Running out of Salt for Area Roads

Most towns across Onondaga County are changing to a sand/salt mixture, due to the growing shortage of road salt.

Highway superintendents are warning folks to drive slower, because the roads will not be completely free of snow and ice.

If the winter continues, the shortage could cause there to be no salt left for the roads.

All of the town Highway Departments in Oswego County use a sand salt mix all winter. The roads are fine to drive on, you just have to be a little more cautious is all.  The Oswego County DPW is the only Department that uses pure salt in OSW. CO.

They shouldn't be out putting down salt on wet or dry roads. I know onondaga county does this.

would an expert please tell me where all the salt went; is the shortage due to climatic catastrophies where salt is produced. most of the roads in dewitt are always clean ; modern science should have an answer to reproduce the same effect as salt and cheaper cost

There is no overall shortage of salt for road deicing. A certain company that supplies most of the road deicing salt to our area is low on this product. All the deicing salt anyone in NY could want is available from American Rock Salt Company in Livingston County in western NY.   www.americanrocksalt.com is the internet address for this company.

I have to agree that they shouldn't be salting dry roads (and I, too, have seen it in Onondaga County).

Plus they should use a sand/salt mixture ALL winter, which, as mentioned above, is done in Oswego County.

So people will need to slow down a little.  Isn't that a good thing?

Personally, I'd be ecstatic if they cleared the roads (not the highways or major routes, but side streets and country roads) like they do up in Old Forge - leave 3-6 inches (or more) of packed snow and ice and drop plain sand, so snowmobiles could ride on the side of the roadways without destroying the carbides. :)

In northern NY and Vermont where the temperature stays colder for longer periods there is usually a layer of packed snow and ice on the roads (not just the backroads, cities like Burlington too).  It really isn't a big deal, we all ought to know how to drive in the winter by now.  Buy a decent tire and take it easy.

That's a funny article actually.  Since Central New York has the nations three biggest salt mines in the Finger Lakes regions in the US! One of the companies estimates that it will be able to produce 3 million tons of salt per year for the next 80 years and approximately 50% of the state's annual salt requirement.  Where's the shortage?

They salt roads that are dry to prevent the ice from bonding to the road. it makes it easier to plow.  try it on your own driveway or sidewalk.
F-ville uses brine.  are they doing o.k.? that's supposed to be cheaper and better anyway

I understand salt does not work if the temperature gets too cold. Some towns are using a mixture of brewers mash form a brewery mixed with some other material. Has anyone heard of this?

The highway Depts. should be considering the latest technology which is a solution which lasts longer and is cheaper in most cases.  A few Mid Western states use salt and mixture by product such as Corn waste.
