US Airways to Charge Fee for 2nd Checked Bag

US Airways says it will start charging fliers $25 to check in a second bag, beginning in May. The company is hoping the effort will help them increase revenue and deal with rising costs.

The announcement follows a similar policy change disclosed early this month by United Airlines.

Under the new program, fliers will get one checked bag free plus their carry-on bags. Those in the company's frequent flier programs who reach preferred status won't have to pay the fee, nor will those flying first class.

What's your take? Do you expect other airlines to follow suit? Leave your comments....

So, there is going to be a charge for an extra bag.  Not a bad idea however, What makes the First Class Flyer any better than the Coach Flyer?

I think the airlines are desperate, and will do anything to increase their income, even if it means alienating the very people who provide that income.  If their service and general attitude improves with the added income ,I might not mind as much, but I doubt it.

If they would allow hot women to keep wearing skimpy clothing then I guess the extra $25 would be worth it.

If hyou pay more you get to check in another bag.  How thoughtful of them. What a bunch of garbage.  What's next??? Quarters to get into the bathroom and a dollar to get out?  Nickle for an ice cube? I kind of like the idea of Hooters in the planes.  Beats watching Roger's sister.

No!  There is not compensation allowed with these people.  You will call Customer Service and get someone in India who has no clue where Syracuse even is.  They will then connect you to their manager who will connect you to their manager and so on and so fourth.

As for you Uncle Buck.  Try renting a Ryder Van for you and your Polka Band.  It is cheaper and you won't have to pay to go to the bathroom.

All this does is add to tesion that we go through when we fly.  Show up 3 hours early and hope the securtiy people are gentle with the cavity search.  Then hope your luggage gets to the proper destination without someone going througt it and taking my tooth brush or running around with my speedos.  Then pay an extra fee for extra bags, unless you spend the rebate check we get from the federal govt. in May.  No wonder people like Roger and Uncle Buck are upset. By the way Roger, were you left off the polka band? :-)

I think this is a good thing, I work for the Airlines and people bring on way to many bags, Carry on bags shoud not be allowed, and the weight of the bags is overbearing.  I feel charging for extra bags is a great way for the airlines to make additional revenue and maybe people will learn to not pack so much.
