Raising Gas Taxes for Better Roads & Bridges?

A special commission is calling for drastic changes to fix aging bridges and roads and reduce traffic deaths. One of the proposals sure to get people fired up? Increasing federal gasoline taxes by up to 40 cents per gallon over five years.

The two-year study by the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission is the first to propose broad changes after the devastating bridge collapse in Minneapolis.

What's your thoughts on the situation, and the proposal?

LOL!! Wow.. raise gas prices to fix roads and stuff? Now, that is the funniest thing I have read today.

To Greg Davis.. do these people think? Obviously not. We live with a bunch of idiots. It's people like these retards that make our country like this.

All I have to say is goodbye America.

One more reason not to vote in national elections.

They are all on the same team.

Feds can always find money to give other countries(some with more money than we have) billions upon billions.....yet they want to tax us even more for gas..wich by the way mostly comes from some of these countries that are milking us dry.

They find 20 billion for Saudi Arabia....but cant find 300 million to give poor kids health care......what a joke.

Here's a thought, take away all the perks our goverment officials get, such as personal vehicles, free gas, hotel rooms and or apartments, airfare and free food.
Let them pay for things that the rest of us have to pay for, then see if they can come up with a reasonable solution to this problem.

Lets see, we can't build or properly maintain our road network, even though taxes are paid to accomplish this.. Where is that money? So now lets add more taxes so we can fix what we are already paying to fix.. Oh, didn't they just raise the Thruway tolls for a system that was suupose to be paid for already? We are slowly but surely going down the tube folks.....

I’m sick of filling out all the forms and then sending in my money.  Why not have your paycheck delivered directly to the government and let them decide how much we need to live on.  They can then send back anything they don’t use.  This would be so much easier and I wouldn’t have to concern myself with interest rates, dividends, stock prices and other things I do in an attempt to make a better life for my family and myself.

"Jack Schenendorf, the commission's vice chairman. He contended the tax increase would amount to "less than a cost of a candy bar and a fifth of the cost of a cafe latte" for the average U.S. motorist."

Does he realize that most cars hold more than one gallon, so his math is totally inaccurate.  My car holds 20 gallons.  Since when does a candy bar cost $8.00?

GAS TAX?!?!?  Why tax something that already costs us so much and is an essential part of our everyday lives?  Why not tax something that is not necessary and is increasingly becoming a burden to our society like TOBACCO??  Mr. Davis made a great point earlier when he said, "Why don't we raise the Tax to $2.00 a gallon ......then nobody will be able to afford to drive and we won't have to worry about the roads."

Our vehicles are an essential part of who we are and how we get around.  Why tax the essential item that provides for that to happen?  It's true, our leaders don't always "think" about all of the aspects of proposed taxes...and to be quite honest, we'll NEVER be happy with any choices our leaders make.  But if we do, in fact, have to tax something, why not have it be things that AREN'T necessary to our daily living?  Here's a list of examples:

Tobacco, Wine/Liquor, FAST FOOD, Luxury items such as jewelry...<---in general, things we don't NEED to survive and maintain our families.

I don't know, this is all just my 2 cents.

Why is it that the federal government has to step up and fix everything? Isn't it the local communities, cities, county's that are responsible for building and maintaining their roads and bridges? Or is this tax specific to interstate roads and highways? If that is the case we will likely be hit next with our local governments doing the same thing for our local roads and bridges. I have found that we can write all the letters and send messages to our government officials but it is always their decision in the end what they think as a group what is best for "us" regular citizens that have only one vote. Lately it has been a vote between which is the lesser of the evils on the ballots. I would like to be able to speak to our people seeking office and ask specific questions that I would demand specific answers to. I do not want to pick on anyone in particular here but last night listening to part of the debate I heard a question asked of Hillary and she replied by starting with "I am glad you asked that question because"... and she went on and on talking and saying approx 2000 words and she never answered the question. People have a tendency of losing focus and keeping track of what they are saying and following the run around themselves. I for one am tired of listening to thousands of words that do not answer questions being asked. We need to know in order to make a reasonable choice?

Ya, what a joke. What all of us forget, Is that we the people run this country...  We work to keep this country running every single day. Lets all stop working for a week and see what happens when the goverment can't tax us 33% on our paychecks. They need us more then we need them. Big deal we miss paying some bills, what are they going to due if we dont pay? Take things from us... Ok let them take it, they cant take our loved ones which really matters. I'm ready for a STAND... LET GO!!

I guess it's easier to spend other people's money when you don't have to pay for tolls, fuel etc. No wonder why people are leaving this s**thole state called NY. Funny how roads in other states are in great shape, even funnier, they are maintained with the taxes they already received. We're closing factories, laying off thousands of people, but the new mall's coming, along with the $6.50/hr jobs so don't worry. Here's an idea, let's raise the gas tax so nobody can afford to drive to look for real employment. But hey, I'm a politician, I make 100 + thousand for a few months of work, whether I work or not, and I can vote myself a raise to compensate for the tax on fuel I won't have to pay. When is enough really enough!

Okay lets just push the economy further into a looming recession. Why is it that the only way they can find to fix a problem is to add or increase taxes ? High gas prices are already hurting people and buisnesses this would just strain tight budgets even more, regardless of personal or buisness. I beieve that this would just kill what little economy grow that we have.

Geez, Save-On and Lake Side Trading would make even more money to buy up land. I don't know the what the Onodogas are selling their fuel under what name. Heck they can all stay under 10 cents a gallon that an "honest" business can. No DEC permit for the underground tanks.  The 2 cents a gallon for gas spill clean ups is not paid to the state. I'm sure with all the money made at Turning Stone. It sure wasn't made on winners. They are pressed for funds, tax them

When gas was 1.00 a gallon they got tax of 7% .07 cents. Now its over 3.00 a gallon 7% gets them .21+ cents a gallon. Where has all that increase Gone ???????????? Its just gimmy gimmy gimmy Increase Drivers license, Plates. Workers comp has made me homeless. I guess Its time to become stateless. Bush is talking new tax cuts and incentives, but if you don't make enough to pay taxes tax cuts mean nothing and incentives to buy something, you have to be able to buy it to begin with.

Everybody is against a gas tax increase but I don’t see any suggestions on other ways to come up with the money needed to maintain our highways.  How about lower wages and benefits for state and federal workers?

They already have a big tax on tobacco.  They use that money for their stop smoking campaigns.  Perhaps they could use a new gas tax for a stop driving campaign.

What has this world come to?  We are all starving for our basic needs because fuel prices have effected the costs of our everyday goods.  We, the ones that work everyday to raise productive members of society, to make this a better country than we have to live in, and yet we get no where.  This country, the good ol' U S of A, was founded on no taxation without representation and yet only some 200 years later we have such beauties as the Patriot Act ,weapons of mass distruction, Iranian boats "starting fights" etc.  It makes me sick that as a nation we have become such sheep and the fat wolves continue to slay us one by one.  What makes me sick is that we have let them do this to us.  Not enough of us questioned what the fat wolves were doing when we should have.  In all fairness it is not just this administrations fault.  We as a nation have been in decline for decades.  So to the new gas tax propsal I say why the H##% not.  Put one more nail in the coffin of Miss Liberty and say good-bye USA.  There is no solutions that any of us come up with that will work to save this nation.  We are in line to world globalization and we either survive it or it will take us anyhow.  Everything you think to be true is false and visa versa.  That is the way they want it.  So they get it.  We watch our "idol" shows and "reality" crap continueing to let the wool be pulled over our eyes.  So complain all you want.  B*^%^%$ up a storm.  It falls on deaf ears because they don't care about your opinion any more than they care about your life.  We are expendable and our income theirs to spend.  Food for thought.  What would they do if we all knew the trueth?  Example: Federal Income Tax law doesn't exist and is unconstitutional.  Do your homework.  You will find lots of treasures to make you proud to be American and human. I am posting to this string late so I am sure not too many of you will read this anyhow.  For the goverment official reading this for homeland securities sake, how do you feel about you job now? Does it make you feel better knowing we are all P*^^*&ed at "the man"?  Gas tax.  You kill me.
