Black Friday Weather

Posted by Jim Teske

Lake effect snow continues across Central New York but so far no major traffic problems. In spite of temperatures in the 20s I think there is enough radiant energy from the sun getting through the cloudsto keep roads wet.  There has been a spray of snow off the southeast end of Lake Ontario down through Syracuse and into the hills to our south. Most of the snow has been light but occasionally you will get a burst of moderate snow (Syracuse's visibility was down to 1/2 mile as of 1 PM). I just can't get excited about accumulations more than an inch in spots partly because the snow looks so disorganized on the radar right now and secondly there is plenty of dry air all around us.  Many places surrounding Syracuse have seen sunshine so far today.

One would think will the drier air continuing to move in this afternoon that the lake effect would gradually diminish then come to an end. However, one thing we've learned in this office is not too let our guard down too quicklywhen it comes to lake effect.  The air aloft is still cold through tonight, winds are still out of the northwest and there are some indications that atmosphere may get briefly more favorable for lake effect this evening.  That's why we are going to keep squalls inthe forecast throughthe evening. Lets see what happens.
