Weather Discussion

Redesign for 9wsyr.com's Weather Page

We're looking to give 9wsyr.com's Weather section a major face lift in the coming weeks, but before we do... we'd like to see what you want.

We know everyone likes having Live Doppler 9 online, but many of you have already asked us for it to be more interactive. We're looking into what we can do to make the looping controls better, and provide you with more local information.

What are some other things you'd like to have? More maps available that are used on the air? Personalized pages for other cities in our area, like Auburn, Oswego, Cortland, ect. An area where you can submit your pictures or blog with our meteorologists about all sorts of topics? The sky's the limit.

Leave your comments below, and we'll be considering all of your thoughts as we begin redesigning the page.

As always, thanks for logging on to 9wsyr.com.

As someone who frequently travels for both business and personal trips, it would be great to have more regional weather information available.  How about links to the weather pages of "sister stations" (other ABC affiliates, or other Clear Channel stations) in other cities?

Perhaps you could extend the Timecast section to cover the next 24 hours.

Reduce the amount of non-weather related information that appears on the page.  I think you have the best weather site in the Syracuse area but I hate to wait for a lot of junk to load before I can see it.  Don’t add a bunch of stuff that will slow down the page.

Check the lower left-hand corner of the weather screen.  It’s blank.  I’m sure you could fill that space with more advertisements.

I also say reduce the amount of non-weather related information that appears on the page. For people like me with dialup it can take several minutes. I think your doppler radar is superior.

I think you should add a Weather Watchers Page. This page would contain what the weather is like in other parts of CNY. The "weather watchers" could update their hometown's weather including the temp, what it is like outside, and other stuff. The meterologists could also use this stuff in their forecast or help them out. I also think you should allow viewers to zoom in like on towns and streets on  Live Doppler 9.  I like the idea of having viewers blog their pictures on the weather page.

I would just like to mention how much I enjoy the Live Feed when Severe Weather is occuring. I hope you will continue it.

I recommend making a few additions. First I would like to see a section that shows the average temperature for the day, and monthly totals. Another idea is to list current temperatures from across the state.

** The doppler radar is very easy to read, and is the primary reason I use 9WSYR's website over any other. Don't change anything that will affect it's clarity.

I was hoping the complete Doppler/loop to be viewable on one page without scrolling like before...of course with the option having a larger view for those that want it.  It is kind of difficult to use the controls and see the radar simultaneously; especially is the action is in the bottom of the viewable radar.  Thanks!

I'd like to see less non-weather things as well but realize that the money from the sales of those locations helps pay for the website.  I would like to see info like sunrise/sunset times as well as the rain/precip totals on the page like you show on the TV screen.  I have the web page open all day at work watching the radar and checking the updates, but don't always have time at home to watch the weather.  It's hard to find those pieces of info on this website without doing some digging.  As previously mentioned the Doppler Radar is the best around and I have all my coworkers use it as well, even those out of Rochester news area.

First, you have the best local weather website... by far. However, I'd like to see links for severe weather statements on a county-by-county basis. It's annoying to try to scroll down through the multitude of watches, warnings, statements, and advisories to try to find the one that applies.

Especially when winter hits it would be nice to be able to see the expected totals for the differnet regions in CNY. It is nice to see what the expected totals are in a region that some of us may have to travel to within CNY.

Love the site. I ask that you select a site format and stick with it.  I agree with nc9nan.  A weattherwatcher's page would be great.  We live off the east end of Ontario and would like to see what the "official" snowfall is locally. I keep an informal compilation of precip here, but it isn't scientific.  (Again request a corner screen feed of the nc9 radar when interesting stuff is happening.)  The precip forecast as prescribed by the futurecast radar would be great as well.  This is the only site I go to for meterological info.  thanks for making it available.

I'd like to see some words about each day in the 7-day planner. I'd like to know if the showers are going to be scattered or wide speard and what time of day they'll arrive. The icons don't really tell you much. It hard to know if the icon means all day rain or one or two scattered showers. The hourly forcast helps a lot but that takes time to look at each day. Thanks for the great site, its the only one I use now that you added hourly forcast.

We are making hay on the farm and use your weather information many times a day.  It is important for us to plan several days in advance and to know which direction the weather fronts are moving.  The most useful part of the website - besides the Dopler - is the discussion section.  Moving that block to the top would save time.  You have THE BEST weather information in the area. SUPER!!!

You need to update the maps section and weather discussion more often during the day. Sometimes I notice that it's not updated at all during a 24 hour period. Also add precipitation totals for day/month/year and keep the running total listed so you don't have to hunt and search for it.  I would also like the weather disscussion section up higher in the page and put the adds down lower. Otherwise it's great !!!

While I LOVE the fantastic local content and this remains my sole locally-produced weather online source, I miss the Intellicast links you had on the "old" sites. I suspect that it was a corporate decision as they also have sponsored ads. Unfortunately, they have the best visible regional views (static and loop) and access to the entire country with content that I find more useful than the National Weather Service. As a result, I spend less time (as a whole) on your site because of this. Please return Intellicast!

Even on broadband, the amount and type of graphical information, especially advertising, can make even the static Doppler page load slowly some times of day.

Thanks for continually improving the site.

Cheers!

It would be very helpful if the successive maps on your "Doppler Loop" were all the same. You tend to jump from one scale to another, making it impossible to visualize the progression of a storm pattern.

Daily record High and Low temps, the average temp, precip, etc.
perhaps a 'on this day in history' if something major happend in the cuse in the past.
Weather Discussion should be brought towards the top.  No sense in having it at the bottom?
and perhaps an virtual adoptable pet? that would be lots of fun for the little ones.

I would like to see the 7 day forecast include the date for each day : i.e.; Monday 25, Tuesday 26, etc.

I would also like to have the marine forecast include the water temp. during the summer months. Those temps are available at some weather boys but are hard to track do9wn.

Based on the comments received so far, I think a weather "gadget" that indicates the current barometric pressure, highs/lows, dew point...maybe use an old-fashioned analog dial would be very cool. There is no subsitute for the simplicity of showing a barometric pressure change on a analog dial face.

It would be great to show NWS watch boxes, and actual warnings superimposed over the doppler radar, especially if they were linked to the actual warning text.  If this is not possible with the doppler graphic, perhaps a second live, updating map that showed current watches and warnings could be added.  The only reason at this point I go to the NWS sites is for the graphical representation of watches and warnings on a map.

I don't think I'll ever get used to the wind direction visuals on the Hourly Forecast. It is a windsock approach. Why not just use NNE, for example, to show where the wind is coming FROM.
The Ch.9 doppler display controls if you access it directly are fine. If you go to the maps link on the left of the weather page, you don't get the nice controls. Surely that can be fixed.
If possible, please do not show, for us computer users, a few magnified frames mixed in with the normal sizes. You do this very often close to newscast time or when the weather is really bad, and it is not possible to track the movement if the size changes.
I see some users want more ads. Why? We want to see the Weather data. We go to some trouble to visit Ch.9 for the absolutely best radar and best forecasts. We are grownups. We like the news too, and I always click on it either first, or after a weather check.  I doubt I'll get much sympathy on this one. (sigh) (smile).
I also like what DW suggested so will not repeat those here.

I'd love to see a blog where the Storm Team posts how they are getting the numbers and forecast they're getting, and we can comment back. I always like going more in depth with the weather than the 3 minutes you get on air.

I'd also like something like the weather channel's new doppler program for Live Doppler 9. Overlays for lightning and other doppler products would be another great plus. The NWS radar products are very choppy, and zoomed so far out that it's hard to see. And for the people with dialup who don't want to wait, we can keep around the old version.

Also, how would getting some moving timecast stuff in on the main page. It's kinda hard to know exactly when I'm gonna get hit (being about 6 miles out of the viewing area) with it being every 3 hours. Maybe a moving GIF.

The imagery should be no more than a couple minutes old, if the update rate is around 5 minutes per update.  I would like to see eventually live streaming radar permanently on a 24-hour basis like many TV stations now do, complete with lightning track and Storm Track.  Not only should the lightning be live, it should be like what CNN does; they have the flashes in real-time up to the second, and they look exactly like the flashes you see out your window!!  The radar should be in 3D like CNN and a few TV stations do, so you could see INSIDE the thunderstorm cross-section view, with the lightning flashing inside the storm.  You should do all this on-air as well as allow internet users to switch to 3D mode.  I agree on Doppler wind velocity; I point out you already can do this on the Weather Underground site.  I would like to see Streaming Radar eventually replace the updating radar pics.  I would also like to see this radar pick out hail areas like they do in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at KELO-TV.  I would like to see realtime temperature, pressure, humidity, dewpoint,
wind direction and speed, rainfall, heat index, windchill as reported at Channel 9, perhaps in a FlashPlayer format.  These would be updated every couple seconds, like some FlashPlayer
weather sites now do.  Yes, radar should be zoomed in to street level like you do on-air.  I think if Channel 9 made these changes, the site would be a lot better, and you would know for sure which blobs on radar ARE thunderstorms, and which are not.  I like the Live Special Feeds either Storm Coverage or streaming radar that you are starting to do.  Keep up with the Live Feeds in Severe Weather.  Good Job!!

Here's an updated outlook as to what the new doppler 9 flash view should look like.

Once again, scroll wheel will be needed to use the zoom (or add that), and click and drag to move it around (that's what I think the instructions should be). Also, it would be nice to have it zoom to where the mouse is.

END EXAMPLE =

ALSO when you mouse over the list on the LEFT side.... All it does is to turn red....
HOW about giving that more info and making it turn red BUT at least one size bigger than what it is ALONG with a >>>>>>> GO TO LINKS....

EXAMPLE =
Ricks Recipies >>> Monday 6-15
                    >>>Tuesday 6-16
                    >>>Wednesday 6-17
                    >>>Thursday 6-18

THAT way it saves time in searching all the next pace of Ricks Recipies
AND do that to all the links if possible....

ON THE TOP ROW OF LINK WORDS

NEWS [hover on the name of NEWS and you get a drop down added links
Local Regional  State  National  International  Weather Sports etc.....

USING MORE DROP DOWN MENUES does help

But also whne you hoover over the name it gets one size bigger and turns NOT RED [BUTROTATING SLOW RAINBOW COLOWS] = Someone no matter what their eye problem is can read that one no matter what

AND ANOTHER ABILITY.....
PAGE BACKGROUND CHANGING = May make any links stand out a little better

PLUS MAGNIFY [much like google does with maps.... A set of boxes that when ticked will magnify the page up to and down to a certain point = PAGE READING THEN I MUCH BETTER = AGEING BABY BOOMERS EYES

A few suggestions:
Dave has preached Dew Point to us for years, yet the webpage shows % humidity – add the dew point.

Provide current stats/measurements (Temp, Dew Point) for the suburbs.

Like the time case for rain, have a time cast for temperature and dew point.

For the forecast, show a % probability. I would hope/expect that tomorrow prediction would be near 100% while a prediction for a day say 5 days from now may be far less. However this would better help us in planning our activities through the week since if the % probability is low, we can have alternative plans. Too often the prediction on Monday is Saturday will great, then Thursday or sometimes as late as Friday the forecast is changed to rain.

For the winter, use the time cast approach to show snow fall depth that is expected.

As a boater, forecasts will state a chance of a shower or thunderstorms. But often it doesn’t happen or is in another region of CNY. It would be very helpful if you again provided some specific details of where that may happen and the % probability.

Don't be like eBay and clutter up the page so much that even us on Roadrunner have trouble loading the page.  You should keep in mind also that some of us are not on the larger newer monitors, and I hate having to scroll to the side to see the Doppler radar.  Banner ads are annoying.  I only shop online at Walmart.com and Toys R Us or sometimes eBay, so the ads are lost on me as I'm sure they are on others, although I know they pay for advertising.  Dewpoint would be nice.  Weather discussion needs to be moved up and up, it is too far down to scroll/page down to see it.  The errors I see in the news stories on Channel 9's website are far worse than any errors I've seen in the weather discussion section, par for the course.  (I do this for a living, they jump out at me LOL)  Predictability about the rain on the bar graph look for the week would be nice, agree with other comments about how the forecast is such and such on Monday with chance of rain on Friday, for example, and the icons do not indicate predicability percentage to be able to "plan" activities.

I like that it is updated often.

I don't like all the pop up ads. Way too many. This causes the webpage to load slowly, and when the internet gets bogged down, then not at all. Seems as though the ads come first, then the weather/news items.
I am using a hi-speed connection.
a few years ago it was fine, even with dial up.

I would like to see the ability to zoom in on areas at will, for closer look at where the storms are exactly.
The best I have found is "The Weather Channel" site. You can zoom in, and change the view of the weather map. It is not updated as often as your site, and frequently drops out when the storms are right over us in central NY.
Thanks,
Dale.

Make the frames smaller so they can be seen in one page. The emphasis on timecast is good, but the ability to use them is less than good.

I like your weather layout a lot as is. The short term forecast, the seven day forecast, and the narrative Weather Discussion are great.

Changes I'd like to see:
-The Discussion section could often use some spell-checking.
-I'd like the radar loop to show all images from the same range. Sometimes there will be one or two zoomed-in frames mixed in with the wider range view which makes it difficult to see.
-Addition of some historical data. Yesterday's high and low, last month's averages compared to normal, etc.

Thanks for a great site.

Several really good suggestions have already been made. As a weatherwatcher, I, too, would like to be able to upload current temps, photos & other local weather statistics. Since our only option is dial-up, the current large doppler and loops take forever to download. I'd like to see a medium-sized map, as well less clutter so the page downloads quicker. Doppler updates should be only 5 minutes apart, especially during summer storms. The Weather Discussion should be checked for repeated words and spell check is a MUST! Everyone is so personable and intelligent, I'd like to see that consistently reflected. I'm keeping your weather page as my home page no matter what changes you make. Thanks for focusing more on the Southern Tier/Norwich/Cortland area than any other Syracuse channel. You have LOT a viewers down here! I agree with all those who've said your site is the best weather site around. And the other stations' radar maps just look primitive compared to yours.
I too would like to see wind direction  on the stationary maps - it's nice to see where storm cells are, but better to know where they're going. I think the links on the left are distracting and the ads could be smaller (ideally gone, of course, but not practical).
It would be nice if the doppler loop page could be updated more frequently. Didn't it used to be every 5 minutes? When a storm's coming, I don't care where it was 45 minutes ago. And not to be too picky, but is there a way to make the doppler loop less jerky as it progresses? As soon as my eyes focus on my area, the page zooms in or out suddenly. It's kinda of annoying.
Having said all that, it's STILL the BEST SITE AROUND!

Move the weather discussion up and, quite frankly, make it less chatty and more on point as to what the weather is actually going to do.  Ok, it might rain, but where??  Talking about "models" might make you sound impressive to all the other weathermen, but mean nothing to someone who wants to know weather or not they really need to carry their umbrella today.  You also do not have any weather statistics on your site.  While I like your site best, I use a competing site for its stats, especially during the winter when I want to know just how much it has snowed.  It would also be nice if we could once again access the 7 day forecast from the home page.  I really, really, really miss that feature as I use it more than the radar.

I didn't read all of the comments, so this may be a duplicate:  Don't assume the dimensions of the user's screen:  Make the content shift with the window it is in.  On a wide screen (or large 20") monitor, the ads could be shifted left/right so there's more room for the body.  It would make the page much easier to use.

BTW, I agree with other posters that the radar loop and its controls should fit on the user's screen - but the size shouldn't be based on the least common denominator.  The size should be based on what the user has available.

It's clear that there are a wide range of opinions as to layout.  No single layout is going to come close to meeting the requests!  So how about an option to let us customize?  Set it up so we can (optionally) register on the weather page, with a username and password.

Then, let us customize the layout (probaby by choosing from among a set of canned templates).  If we're on a dialup modem, maybe a text-only page with links to images, so we get a fast initial look, and then click (or not) to get more info.  Those who want the forecast first on the page, probably could get that.  Et cetera.

Registration should be optional, so those who don't want to register will just get the "standard" page, whatever that turns out to be.

--------------------------------------

Since the doppler radar does a pretty good job of estimating precipitation, is there a way to leverage that to get maps that show estimated accumulated rainfall that's narrowed down to a small area?  This summer a lot of the rain we've had has been in the form of T-storms.  Some people have gotten a lot, some (like me) have just had occasional sprinkles.  I'd like to know how much rainfall I have gotten, specifically, so I could better estimate how much to water.

I'd like to see a map for each month, and a "current-month-to-date" map.

---------------------------------

I'd like a graphic showing sunrises and sunsets for the entire year (and you could sneak the moon into the chart as well).  I'll try a description of this in words, and if that doesn't work, I can draw a picture.

Imagine an image that's 365 pixels high by perhaps 200 pixels wide.  Each row in this image corresponds to a day of the year.  January 1 at the top, December 31st at the bottom.  Time of day runs left-to-right across, 5 PM or so on the left, 9 PM or so on the right.

Across each row is a line.  The line starts at a spot corresponding to sunrise, and ends at a point corresponding to sunset.

The effect would be a chart with two curving lines, shwoing sunrise and sunset for each day.  An entire year in a simple chart.  Put the current day of the year in a distinct color, so it's easy to pick out.

You have the best weather page I have encountered anywhere.  The best part for me is to get the Doppler Loop going.  Why?  So I can see the direction from which the next weather change will most likely come from, what it will be, when it may arrive, etc.  (Having learned about weather forecasting from you, I like to get 'deeper' data!)
So, it would be even better if you could add connections to other loops that cover more area.  You already have some connections, but they do not have loops.

While the site has so much good information, I think on it's weather home page it has to much. For some it takes slightly longer to load because everythig loads on the start. Another thing is is takes a minute for most to find what they ar elooking for because there are charts and maps everywhere.

I like how you have tabs on some of the charts, and I think a layout more like that would be easier for people to navigate to what they want to see, rather than get everything thrown at them all at once.

Also, during the winter, more of a local ability to see what's going on in our little micro climate zones would be great.  Hopefully a good tool for local superintendents to use when they figure out whether to put the buses on the road!

I use the page quite a bit and think it's very good.  I would like to have the ability to look at the timecast for the next day using weather maps.  Sometimes you show this for, say projected snowfall - especially when the lake effect bands shift around.  I'd like to see this available routinely for things like temperature and precipitation outlooks.

The Live Doppler images are not always on the same scale, so when you run an animation, successive images may zoom in or out, making the animation difficult to follow.  I like the idea of being able to zoom in manually, but I think consistency is more important.

Keep the discussion, please.  You have the best local weather site.  Thanks!

This is the only weather website I go to. I moved out of state recently but I am moving back into NY. I went to this website everyday to keep up to date on the news and weather for NY.

I would like to be able to zoom into cities and streets on the radar. I wrote a comment to News Channel 9 before this came up and asked before. It's good to see people want to see the same things I want.

I also like some kind of pop-up alert would be nice if we have a severe thunderstorm or some type of threatening weather. Weatherbus has an alert and a a alert sound when a warning is issued. It would be nice to be able to download something sort of like that, or have some type of heads up. I am on the computer most of the time, and don't check out the TV very much. A lot of times, I don't know a storm is coming until it's finally here or I happen to check the website out and see the radar.

The radar is the best around NY. Keep the clarity of it the same, or make it even better. I trust only this radar, and nothing else.

Would also like to see the storm tracker online too. You can see when the storm will be approaching your town/city so you can prepare.

Also, the high temps of the day, low temps of the day would be cool. Along with having some other information like, what city/town had the highest temperature today, who had the lowest. Who got most rainfaill, snowfall, etc.

Maybe a form and a place to display our images of the weather that we have.

Consider adding sunrise/sunset times, daily  and average temps/precip.  Perhaps if there were fewer adds on the page, there would be room.  The radar is terrific except in loop mode where it jumps from an extended view to closer range.  Can that be changed?  Is it possible to zoom in for more local view in times of bad weather? The live stream used last winter was very helpful.

I agree with taking the non-weather related material off the page or set it lower if you can.  Also, the top stories of the day shouldn't (in my opinion) be above the weather discussion.  We're on the weather page because we like the information you provide us there.  Can the Time Cast Planner, Maps, & Video tabs and Short Term Forecast be on top, next to each other when the page opens?  I'd like to see a larger Live Doppler 9 map just below that with tabs for specific maps if possilbe for some of the local towns around Syracuse.  I was wondering if the Storm Team video tab (and possibly a Weather Discussion tab) could be added to the Short Term Forecast, and the 7-Day Forecast below that.
But I have to say that I love your weather site.  It's THE FIRST place I go when I want to know what's going on.  I know I can always count on the information you put on there.  Also, please keep the Storm Team Academy tab somewhere.  That's really informative.

The first thing I thought of saying was echoed in a few other comments I read.  I like using the radar loop to see the speed and direction of oncoming storms.  It gets really frustrating when the image flashes from normal to zoom view in the frame loops.  Even though it's a wider view than I want, many times I end up going to the NOAA web page so I can see what's going on rather than subject myself to an epileptic fit...

Having a date on the Short Term Forecast would be good.  Sometimes web browsers use what's in my cache, and when the forecast includes "This morning, this afternoon, this evening, and overnight" there's no way to know if I'm looking at a stale forecast.  The Timecast Planner includes a date, so I know that part of the wb page is up to date or not, but the Timecast and Short Term Forecast are not necessarily dependent on each other.

I love your Doppler radar and the weather discussions. I wish the discussions were updated more often like it use to be when I could call on the phone for my weather report. More detail and information especially about what's coming up is better than less.

The short term forecast is also very helpful. Please continue to update it during the day and again more detail is always good for me.

Stats would be interesting - total sunshine, rain, snow for day week, month and year and comparisions to previous years. Sunrise and sunset for the day, things like that.

I don't know how detailed you can make the Doppler radar map or if you can give us more localized weather but please don't take out the major roads that you have on it now. Actually more roads and towns might be helpful for people to know just where they are on the radar map when storms are coming through. I live just south of Rt. 20 and east of Rt. 81 so I can often tell within 15, 20 minutes when a storm is going to hit me.

I love your site and check it at least once a day, usually more than that. It's kind of addictive!  Thanks for the great job you do and letting us have a say in your changes.

Might give you ideas of a el-quickie store trip in the middle of a quiet section of a rain stom [when there seems to be a hole in the clouds and no rain for 5 minutes to 20 minutes or so]

PS: one nice idea this can give kittle kids is the ability to see what street Santa Clause is about to deliver his goods at soon.....  LOL!!!!
