Last week I listed some of the top weather stories from the
past year.
Over the last week I took
some time to dig through our climatological database to find to find some
interesting tidbits from 2007. These tidbits are great to use around the water
cooler at work. Also, you have my permission to use them at your next party.
In January 2007 we had just over 3
feet of snow for the entire month but it was only on one day, the last day of
the month that we had at least 10” of snow on the ground.
Within a week’s worth of time in
February 2007 there were 3 days with at least 10” of snow. That’s never happened before in Syracuse.
There was 141” of snow in a 9 day
period in February in Redfield. Syracuse’s
total snowfall for the winter of 2006-07 was 140”
From the start of the New York
State Fair through September there were 6 days in the 90s.
Some numbers from 2008 that already made our heads turn:
Tuesday we tied a record for the warmest January day in Syracuse
when we reached 70 degrees. In addition,
the low for the day was 59 which made the mean temperature 65 degrees. We were
42 degrees above what is ‘normal’ for January 8th. Dave Eichorn and I were digging through the
database this afternoon and as far as we can tell there has never been a day
that far above normal in Syracuse
history. That’s pretty heady stuff statistic-wise and we are only a week into
2008.
The Lake Effect Challenge is stuck on $14.25 for the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and there are now 36 days until pitchers and
catchers report
