse late Wednesday night/Thursday morning.  As Dave said before the squalls will move around a bit more than this past weekend but I also noticed that temperatures aloft at 10,000 feet Wednesday won't be as cold.  This may also keep snow totals down compared to what Oswego County just had.

More to come tomorrow.

Raindrops on Monday?? This won't set too well with Jamie and I for snowmobiling! Hope the Wed snows carry over to Rte 12 to the East. All this recent snow in one area is a recipe for accidents this w/e on sleds (way too many people in one place).

Had to fire up my Johnny Popper this past Sat just to hear what it sounded like due to lack of use clearing snow here by  dlongley.

i love the snow. i cant get enough of it. on the second night my lady got stranded. i was forced to go down 48 at 1am. that was the worst road conditions i have ever seen.
2 feet of standing snow in the road and plows getting stuck. as for the city of Fulton, normally they wait till the storm is over before they plow the streets. maybe if they plowed thought the storms, the cleanup wouldn't be so hard on them. as for me i have a 4x4 and im respectful of the snow so its not such a problem.

Well guys I am going to take a chance and schedule my apointments for Fort Drum Wed and cross my fingers it doesn't get too bad. What do you think the winds will be like due east of the lake as that plays more of a role as to how visibility is?

dlongley said:

coffeeguy--I just checked the winds, and it looks like they'll be in the 10 to 20 mph with some higher gusts.  Blowing snow could reduce visibility for a time.  It looks like there will be a band somewhere in southern Jefferson county during the day Wednesday.  Outside of that 10 to 15 mile wide stretch, I don't think you'll have too many problems...outside the wind.

As someone who lives between Fulton and Oswego, we were buried under snow all weekend, but I want to commend Newschannel 9, especially the morning crew, who really provided excellent up to date coverage. We really rely on you guys to let us know what is going on, and you have never let us down.
Thanks again!
