State Comptroller to Audit Thruway's Books; Toll Hike Necessary?

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said Friday his office would audit the Thruway Authority
and urged the Thruway to delay its proposed toll hike until after the audit is done.

The State Comptroller’s office says it was contacted by several elected officials in recent days asking for the audit of the proposed toll increase. After examining the requests and investigating preliminary information, DiNapoli determined the audit was warranted.

Many have been asking why the Thruway needs to raise tolls an average of ten percent in January, followed by five percent increases in each of the following two years.

I remember a time when they said the thruway tolls were only temporary and now they are going up even more.  What happened to the thruway being free? Theres no need for a state road to be a toll road.  I think this is yet another stupid idea put into place by NYS

I don't buy the arguement by the Thruway Authority that the traffic is down on the thruway. I travel the thruway several times a week and my wife uses it daily and it is busier than ever. I think an audit is in line to see where all the previous tolls have gone. For what we pay to drive on that road it should be as smooth as glass but many rural roads are better.

You can't take away the tolls.  Look at all the state employees that would loose their free ride on our tax dollars.  You would need to get rid of administrative people, toll takers and others that are duplicated in the state highway department.  You would loose a source of revenue for the state that goes to help fund all these duplicate people.
Get rid of the tolls and the people associated with them and you would save the taxpayers a bunch of money.

ummm, not really sure. with ezpass now several toll takers have been laid off. Is the cost of EZPASS admin. more than the salaries of toll booth workers.? Also the thruway authority has taken over the canal system recently? last few years. If they increase tolls maybe it should be on the canal system. Traffic, worse than ever. I have driven the road daily since 1985, and traffic is way up in this area. Exit 41 to exit 35.....Get the Semi's off the thruway and a lot of wear and tear can be avoided. They are the ruddest drivers, speed in all types of weather, unsafe for us little gus when they spray the snow and slush and rain .  thanks...

"toll hike" not needed by any means. Traffic is extremely heavy. I travel it 5 sometimes 7 days aweek (34-39). Get rid of admin. helpers and such peoples.  As far as making thruway free, who is going to clean and fix it.  Maintence workers do a dam good job cleaning snow and ice off the road (exits 34-39) GOOD JOB AND THANKS :)

i would like to know how getting rid of tolls and people that work    there will save tax payers money.
if tolls come off tax payers will pay for the road
now if you dont use it you dont pay for it
so i think that people should know what they are talking about
before they start to talk about it.

charge em extra for speeding or other traffic infractions on the Thruway only. Maybe that will solve many of the problems. Don't raise the tolls raise the price of traffic violations maybe people will slow down and the ones that break the law pays for the highway
