Teske's Tidbits (1/2/08) The One About The Top 6

This is the time of year for top 10 lists about everything. For whatever reason, people just love them. While watching TV last week I even saw a top ten list that incorporated America’s fascination with building implosions. I think there is no reason we shouldn’t do the same for Central New York weather although it is a bit shorter. Here’s what I think were the top 6 weather stories in Central New York in 2007

6.      Early Start to Winter of 2007-08  Winter weather roared into Central New York in December 2007. First, a prolonged lake effect early in the month then a series of storms during the middle of the month dropped nearly four feet of snow in Syracuse.  This in contrast to the lack of snow early the Winter of 2006-07 (see number 4)

5. April Nor’easter.  Almost 4 weeks into Spring a late season Nor’easter

dropped a heavy wet snow across Central New York.  While a bit more than half a foot of snow fell in Syracuse, higher elevations had a foot or more.  A week later Syracuse was in the mid 80s!

4. Late Start to Winter 2006-’07: Very little winter occurred from December

2006 through early January 2007. the relatively quiet weather culminated with highs of 62 on January 5th and 6th.   Winter arrived soon after and Syracuse received over 120” of snow from early January on.

3. Sporadic Dry Weather. Less than an inch of rain fell in May but that was

followed by more typical rains in June and July.  Another stretch of dry weather at the end of summer pushed parts of upstate New York into a minor drought.

2. Warm and Sunny early Fall. September 2007 was 4 degrees above

normal and it was the warmest October on record.  Leaves all over Central New York changed color later than normal.

And the number 1 weather story…..

1.      Mega Lake Effect Event.  A week long lake effect event over Oswego and parts of Oneida Counties deposited more than 100” of snow. The snowfall made national and international headlines

I also want to give you a heads up on ten year anniversary web page we are going to post for the North Country Ice Storm (yes, It’s been that long!)  We’ll take a look back at what caused the storm plus we have some incredible images from the storm.  I was digging through our archive of stories from the storm and we’ll post a number of them.  You’ll see a much younger Jim Teske in one. It should be posted by the end of the week. I’m not sure exactly where on the home page it’s going to be so keep checking back with us and I’ll make sure I link you there.

Hi everyone,

The web page for the North County Ice Storm has been posted:

http://www.9wsyr.com/content/weather/ice_storm/default_oc.aspx

You'll also find the link on the left side of our home and weather pages. Lets us know what you think.

Stay tuned: I think we will do an anniversary page for the Blizzard of 1993 and the Lake Effect Storm from last year as well.

I have to travel the week of 01/14 and am wondering what I'll be leaving behind. Can you give me your best prediction for that week?

Oh come on..Jim hasn't aged a bit  ;)
I can't believe some of the damage from that ice storm.  It's almost unbelievable to see in our own community.  I lived in Hannibal during the ice storm or 2003, but I was giving birth to my daughter while the ice was coming down.  I couldn't go home after I was discharged because we had no power, but my husband drove me there so I could see it.  The devastation there looked very similar.  Trees were hanging and utility poles were downed all up the street.  It was very eerie!

I live in the western Finger Lakes and we had a decent ice storm in 1991 that didn't make the national news (I don't think) but we lost power for a few days. Nothing remotely close to the '98 one in the North Country though.

Hey Jim or Dave,

What do you think about a Nor'easter for next Monday or Tuesday? Can't wait for winter to return here in CNY.

Bob,

Here is a good web site that I use for lake temperatures:

http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/stat/statistic?region=o&template=stat

I use it because it also compares this current year with the previous 5 years.  By the way, where we are now is the coldest Lake Ontario has been sice 2003.

Thoughts on Zach's prediction for a storm or heavy snow next week?

Zach,

I think the jury is still out on storm along the East Coast in the Sunday-Tuesday time frame.  There hasn't been much consistancy in the computer models.  The operational runs of the GFS today (Monday) have kept low pressure well off shore.  The 12z Monday EURO too.  However, at least 4 of the 11 ensemble track the low closer to the coast with snow for us so I can't totally write off the possibility of a storm just yet. Hopefully the models will sort things out better in the next day or two.

Good Morning Dave, or Jim.  Hate to take the talk away from this beauitful weather we have been having, but I've heard a few rumblings on a possible Coastal Storm for the end of the weekend.  I know Jim said the jury is still out on this, but just wanted to know if any new information has come about.

Keep up the great work--Possible golf for either one of you?  I'm thinking I'll be heading to Orchard Vali in LaFayette later today.
