I'll wait until I hear all the facts.  The New York Times also reported that John McCain may have had "too close" a relationship with a lobbyist.  That has turned out to be as believable as the guy who wanted to sell me the Brooklyn Bridge.

This is not a capitol crime, and certainly not one that's this noteworthy. Prostitution has always and will always be available, supply and demand. I'm  sad for the governor and his family, and am astonished at his bad personal judgement call. But he should not have to resign. He is still a good governor.

The point is the man was a crusader for "truth and justice" and convicted criminals for their crimes, including prostitution...and then for him to go out and "commit" a crime is the reason for the uproar, it really does not matter what crime he committed--he committed a crime, He made others serve their time, he needs to do the same.

His administration has been a major disappointment to me.  He got voted in to change things and it turns out he is just more of the same.  Seriously, what did he think - I'm such a big shot the laws don't apply to me?

"Oh, it's just his private sex life". Give me a break. I've heard from one source(meaning, it may or may not be true) that he HAD A PROSTITUTE DELIVERED FROM NYC, crossing state lines along the way. Which makes it more than a capital crime, it would make it a Federal crime. Maybe he figured if he used a NY resident, he'd get the money back in taxes. Being a former Attorney General, you'd think he'd have an inkling that he was commiting a Federal crime.

The one thing that disturbs me the most is the fact that he "busted" two prostitute  rings and those people are either currently in jail and/or had to pay undoubtely stiff fines. Mr. Spitzer then campaigned "on" these so called immoral, bad people, and repeatedly said that one of his goals was to clean up Albany and New York. What a hippocrit!! A true politician; "Do as I say, not what I do!!"  

The thugs (Bruno and company) have been runing Albany for 30 years, Ny state went from being the empire state to being the $#%^hole of the country. Taxed out every industry and people to some other place, played golf with wine, women and song with taxpayer money, the list goes on, our young leave and for the elderly it's like living in Siberia.
  Along come's Mr.Spitzer not only saying he will change things but actually tries to. I told my wife when Mr.Spitzer treid closening down some of the good ol boys favorite projects, that they would A. assinate him or, B, Scandalize him, but they would diffently get him out of office. He was a Clear and Present danger to all the good ol boys runing our state goverment for the last 30 years. I guess they have succeeded, and all you morons can go on complaining like you have done throughout the past.

People Make Mistakes. It's how you deal with those mistakes. Spitzer new better, as Attorney General, He prosocuted these cases. Now he is partaking in the behavior. He is no-longer entitled to be our Govenor. As far as jail time, I think he has undoubtedly learned his lesson.

My husband worked for one of the companies he plowed through on one of his holy crusades.  I watched truely good people lose their retirements as stocks dropped and watched people with families get the pink slip.  All so he could get some free publicity.  It's nice to see what goes around comes around. The *** deserves what he gets!  Wouldn't it be nice if they could get something on Bruno and Silvermen.  Those two are real upstanding citizans too.

Does an honorable politician really exists? I don't think so. It is a dream we have, but it will never be reality.

It's clear that he needs to resign.  What he did was illegal and unethical.  However, when it comes to politicians, be they Republican or Democrat, nothing surprises me anymore.  IMHO they are all crooked liars that abuse the power they are given.  However, for the folks on this blog that blame him for the states problems, remember that he has been governor for what, 16 months?  Who was governor before that?  Oh yeah, a REPUBLICAN.  The problems we face in this state didn't occur in the past year and a half.  They have been building for years, under a republican governor and a capital that has been, I believe, controlled by Silver and his republican cronies.  I would love to vote for someone who is just honest and gives a crap about the middle class.  Sadly, I don't believe any politician is honest.  It ends up being the politician with the best PR machine, supported by voters that seem to have amnesia when it comes time to go to the polls.

I believe that Gov. Spitzer can do the job that we elected him to do.  Every person who makes a mistake should be  given the chance to redeem him self.     What goes on in his family is between them.     He will have an uphill battle to overcome this.  Perhaps if given the chance he might become as good a govenor as he was an attorney general.   What he did  is wrong, and he hurt a lot of people.  He betrayed those who trusted him, but I believe in a God of second chances, and repentence is the first step. All I can say is Bravo to Gov. Spitzer. Bravo to him for being a man and owning up to his mistakes and realizing that he made them.

Yes, Gov. Spitzer holds a position where he is a public figure. His actions are a direct reflection on his ability to run this state. However, like the rest of us, he is only human and because of his political background must become a robot and forget that he is just human like everybody else and I don't think that is fair. We voted him into office not because he had a squeaky clean private life but because we felt him to be qualified for the position. We voted for him because we saw something in him that may help this state.

Who really cares if the man does what every man has done since the dawn of time? It is very hypocritical of us to judge someone for being what God has made us all to be. Human.

Should I think he should resign? HELL NO and if he does, he's a coward. Anyone who admits defeat is a coward. He should stand tall and accept what he has done as one of many life lessons learned and continue to run this state to the best of his ability.  Did Clinton give up when the odds were against him? No.  He fought back.

Does hiring a prostitute make you a bad government official? No. It just makes you a human being who made a poor decision. Does having sex determine what kind of leader you are or can be? On balance, loss of Governor Spitzer and his replacement by David Patterson - a person with no executive experience - would be a severe loss for NYS.  Spitzer should not resign due to a single personal misstep.  I doubt he will be charged with anything greater than a minor offense, similar to a traffic citation, or at least I hope not.  He did not commit some corrupt act as a state official,only a personal failing which other officials have been guilty of doing while still remaining in office.  Spitzer needs this chance to still be a great governor, and let voters decide if he should stay or go in 2010.

I have to agree with Tom Dumm, why should he resign and give us New York State people a govenor that has absoultely no clue.  This media attention is getting so way out of hand.  Let the voters decide.   Give him a chance to make things right with his family and then let him get back to doing what he was elected to do.  What he did was morally and ethically wrong as a public official.  I agree with those who said that, but I have to say that judge as you would want to be judged.  As I stated before, there is so much media attention to this topic of our govenor using a prostitute and less on the men and woman that were killed yesterday in Iraq.  Come on people lets stick with what matters.  Say a prayer for the military men and women we lost yesterday and leave the issue of the govenor to the media.  That is what they do best, beat a story into the ground.

I do agree that we do owe respect and prays for the military men and women however, when our Gov. can not show minimal Moral, Values, as a law obeying person especially when they are a Leader then I do believe that it is time that we demand them to be held to the same standards we are held to he has broke several NYS and several other state laws and Federal Laws…I am so sick of the fact that we hold certain people to different standards. Well well, Mr Spitzer caught doing something ILLEGAL as well as IMMORAL?  The egotistical crime fighting governor?  I never liked this guy,didn't think he could cut it as governor.  I had a bad feeling about him from the start, now I know why.  He MUST resign, that kind of behavior needs to not be tolerated.  Bill Clinton should have resigned years ago too.  You can say that it is a private matter and not the business of the public. WRONG! It is our business and we have a right to know.  This isn't the first problem Spitzer has had in office.  Drivers license for aliens, spying on Joe Bruno, taking police out of upstate schools because NYC schools have violence problems,among other things, now prostitution.  Day One, it all changes, it sure did, but for the worst.  Time to say goodbye, Eliot ! Though i am disgusted by what he did, I do not think this disqualifies him as a politician.  Don't they all do this- some more economically than others?   No, I was ready to fire him during the Joe Bruno spying controversy.  That behavior scares me much more- if he can do this to Joe Bruno, what could he do to others with less power and influence?

I'm just sad that it takes a "client number nine" event to get people to move on their distrust of him- there was plenty there before.

    If Gov. Spitzer resigns for this "Possible Indiscretion" it would be a shame for NYS.  The "Hypocritical bombardment" that this situation is receiving from Spitzer's constituents and "obvious" opponents is ridiculous.  Until all evidance is actually proven to be fact, that Spitzer is actually involved in what he is being accused of, none of us can be sure it is true.  Spitzer's apology yesterday was mearly for the "apperance of wrongdoing" that is so often, in public life, all the public seems to need to condem an individual.  "HE WHO LIVES IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULD NOT THROW STONES!"
    Who is to say that Spitzer's, "possible", participation, in an FBI investigation, IS NOT being masterfully turned against him to destroy his political career?????

The arrogance of this man!!  He should resign immediately.  I really don't think the FBI is investigating him for "political" reasons.  The man is a liar and should remove himself from the office to preserve the integrity of it.  It's his wife and kids I feel sorry for. If an average citizen was faced with the same allegations, they would already have been arrested awaiting a bail hearing. He is accused of having violated NYS Penal Law 230.04, Federal Laws regarding interstate prostitution, and it is a no brainer, that a fraud investigation will most likely reveal that he used our taxpayer money to pay for it all. He needs to resign, certainly, but what is more i9mportant, is he needs to be PROSECUTED !!!  

I see a lot of people screaming for his resignation  Come on guys   Does this mean that every man (or woman) in the corporate world should resign when they do the same thing? Neither the media nor the republican party created the court documents and the phone transcripts.  Based on those documents and, even more condemning, Mr. Spitzer's own statement to the public yesterday, I see little room for doubt here.  Maybe extramarital affairs should not be a public issue, but committing a crime IS a public issue.  A governor, particulary one who was formerly attorney general, cannot knowingly commit a crime, a sleazy crime at that, and remain in office.  Client 9 must resign.

tom f - this is not about throwing stones.  I don't care what he does in private, as long as it is legal.  If he'd simply had an affair with a 23 or 24 year old, that would be a mostly private matter, and he would have to deal with the personal issues.  This goes well beyond that.

To those who think this was just a personal matter, keep in mind that the four individuals who were actually arrested are charged with Federal crimes - read the actual affadavit from the FBI.  The issue revolves around interstate transportation for prostitution, and for money laundering.  As long as prostitution is illegal in most states, it is illegal to send people across state lines for that purpose.  Mr. Spitzer has NOT been arrested for any crime, yet.  he probably won't be charged on the Federal level, and at present, only the District of Columbia is in a position to do so, since the ... arrangement ... took place there.

What is sad is that our all too human Governor was held in high esteem for his relentless prosecution of people with great influence, and his personal behavior is hypocritical.  While the decision to resign is his, we should all keep in mind that his ability to lead in New York is severly damaged for some time in the future.  Bill Clinton's actions so derailed the public and Congress over his impeachment that nothing of any importance occurred during that period.  Given the rancor that exists between the Governor and the Senate Majority Leader and the distance that the Assembly Speaker will keep from him, what can he accomplish?  The only real power he will have for the next year will be the "Veto" pen.

The silly thing in all this is that he was caught mostly by accident, and because he didn't even learn from his techniques as a prosecutor ... he left a trail of evidence: in his financial records, email, etc.  Apparently, his personal transactions aroused suspicion, and the investigators traced him to the ...service...

There are a lot of hard working people in this state worried if they will have jobs tomorrow that depend on these so called Elected Officials to keep jobs in this Taxed to Death Hell  Hole ..aka.. New York State.   I for one don't want someone who runs his piehole and  drops his pants whooing hookers with his so called.... This is not a personal issue.  This sleaze transported hookers across state lines.  This is a crime.  Its nice to see most people at least can recognize it as such, and demand he resign.

It sounds to me like this is an isolated, one-time incident. If that's the case, then I don't see why Spitzer should have to resign. Of course, if more past improprieties on his part should surface, then he would need to step aside.

I feel this is a lot of action over little.  If this had happened to an average person no one would have cared.  Because of the enemy's the Governor has this is front page news.  Many other elected officials have done the same without this attention.  Let the man apoligize to his family and others directly involved and let them personally take what action they want in their personal life.  Let the running of this state by Governor Spitzer get back to normal.  His personal life has not affected his official life in the past and still hasn't.  Everybody should grow up.

I am so appalled at all the people who think that Spitzer just made a "mistake" and we should just let him "go" on being governor.  Dialing a wrong number is a mistake!  Intentionally calling for a high priced whore ( who is almost the same age as his teenage daughters) , meeting and having sex with her is a "CRIME".  His job as Governor and former AG is to enforce these same laws that he broke equally and without prejudice.  Unfortunately in our society today, we have two forms of justice.  One for the average citizen and one for the wealthy, powerful, and privileged.  He locks people up for doing the same thing that he has done.  And this is not "rumor" or "inuendo" as the liberal media states, but a legal accusation from the FBI.  He should be "removed" from office immediately without discussion.  He's not sorry! He's not thinking of what is best for his family or NY State citizens.  He's getting high priced top notch lawyers now to try to save his ass!
