Thoughts on This Week's Snow

Posted by Dave Longley-Well, we're seeing quite a change in the weather around here this week as things are trying to behave more like early November.

A cold front is forecast to move through here tonight which is the first in a series of cold pushes that will knock temperatures down this week, and bring our first real chance of snowflakes.  It looks like 55 is the high for today, and the air behind tonight's cold front will drop us into the upper 40s to near 50 tomorrow.

Temperatures aloft will start to drop Tuesday and winds will align so that bands of lake effect rain will develop tomorrow east of the Great Lakes.  The lower boundary layer temperatures look too warm for snow during the day Tuesday, but things will change Tuesday night.

A band of lake effect rain/snow will set up off of Lake Ontario Tuesday night, and inland from the warmer lake waters, accumulating snow is possible.  With such a large temperature difference between the lake and temperatures at 5000 ft (850mb) and 10000 ft (700 mb) there could be some thunder and lightning.  Accumulations of a few inches are possible, especially across higher elevations of the Tug Hill plateau.

Wednesday morning's commute could be interesting north of Syracuse (not necessarily because of snow accumulations, but mainly because of falling snow and wind in the morning)  During the day Wednesday (actually Wednesday morning) winds will become more northwesterly, shifting any lake effect precipitation closer to Syracuse.  Right now it looks like we lose the connection to the upper lakes, and as the air dries out, we would expect precipitation intensity to drop.

Some minor snowfall accumulation is possible Wednesday night with temperatures dropping to freezing, especially over higher elevations south and east of Syracuse.

So, what are your thoughts?  Are you ready for some snow?

In answer to Tom's question, definitely NOT in lower elevations.  It's possible that if all the factors come together Tuesday night, parts of the Tug Hill Plateau could see upwards of 6 inches of accumulation.

I guess we can just look at it as a preview of winter.

i dont know anyone who likes snow, including myself. its easy to love it when you dont have to physically move it; but i have a 75 foot driveway ,double, and 1 plastic shovel. unfortunately we live by the great lakes[central new york] , and its unlikely we will avoid significant snowfall for the winter. my astrological forecast doesnt ever match your forecast and im 85% correct. you might want to look as an alternative into meteorology-astrology books; there forecasts are more accurate than whatever you use. also, over the years , the more advanced computerizied  system of weather forecasting , the less accurate. it seems that 35 years ago, weather forecasts were very accurate with more older methods.  i personally watch the currents above alaska that affect the jet stream for our area. i bet you love the snow.

It's appearing that the lake will overwarm the air.

NWS BUF is awaiting 00z (7pm) model runs to decide on what to do with the Lewis, Jefferson, Oswego LES Watch. There's speculation they might lower it down to a advisory.

There is something I found out on the national weather service website. Last year Hancock airport riecived only 0.1" of snow and within just this week we might see ten times that amount. By the way, the average for november is 11.1", which is 1" less than what we saw last DECEMBER! The average for december is 28.6". One more thing. Dispite january of 2007 being warmer than normal like the two months before it, the snowfall was above average.

It’s one thing to forecast snow, anybody can do it with a calendar and a thermometer.  Let me know when you can do something about it like make it all go north and hit Canada.

I can't wait for the snow to fly! My wife and I just bought a new 4-Runner and I can't wait to see how it handles in the snow! Oh and maybe a few snow days would be nice too since we are both educators!

Everything appears to be behaving as expected.  We got the sun out this morning, and that should help to warm us into the mid and upper 40s.  We do have a well developed band of rain and snow off of Lake Erie, and they're already got a couple of inches of snow in the higher elevations south of Buffalo.  Some of that band is what is showing up on LD9 near Rochester.  Actually, the latest observation out of ROC is rain/snow mix.

Still, it looks like the boundary layer will be warm enough for just showers for us during the daylight hours today.

As we turn colder tonight, rain will change to snow east of Lake Ontario, and it still looks like the Tug Hill Plateau across Oswego, northern Oneida and Lewis counties could pick up 4 or more inches of snow.  We think there will be some thunder and lightning in the most intense snows.

It still looks like what's going on east of Lake Ontario will shift south closer to Syracuse by tomorrow morning.  Again, temperatures should stay above freezing, but some slushy accumulation is possible on roads for Wednesday morning's commute.  The best chance of seeing any accumulation of snow will be tonight and early Wednesday.

My thought on it is, winter is inevitable here in CNY...there's nothing we can do to change it, and if we don't like it we might as well move South!  I'm looking forward to the snow and hope we don't have another green Christmas!

Looks like the temperature drama is over now that the Wx Team "CHANGED" the lows/highs for the remainder of the week....As I stated earlier, watch for the weather drama queens to adjust there temps as we got closer to midweek since they were the only local wx channel forcasting lows/highs 6-8 degrees below everyone else.....Well done News Channel 9....Now lets see if this all repeats itself during the next cold blast...i would say you could bet your retirement on it!!!!

It is very humrous to see dlongley's blog up above say "Everything appears to be behaving as expected".
Thats a Big Negative DLongley.........It should say, "It looks like our original forcast was a bit inaccurate in predictiing some of the upcoming weather".

Please check your spelling and grammar before submitting your next post as it hurts my eyes to read them. In addition, it also makes your "insults" less credible.

The comments above are not insults.  They are my opinions.  If you do not want to read my opinions, then buzzoff.  If my grammer hurts your eyes, you might have a larger problem at hand.  Maybe you should spend less time reading my blogs and more time at the eye doctor.  You seem to be as dramatic as the Storm Team.  You would fit in there just nicely and I bet your forcasting would be just as accurate!

Half a grate daye Educator....

hey everybody, again daves forecast bites the dust;  i said before, the inaccuracies of the modern computerized meteorology is extremely inacdcurate.  astrological meteorology is much more accurate; and also, dave , you lok sad this morning ; no accumulation; you love snow but you dont have to shovel it . senior citizens dont share your love for cold and snow. more of them die in these horrific weather conditions than any other. hey snow lovers , move to antartica; sit outside there all day . lots of snow and cold.

How does the winter look ahead?

Tom F, the fact of the matter is, even if everyone who loved snow moved to Antarctica, it would not change the fact that CNY will get snow this year, and next year, and the year after that.  It is unfortunate that some seniors have difficulty in the colder weather.  But, you will find that with any weather condition, anywhere in the world.  Some deal with hurricanes, some deal with heat waves, some deal with wildfires.  We deal with snow.  Nothing anyone can do can change that.  As far as forcasting it goes, now we all know that all the weather forcasting in the world is NEVER 100% accurate.  Why gripe about it?  Fact of the matter is, we all know winter is coming, and we will get snow.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out!

Well, I for one, do like the snow.  I'd rather not have to remove it from my driveway, but I have skis and snowshoes and love heading into the woods with the dog for a good walk.

BTW, tom f, I have a 100 ft driveway, 13 ft wide.  Unlike you, though, I use a snowblower, which you might consider.

As for forecast accuracy, the weather people do the best they can.  The atmosphere is constantly changing, and even small effects can modify weather behavior - a little extra sun here, a few more clouds there, and what you thought would happen doesn't.  Current models take tremendous computing power to run, and they produce estimates, not certainties.  It's a lot like guessing the results of weekly football.  You may know who's the better team, but until the final gun sounds, you can't always know who's going to win.

Give the guys a break.
