Lake Machine Has Cranked Up Again

Posted by Dave Longley- 9:20 AM Tuesday

A large storm system parked over the Great Lakes this morning is circulating colder air across the Great Lakes.  The result...lake effect precipitation.  The precipitation has been a mix of rain and higher elevation wet snow across western New York, although Erie, PA and Dunkirk, NY have been reporting snow, and as of 9 AM, Rochester reported a mix of rain and snow.

Winds in the lower atmosphere will be southwesterly, meaning the lake effect precipitation off of Lake Ontario will be WAY to the north of us in the St. Lawrence Valley.  We'll get clipped with some rain showers off of Lake Erie this afternoon.  Here's a shot of the latest image from the NWS BUF radar.

Tonight, winds will start to shift to a more westerly direction, meaning a few more showers off of Lake Erie for us, and snow off of Lake Ontario.  Across the Tug Hill plateau, several inches of snow are possible.

We should all see some snowflakes for the morning commute Wednesday.

More to come through the day

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.......just think a couple of weeks ago we were all saying how hot it was.....got to love New York weather.

I like the snow, as long as it is not up to my hips, but I could do with out the cold.

STAY WARM EVERYONE AND ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY SEASON.

11:45 AM Update--Just getting ready for the Noon show.  We're getting reports of graupel around central New York now.  Our weather watcher in Boonville is reporting a light coating of snow.  We've also received reports of snow pellets in Brewerton, Tully and Otisco.

I think a little evaporative cooling must be helping to produce some of the frozen precipitation.  Temperatures will stay in the low 40s this afternoon, so no accumulation is expected through the daylight hours.

Actually isn't the warmth of the lake that contributes to larger amounts of snow?

Violinkell--Actually the warmth of the lake can be a double-edged sword.  A really warm lake means you don't have to be as cool aloft to get lake effect precipitation.  However, the warmer lake waters also modify or warm the lower atmosphere, meaning that locations near the lakeshore will run a few degrees warmer than spots inland.  A prolonged period of cooler weather will take care of that right quick.  Here's a link to an image that shows the Lake Ontario water temperatures over the past few years. Just copy it into your browser to see.

Is it true that if there is a lake effect storm and cold air sticks around afterwards that the next lake effect snows will not be as bad?
