S.U. Orange

Did Harris Hit That Last Basket "By Accident?"

SU won a close one Tuesday night against St. Joesph's.  Freshman guard Jonny Flynn hit a 3-pointer fwith 5.3 seconds left to break a 68-all tie.

However, it was what happened with around one second left that has everyone's attention in the newsroom.

Paul Harris misses his first free throw, keeping it a 2 point game, meaning a miracle-bucket across the court would win the game for St. Joseph's.

Jim Boeheim then instructs Harris to miss the second shot so the other team would not be able to get the ball back.

However, Harris made the second bucket, and gave St. Joseph's one last shot to tie the game up. They tossed the ball across court, and attempted a three-pointer with less than a second left, but missed the shot.

Harris, in the lockeroom interview, said he tried to miss the basket, but it just went in. ( Full Postgame Comments)

Immediately after the game, Boeheim, while being congratulated by St. Joesph's coach, could be seen going after Harris to give him a piece of his mind. Boeheim told NewsChannel 9 Wednesday what he said to Paul Harris was meant just for him.

In the end, all that matters, is Syracuse beat Saint Joseph's 72-69.

I think SU should sent coach Roinson packing after the last game. I am sick of his excuses and personally I am sick of him. He has done nothing for Su football at all.

Boeheim should have waited until he was in the locker room to have said anything to any of his players. At the end of the game as Boeheim was walking over towards St. Joseph's coach, even on the TV one could see him saying something to one of his players, and one could tell just by the look on Boeheim's face that he was not happy. Poor PR by Boeheim. So is Boeheim being replaced at the end of this season? With this type of behavior, he should be, and the A.D. and Robinson should be right in line behind him.

Poor PR by Boeheim?  Who cares?  He obviously doesn't.  Winning is all that matters to Jim and his tough attitude is what makes him such a great coach.  And he has a great point, how do you swish the shot when you are trying to miss...

Jimmy has proven himself time and time again. It is not our job to discuss his coaching ways. This man is a god in basketball not just Syracuse. We should be happy, after all thanks to Boeheim we can have winning seasons year after year. I love this Coach Robinson sucks so bad and makes bad decisions week after week that we have to find flaw with every coach? What is next "Hey that dodgeball coach is not wearing an orange tie" ......LEAVE JIMMY ALONE!!!!

Any time a player is told to miss a shot and makes it he is dumb as a box of rocks.  The coach should express his disappointment to the player in any manner that will make it clear to anyone that stupid.

Dioptase, you are a loser! Who cares about this act of PR for Jimmy. He is a great
coach. If you were watching the GAME, and I suspect you were not, you would have
seen what a great coach can and did do. He instructed his team to do what is
right to win and that is exactly how they won. Yes, one of the team members
didn't do exactly what he was told, and that is what coach was making him aware of, that's his job. So enough of your BS Dioptase!

Personally, I think that the press needs to put away its microscope and let people be people.  Paul harris was told to miss the last free throw and he didn't which could have cost us the game.  Jim Boeheim got angry which was a very natural reaction in the heat of "battle".  Forget it.  Let's get on with the important things in life.

As the president of the coaches group that has set coaching standards for the entire league, he was entirely out of line to express his "anger" (they won the game didn't they???) because a player made a shot!!!!!!  If he is that hot-headed and needs to "correct" his players in that manner, perhaps he should coach the football team and tell them to not make touchdowns!!!!!  Just because he is a "hall of fame coach", doesn't give him the right to use such language on his players - get a grip, this is only a game....and win or lose, he still gets paid!!!!!!

This episode made a very interesting observation. A curious spectacle indeed. I normally don't care about basketball, but here I am irresistably drawn to this story. Therefore i conclude that the outlandish coach has increased the entertainment value of SU basketball, however I don't want him to have a stroke.

Good coaching?  Of course.  Bad timing?  Probably.  Boeheim should have waited until he was done shaking hands with St. Joe's coaches and team.  I bet Julie won't let him do that again....

Until you walk in his shoes you shouldn't judge. Jimmy is the greatest entertainment we have in Syracuse. He is passionate about what he does and you can bet that all those players respect him for who he is.We have a great team. By the way he is not the first coach to say a bad word on national tv. Carrie move on to President Bush!!!

boeheim is an icon ,period. what he's done for the surrounding area, no other man has come close. charity work, coaches for cancer, basketball camps for young children etc... lets not hang the man for a slight indiscretion; i'd be more concerned with some of the language used  in the crowd, with young children attending. jim is a great man on and off the court; i salute you sir for giving this area a pulse in our spare time. nobody can jump all over him ,considering everything he's accomplished.

I think Boeheim is an idiot.  He doesn't have the right to swear at any of the players. I realize he may get angry during the games but he need to show a little more professionalism especially when he is on national television.  I would love to see one of the players give it right back to him if he does it again.  Julie, tell your husband to grow up and treat those player with respect.

Once again, the fifth estate trying to create controversy where there isn't. Granted the language used was questionable, but we're talking about an industry here (yes it is) where coaches' jobs depend on the ability of paid players (scholarships, perks) to perform at the optimum level to bring prestige, dollars and honor to the revered institution. Certainly the football program doesn't.

Boeheim's outrageous display on national tv was disgraceful.  He was, moreover, disrespectful and ungracious towards St. Joe's coach.  Each season he seems to single out one player as a scapegoat who bears the burden of his wrath.  A person in his position should have better control and provide a good role model for his players.  Boeheim's attitude in post-game Q&A is always sneering and obnoxious.

Winning is NOT all that matters.  Boeheim represents SU and is doing one lousy job of it.  Does he think he's indispensable?  Get rid of him along with Robinson.

It was not the right time to say it, but it is over the dam now. As for what Mr. Boeheim's rights are, that is not for Boop Boob Be Doop to decide. For the rest of you nasty name callers who are degrading a great coach behind the cloak of your computer, I say,"Shame on you!" Jim is emotionally charged and passionate about the game. Of course, none of you have ever lost your temper for a moment, unlike normal people who have moments of slippage. If the players don't want the heat from the boss, then they better listen better to the instructions.  You can be sure Harris will pay attention next time and be a better player for it.  Meanwhile let us worry about more important things like the game Friday. Go Orange.  Oh! One more thing. Quit picking on the football team. Coach Robinson certainly was not left a program on the rise. I am not defending him as I wish for more progress also, but the old cliche' , "Rome was not built in a day" should apply. Next year, I may not be as kind. Let us not forget that Mr. Gross started all this and did it in a very nasty way. Enough said.

For those of you who think Boeheim should lose his job for his minor outburst, you obviously don't follow college hoops--or any sport for that matter.  This is competition people, and with coaching comes discipline.  If Harris did not follow his coach's instruction, he deserved it.

If what Boeheim did deserved getting fired, then Bobby Knight would have stopped coaching years ago.

Jim Boeheim is Syracuse University basketball!  He has given SU fans literally hundreds of outstanding moments over the years, as well as back to the community.  He has made this basketball program prestigious and proud.  He is a great teacher of both the game and life for all his players.  For those of you who are so narrow minded and want to crucify one of the best assets in the history of Syracuse University, shame on you.  Keep your comments to yourselves and go away.

Jim Boeheim has proven himself as a successful coach.  He did that before the A.D. Darryl Gross came along, and before Greg Robinson came along. I think there was too much hype when Coach P was fired, and Robinson was hired.  He (Robinson)was hyped up by the A.D.  Why was Coach P fired? For not winning?
