Rep. Jim Walsh to Announce Retirement

We've been following some developing news from Washington D.C., involving Syracuse-area Congressman Jim Walsh.

The 10-term Congressman will announce he is retiring; a press conference is scheduled in Syracuse for 2:30 Thursday afternoon.

Walsh faced a tough battle against Democrat Dan Maffei in 2006, beating him 51-49%. Last year, Walsh announced he was in favor of a withdraw of American forces from Iraq, following a tour of the area. He had previously supported President Bush's view on the war.

Actually, John, this is a good thing for the area and the country for several reasons.  Another fiscally irresponsible Republican is gone; a long-time Washington insider is gone and it give the Dems a chance to gain another seat!  good day for America! God bless the USA!

Perhaps now unlike the last election the candidates can actually put forth ideas and debate ideas rather than bury us in negative attack ads.  The one telling moment of the last campaign was when asked about the attack ads being run Mr. Maffai with a knowing, benign smile claimed he had no control over what other people put out there and yet neither would he disavow the practice or the ads themselves.  Of course most will expect that Mr. Maffai will be one of the candidates and if so, I for one will have a hard time supporting him because of his past attitudes.

How convenient for Mr. Walsh to be bowing out next time around. What do you think he is going to do with all of his campaign contributions? Buy a house in Florida?

Debbie: The campaign contributions will be returned to the donors or they will be given to the local party or something along those lines. Whether you agree with him or not Walsh has never been unethical and to imply that he would be now is wrong. Republicans and Democrats should be able to agree that Walsh did a lot of great things for CNY and I think he deserves our thanks for being a Congressman of integrity.

The best thing he did was not run again. No more free goverment trips across the world for no reason. He has about as much to say in Washington as I do. His campaign money will go to other Republicans running for office. Maybe he should spend a night working at the Oxford Inn shelter now that he has so much time on his hands. He can find out about what real America is rather tan tell his war stories in Otisco.

Tom - You are an ignoramous.  Jim Walsh was on the House Appropriation Comittee and obtained federal funds for Onondaga Lake cleanup and sponsored many Child Health Programs, all without fanfare.  He will be missed.
