Ice on Oneida Lake

Posted by Dave Longley - Figured this was just as good a place as any to post this question.  We have gotten a couple of calls regarding wind speeds and direction from folks living up on Oneida Lake.  The reason?  The shifting ice.  My question to those of you out there is what is the ice coverage on Oneida Lake, and approximate thickness?

A strong cold front is forecast to come through our area tomorrow (Wednesday) morning, and this thing will pack a whole lot of wind.  The wind will be coming from the west-southwest, and be pretty steady in the 20 to 30 mph range.  This may be enough to cause any ice that's on the lake to pile up on the north, northeast and eastern shores of Oneida Lake.

The winds won't start to subside until later Wednesday night.  Please feel free to post observations on ice thickness, and whether anything is piling up.

Thanks, Dave.

hi dave,
i live out between bridgeport and lakeport on the lake. i've heard rumors of anywhere between 4 and 6 inches of ice out here. that was over the weekend. after yesterday and today, that's probably pushing it. it will be interesting to see what if anything this ice will do tomorrow. i can not see any open water from where i am and that commonly is part of how and why ice piles up. with a complete ice cap it's kind of secured within it's own borders. in the spring, when the ice leaves the shoreline, it shifts around with the change of wind direction. thus, each time the wind changes there is more open water to give the ice room to pick up speed as it aproaches the shoreline its being blown into. but, you never know!

Boy Dave -- you read my mind. We live in North Bay -- lakefront. Literally the house house is 8 feet from the shore with a 5' sea wall. As soon as I heard the forecast last evening -- thats exactly what came to mind!
The ice fisherman made their 'official' appearance on Saturday morning -- which means that there WAS at least 5 inches or so. Its very 'black' which means its very thin. Last week when it was thin..we had some mile ice piling up in a nearby  marina, doesnt appear to be much damage. The good thing is that on this end, it doesnt appear that there are too many open spots, so thats one less thing it thing it will have to gain speed.
We're nervous about tonight/tomorrow none the less. I'll be sure to keep you posted. If I get a chance to snap some pictures, where should I send them???

live just inside the lake in brewerton.
think you all will be ok on the lake. water level is down enough where ice is still attached to the shore. ammount of rain will be the key player if the ice stays attached. info attained from ice fishermen that have spent many years out on the ice in the winter.
note: kayaker pulled from water tonight in front of brewerton marina. may have been in the water for approx. 1hr. brewerton rescue was on scene with divers, and air boats.

Looks like from the latest info., if there is a coastal storm, it would be Sunday/Monday, but the snow would be further south than normal?

Updates Jim?

6:45 AM Update...severe storms now moving through Syracuse. Lots of schools delaying this morning to avoid having the kids outside as this hits. Power outages in Fulton.  Winds gusted to 75 mph in Rochester. As you look at the radar the line of storms will move through quick but don't let your guard down.  We think wind will gust to 50 mph throughout the day even once the storms move east.

The storms sort of fell apart over us this morning (North Bay)..had a few quick gusts but that was it. The lake was still iced over when I left the house at 7:15 a.m., lots of water on it though. The Barge Canal in Sylvan Beach is open once again, but some pretty slushy chunks floating in it...
I'll keep you posted!!

Posted by Dave Longley - Not too bad outside....if you don't have to go out.  Winds have been consistently gusting to 60 mph at Hancock.  We're in the time of max wind now, and will be there into this afternoon.  I don't expect winds to die down until later tonight.

Thanks for the lake ice comments.  We did get a little pileup last night near Sylvan Beach.  As mentioned, if there weren't any big holes out there, it may not get as bad as we've seen in the past.

We'll keep checking back for comments through the day.  To send pictures of waves, wind, etc., e-mail stormteam@9wsyr.com

For you snow hounds, the AO does dip negative next week, and we should see some cold air get in here.  Honestly, the jury's still out on what type of coastal low we could see Monday.  Euro gets some snow for us, the GFS runs it off the coast.  I haven't looked at much medium range stuff yet.  I'm getting to that now.

Be careful driving out there.

Re: Sylvan Beach ice -- I did see some pile up on the pier this morning...nothing major though. Certainly not what that end of the lake is used to!

HI Storm Team --
I just emailed you guys a few pix I was able to snap this evening. All are from North Bay .... the ice is 2 to 3 inches at most...which kept the damage to a minimum.

Now that the weather is getting cold again, how about some snow for us snowmobilers??!!
