Posted by Dave Longley-Well, we're seeing quite a change in the weather around here this week as things are trying to behave more like early November.
A cold front is forecast to move through here tonight which is the first in a series of cold pushes that will knock temperatures down this week, and bring our first real chance of snowflakes. It looks like 55 is the high for today, and the air behind tonight's cold front will drop us into the upper 40s to near 50 tomorrow.
Temperatures aloft will start to drop Tuesday and winds will align so that bands of lake effect rain will develop tomorrow east of the Great Lakes. The lower boundary layer temperatures look too warm for snow during the day Tuesday, but things will change Tuesday night.
A band of lake effect rain/snow will set up off of Lake Ontario Tuesday night, and inland from the warmer lake waters, accumulating snow is possible. With such a large temperature difference between the lake and temperatures at 5000 ft (850mb) and 10000 ft (700 mb) there could be some thunder and lightning. Accumulations of a few inches are possible, especially across higher elevations of the Tug Hill plateau.
Wednesday morning's commute could be interesting north of Syracuse (not necessarily because of snow accumulations, but mainly because of falling snow and wind in the morning) During the day Wednesday (actually Wednesday morning) winds will become more northwesterly, shifting any lake effect precipitation closer to Syracuse. Right now it looks like we lose the connection to the upper lakes, and as the air dries out, we would expect precipitation intensity to drop.
Some minor snowfall accumulation is possible Wednesday night with temperatures dropping to freezing, especially over higher elevations south and east of Syracuse.
So, what are your thoughts? Are you ready for some snow?
