Jason Elam hit a 42-yard field goal just before time ran out to lift the Denver Broncos to a 15-14 victory over the Buffalo Bills in their opener Sunday.
Elam, who had missed two field goals earlier, almost didn't have a chance to make up for his misses. The Broncos were out of timeouts when Jay Cutler hit Javon Walker for an 11-yard catch with 14 seconds left.
Rather than spiking the ball, the Broncos' field-goal unit rushed out on the field and got the snap off just in time, spoiling what had been an opening day victory for the Bills.
The Bills got a solid performance from their dominant special teams unit, which produced the game-opening touchdown. But the offense appeared to be ineffective at times.
Buffalo managed just 184 yards of offense and 13 first downs.
