The Real Deal

Airline Ticket Name Changes

Tis' the season for holiday travel and if you purchased your plane ticket on-line... you better hope you weren't distracted.

In the past few weeks I've heard from some folks who used one of the discount web-sites to get a better price on their flight (Expedia, Cheap Tickets, Orbitz, ect) and have been left with nothing but headaches.  Basically, they made a mistake.  While distracted, they inadvertently used the wrong last name or typed in a nickname instead of what's on their ID.  Simple mistakes but they are ending up to be very costly!

One man told me he spent hours on the phone with Orbitz to try and correct the last name on a ticket he purchased for his son, only to be passed on to US Air, who told him to call Orbitz back..who directed him back to US Air...you get the point.  He fully admitted he made a mistake and was willing to pay a fee for it but everyone he talked with said he had to cancel the ticket and buy a completely new one.

Cheap Tickets and Orbitz's web-sites claim "Name changes are not allowed" as do United Airlines and U.S. Air.
But is this really a "Change" or just a correction, I mean it's not like you're giving the ticket to someone else.

What are your thoughts on it?  Have you ever been in a similar situation?  Did the airline or site come through for you or were you stuck buying a new ticket?

I was a "victim" of EXPEDIA's unethical business practice. It wasn't a mistake from my part. It was EXPEDIA's mistake and instead of fix their error they attempted to scam me. Read my case and hundreds more at http://www.expedianews.com

A couple of years ago I went into Travelocity and purchased two ticket to go visit my father for his 60th birthday. I went into the web site, put in my information, was given different airline prices and picked which one I wanted. I at that time gave them my credit card number and a ok to charge my card which at the time I thought was going to be 600 dollars and some change and waited for my confirmation email so that I may print my boarding passes. After  three weeks went by I emailed them because it was getting closer to my flight date and still did not have boarding passes I was email back that it was due to the  tickets were not issued as of  that time and to keep checking. I then called my credit card company to see if the charge went through and it did the same day I booked the flights however my credit card was charged 2100 dollars. I contacted travelocity by phone at that time and was told that because my tickets were not issued that same day as I booked them (which per my credit card company they were) that the price had gone up and I was charged the going rates of the tickets for the day they were processed and not only that but when I got the email (as I was on the phone with them) so that I could print my boarding passes my name was on both boarding passes. I complained about the price increase and luckly saved all my information when I booked the flight which clearly stated I was only giving them permission to charge my account the 600 dollars so I was told  that they would credit my account ( I believed them at the time). I was happy with that then I was told that they would not be able to change the name on the second boarding pass without  refunding the ticket and then charging me with a new one which I would be charged to cancel the ticket and then charged almost a thousand dollars for a new ticket, I needed the tickets so at that time had them do it. It took several weeks back and forth on the phone and when I finally had enough and told them I was done and that I was going to let my lawyer handle it, I was told to hang on and then given to a  supervisor and after explaining the problem to her (which I clearly did not have to because she was reading it on her computer and kept saying "yes I see that")  I was told  my credit  for the first problem and the difference from having to purchase a new ticket because of the mistake they had made was being processed at that time. I did get it but not until 3 months later........what a headache.....I now only go through the airlines it not worth it to me to save 10 -20 percent for what I went through. I am sure that there are many people that use travelocity and other sites that never have a problem, I was just not one of them.

I use the travel sites to identify the airline that has the best prices to my destination.  Then I go to the airline’s site to check their online prices and book my ticket.  Frequently I find an even lower price and I don’t pay the travel site their $5 to $10 booking fee.  If there is a problem, I have never had one, I only have the airline to deal with.

How do these links to advertisements, Cheap Tickets, get into these blogs?  I thought all responses were reviewed before they were posted.  There are more than enough places we get ads jammed in our faces, it should not be allowed here.

I agree with Bill.  The airline prices are often times cheaper than going to the travel sites.
