The Real Deal

Calls from Car Warranty Companies

We've all pulled an advertisement or two out of our mailbox from an extended car warranty company but must be too many people are tossing them away because now these companies have moved to hounded us on the phone.

They're pressuring you big time for your business but if you're on the Do not call list, they're breaking the law!
If you're not interested in one of their warranties, ask to be taken off their calling list.  If they persist, keep track of how often they call you, from what number and any other information you can collect about them and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov)

If you can't get through to a live person, trying to press the right buttons, is probably more frustration then it's worth.

So, how do these companies get your contact information?  It could come from a variety of sources.. DMV records, lease or purchase information, other companies that you do business with.  Bottom line, they have a product to sell, so if they know you're not interested it's not in their best interest to keep calling. Make it clear from the first phone call, you're not buying the warranty.

Yes I have gotten these calls.  5 days in a row this past week.  They get more persistent when you push the button to be taken off their call list.  The last time they called I waited for it to be done with the automated part, spoke with a real person and when I asked for their phone number they refused to tell me. When I asked for the name of the company they refused.  Then got abusive with me when I told them I was on the "do not call" list.  Then he hung up.

I've received a t least a dozen mailings, and probably a phone call or two. The only way to handle them is to be agressive right back.  State that you are on the "Do Not Call" list, that you have recorded their phone number (if you have caller ID) and are forwarding it to the State Attorney General's office...which you should probably do anyway.

As discourteous as it may seem, use your answering machine or voice mail to shield yourself from the calls directly, and if the caller ID does not show a number, just don't answer it.  Friends will understand.

Soluris is quite right.  These guys do NOT want to be stopped, even if you do not buy their product and they know just how far they can go.  Asking politely to get your name off the list is no good either.
