Lake Effect Snow in Central New York

Posted by Dave Longley - Finally, temperatures have cooled enough for lake effect snow to fall in the Syracuse area.  Actually, as of 7:30 this Friday morning, there's a pretty impressive area of snow coming in off of Lake Ontario, right through the Syracuse area.  Temperatures are still in the mid 30s, so accumulations will be held down some, but we have had reports of an inch or so of snow in Auburn, and we had a picture sent in from Virgil, down in Cortland county, that showed a ground cover of snow.

We'll be in and out of lake effect snow showers through the day.  Outside of the lake snows it'll be blustery and cold.

Be sure to check Live Doppler 9 throughout the day, but especially this afternoon as we head toward sunset, as a band of snow should start to get better organized near the Syracuse area.  There could be some slippery travel this evening.  That band of snow should do a bit better job at producing accumulating snow.

We're interested in what you're seeing across central New York.

Update at 9 AM - You'll notice in the live feed of LIve Doppler 9 that the amount of yellows has diminished over the past half hour.  Mark Chapin and I saw a small feature dropping down across the eastern half of Lake Ontario, that's helping to enhance the snow.  Behind that, the air is drying out and the sun is getting out, so as expected, snow showers should weaken during the middle of the day.

Do be aware though that things (snow-wise) could get better organized later today and into tonight.  There could be some slippery roads around if you have some evening plans.

I woke up to about a inch in Lyncourt this morning. All the grass was covered as well as the roads. Now things look like they are quieting down now. No, my mind is not ready for the snow yet but it's going to come weather I'm ready or not.

My 8:00 AM report this morning to NWS-Binghamton (Snow Spotter Station NY-MD-1) was a 24-hour total of 8.2 inches, with 7 inches still on the ground. This was for 8:00 AM Friday thru 8:00 AM Saturday, a bit more thgan mentioned in your Saturday Afternoon "Discussion". Three inches had fallen by 5 PM, with the balance overnight.
