The Latest on Thanksgiving Lake Effect

Posted by Jim Teske

We hope you all had a good Thanksgiving. I've had one dinner so far with one more to come this evening after the early shows. If you are out later this evening or maybe overnight starting your holiday shopping early Friday morning there will be squalls around.

As of the 5:30 PM the squalls had yet to develop, probably because the air aloft is still getting colder.  I would expect the radar to blossom more after 9 or 10 PM.

Winds in the lower atmosphere will be out of the north-northwest tonight which is not the best direction for heavy accumulation. The air aloft is as cold as last Friday night (when some 7-8" totals occurred in Madison County) but one ingredient that is missing is a connection to Georgian Bay. Input from there or even the upper Great Lakes usually makes the squalls more productive down here. With that connection missing that's why we are thinking a dusting to 3"  If I had to peg an area most likley to see 3" of snow it would be within the area from Auburn to Cortland to Syracuse and Oswego.

Check back leter this evening and I'll update this post in the comment section. Also tune over to us at 11 PM on the TV end.

10 PM  Thursday....radar looks less than impressive so far. While we weren't forecasting big totals tonight i don't want to back off on accumulations given the radar trends so far. It's hard to ignore the cold air aloft.  At 5,000 feet Buffalo was reporting -10c. Given the lake temperature is close to +10c that means the temperature difference between the lake and 5000 feet is about 20c, more than the 13c threshold we look for for lake effect.

One other factor that will limit snowfall shows up on the surface map I analyzed this evening.  Dewpoints were in the teens just north of Lake Ontario and they were headed south.

Bottom line is we are probably going to stick with our dusting to 3" snow forecast for tonight.

It's coming down pretty steady here in Skaneateles and the roads are covered.  Radar looks as if it will continue for a while.

Is Central Square ever going to get into any of this? 3 inches of snow is all we've squeezed out all year.
