This is the time of year for top
10 lists about everything. For whatever reason, people just love them. While
watching TV last week I even saw a top ten list that incorporated America’s
fascination with building implosions. I think there is no reason we shouldn’t
do the same for Central New York weather although it is
a bit shorter. Here’s what I think were the top 6 weather stories in Central
New York in 2007
6.
Early Start
to Winter of 2007-08 Winter weather
roared into Central New York in December 2007. First, a
prolonged lake effect early in the month then a series of storms during the
middle of the month dropped nearly four feet of snow in Syracuse. This in contrast to the lack of snow early
the Winter of 2006-07 (see number 4)
5. April Nor’easter. Almost
4 weeks into Spring a late season Nor’easter
dropped a heavy wet snow across Central
New York. While a bit more
than half a foot of snow fell in Syracuse,
higher elevations had a foot or more. A
week later Syracuse was in the mid
80s!
4. Late Start to Winter 2006-’07: Very little winter occurred from
December
2006 through early January 2007.
the relatively quiet weather culminated with highs of 62 on January 5th
and 6th. Winter arrived soon
after and Syracuse received over
120” of snow from early January on.
3. Sporadic Dry Weather. Less than an inch of rain fell in May but
that was
followed by more typical rains in
June and July. Another stretch of dry
weather at the end of summer pushed parts of upstate New
York into a minor drought.
2. Warm and Sunny early Fall. September 2007 was 4 degrees above
normal and it was the warmest
October on record. Leaves all over Central
New York changed color later than normal.
And the number 1 weather story…..
1.
Mega Lake
Effect Event. A week long lake
effect event over Oswego and parts
of Oneida Counties deposited more than 100” of snow. The snowfall made national
and international headlines
I also want to give you a heads up on ten year anniversary web
page we are going to post for the North Country Ice Storm (yes, It’s been that
long!) We’ll take a look back at what
caused the storm plus we have some incredible images from the storm. I was digging through our archive of stories
from the storm and we’ll post a number of them.
You’ll see a much younger Jim Teske in one. It should be posted by the end of the week. I’m not sure exactly where on the home page
it’s going to be so keep checking back with us and I’ll make sure I link you
there.
