Strong Damaging Winds Through the Afternoon

Posted by Dave Longley - 12:30 PM Wednesday - A strong area of low pressure in Canada is bringing not only cooler air, but exceptionally strong winds to all of central New York.  The highest wind gust at Syracuse's Hancock Airport has been 60 mph.  60 mph wind gusts have been common across much of the area.  We did have a gust to 75 mph in Constantia this morning, and Rochester reported a 75 mph gust when thunderstorms moved through this morning.  There was even a report of a 737 being moved on a jetway in Buffalo!

So, the million dollar question is---when does it end?  Soon I hope.  As of Noon the power outage numbers are the largest I've seen all day, and with gusty winds continuing through the afternoon, additional outages are likely.  It looks like strong winds will continue through sunset, with a gradual slowdown tonight.  By the time we head out the door Thursday morning, winds should be around 10 mph.

Stay safe out there.  We can all enjoy a quiet, mild Thursday.

My grandmother used to say if the wind comes up with the sun it will go down with the sun...Here in the village of Mexico the winds didn't hit til the kids were going out for the bus, 8:45 am.

Very windy here in Onondaga Hill.  Actually, I saw a kitten in my neighbors yard, and just about got picked up by the wind!

Jury still out on the Coastal storm?  I haven't had a chance to look at the latest models

Had a wind gust this morning at around 7 AM of 40 MPH on my somewhat sheltered weather station here in the village of Tully.  I'm sure it was significantly higher in open areas.

It does however correlate nicely with this person's weather station here in Tully

Either way, it was one of the windiest day's I can remember since moving to Upstate NY.  I witnessed at least a dozen trashcans flying around, a kiddie pool wrapped around a telephone pole, numerous "tumbleweeds", and more birds struggling to fly straight than I could count!  Anywhere online where today's high wind gusts have been posted?

Tom,

We are planning a 10th anniversary page for the Labor Day storm. Probably one for Blizzard of 1993 (15th Anniversary) too.

A couple of days ago I said the jury was out on a Sunday-Monday storm along the coast. It's a couple of days later and here is what we know.  The GFS model is still not buying into the storm along the coast.  However, the last couple of days the European model has shown a deepening low tracking into Eastern New England Monday. I will say the European model has done a better job with the coastal storms so far this winter.  With that in mind I would say our chances for a storm Sunday night into Monday are increasing.  We'll see in the next few days if the GFS model joins the party.  Don't ask about accumulations yet.  It's way too early in the game.

Jim--Thank you so much for the latest update on the possible Coastal storm.  Rather than me, and other bloggers to keep bothering you on this, well just wait for you to update us rather than us to keep asking for the updates!

Hopefully, we'll all have something to talk about!
