Posted by Dave Longley - Wednesday Morning, 11/7/2007 - Just a few e-mails into the office with snow totals. Again, as suspected, the accumulating snow was over higher elevations. 2" in Redfield, 2" in Boonville, a ground cover in East Pharsalia in Chenango county and about 1/2" this morning in Tully.
Dry air has taken it's toll on the lake effect this morning, with just some very light precipitation now on LD9. Winds are northwesterly now as the main storm system has moved from the Great Lakes into eastern Quebec (remember, winds flow counterclockwise around low pressure areas) That cold air crossing the warmer lake waters will create quite a bit of cloudiness today, but the 9:30 AM visible satellite pictures are showing some breaks to sun in the Finger Lakes.
What we'll be watching for later today is a possible rejeuvenation to the lake effect precipitation. Winds will start to diminish, and become a bit more westerly. This will allow the cool air to hang out over Lake Ontario a little longer. Our computer models have been hinting at a brief period of snow showers southeast of Lake Ontario for awhile tonight. Temperatures will be a bit cooler, so many of us may see some snowflakes tonight.
As the steering winds becoming westerly and eventually southwesterly Thursday, the lake effect will shift to our north. Temperatures will also warm enough to shut down the lake effect (or what there is to it)
