Before you over indulge on turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pies, here are some Syracuse Thanksgiving numbers to digest. It looks like we will see at least some snow for Thanksgiving 2007 and that is not all that unusual for Syracuse. I looked up the numbers and it has happened 44% of the time since records have been kept in Syracuse. That’s actually not too far below the chance for snow on Christmas a month later (65%). Our odds have been even greater over the last 13 Thanksgivings (61%)
Temperatures given the time of year can be all over the place. Just within the last 5 years we had a day in the 60s (63, 2004) and one where we just reached freezing (2002). Typically the jet stream winds aloft are dropping farther south this time of year and are stronger. That leads to stronger, faster moving storm systems that move across country. You can be warm with rain one day but cold and snowy the next.
Thanksgiving 2007 is going to be a microcosm of past Thanksgivings. Low pressure will track to our south early in the day. The computer models we use have been in quiet a bit of disagreement on exactly where that will take place but now, a day away, all the ducks are lining up, so to speak. It looks like a Bradford, PA to Albany track to the low during Thursday. We should see some rain in the morning then colder weather in the afternoon as we drop into the 30s. The best estimate as to when we might see a changeover to some snow would be in the Noon – 3 pm timeframe. Luckily, most of the moisture will be to our northeast when the change over occurs so we are not expecting much in the way of snow. There is still some more data to come in this afternoon so make sure you check out our regular weather discussion later today. I think Dave Longley will blog about this as well this afternoon.
By the way, my favorite side dish for Thanksgiving…green bean casserole with the fried onions on top. Enjoy and have a great Thanksgiving!
