Civil Union Debate Reaches Central New York

Tuesday night, outgoing Salina Town Supervisor Charles Iavarone is expected to propose a law that would, among other things, recognize same-sex partnerships. The law would invite gay couples to register with the town.

If approved, it could also allow gays and lesbians who work for the town to be eligible for certain health benefits for their partners. Iavarone says the human rights ordinance would also provide the same benefits to heterosexual couples who live together but are not married.

What’s your reaction to this proposal? Leave your comments below.

i'm not sure of the state laws in new york on this matter. i take a privacy point of view when it comes to gay issues. if your gay, thats your personal business; no parades, neon signs are necessary. keep it to yourself. make it publc , and your at the mercy of politics. so many important issues in life, this is a non issue. what about the 45% of americans who dont have health insurance. same sex marriages violates a trust in the establishment of christian values. be together, fine, but stay out of the politics .

With everything else that needs to be fixed in this Town, is this really a top priority for our Town Board? Sewer issues, capital improvement needs, an awful code enforcement department that does nothing all day, lack luster fire protection that you roll the dice and hope the volunteers have a crew that hour, etc, etc, etc.

This is not a priority Charles! God I hope Mr. Nicotra isn't afraid of causing waves and making change because that's exactly what this Town needs and lots of it!

Makes no sense - what will this affect?  Companies will not be required to provide benefits - State and Federal laws will trump this.  Pointless

Great idea.  Face it people, being gay is not going to go away, nor should gays have to hide for fear of all you so called Christians.  Acceptance is what needs to happen, and this is a step in the right direction.

Way to go Chuck.  Stand up and be proud of who you are.  I wish you all the best.  See you soon.  If you are willing to committ to someone for the rest of you life it shouldn't matter what your sexual preference is.  Kim

There are plenty of gay Christians. This is about people and their opinions. Charles Iavarone spends less then 5 hours in the office in one months time. His creditability is low. He needs to focus on why our taxes keep going up and what he is going to do to keep exsisting programs for our community and stop spending extra money that isn't there.

I am a Christian Evangelist to the 'gay' and lesbian community.  I truly have a heart for the homosexual man and woman.  I understand better than most the issues, the trials and concerns of 'gay' and lesbian men and women - for I once was 'gay.'
But something incredible and unbelievable happened -- I changed - completely.

That was over 12 years ago.  Today, I am happily married almost 11 years to an incredible, beautiful woman who knew me when I was 'gay' – a woman who never stopped praying for me.  We also have two beautiful little children together, a boy and a girl.  Life could never be more wonderful.  I am completely free of my homosexual thoughts, actions and desires.  I am completely happy with who I am today - a heterosexual male – the man God created me to be.

As a Christian I am against supporting this law. Living together and/or being gay is totally against what God teaches with his word. I do not hate them but I will not enforce their behavior. As for Christians doing such things please read your bible more carefully. I had many big problems I had to repent of, Jesus will help you with your struggles.

Their are NO gay Christians. Read Romans 1. I don't hate gays and they don't have to hide from, or because of me. Let them live their lifestyle. Just don't ask me to approve of, or support it.

I can accept them without accepting their lifestyle.

Ivarone finally shows up to fight for something, it totally amazes me!  I truly don't have a problem with what he is fighting for, but lets be real there are much, much bigger issues to deal with in the town of salina. As someone spoke last night, the sewers and water lines especially in mattyhole are so damn old and no one does a thing to improve them.  the only improvement i've seen is some damn trees being planted on route 11.  Big Deal that doesn't help the homeowner at all.   somebody just throw ivarone out the door and get him out of here.

i'm in support of human rights; the constitution says freedoms and rights that are ours in a free society. people should honor what the founding fathers intended; the document represents integrity , honor and to serve our country and god. people should reach out more to help each other as specified in the constitution; anyone who veers away from these ideals is a vilation of this country and our constitution ; ther is nothing in this proposal [town of salina ] that is covered in the constitution; therefore its an abomination in the eyes of humanity and GOD

If we're actually talking about a civil union, I'm in favor.  If I understand what a "civil union" is, it becomes a contract in the eyes of the law, so that the two participants take on legal obligations as well as the rights of other civilly recognized marriages, i.e. support obligations, etc.

There are a lot of things not specifically mentioned in the Constitution that are still legal and protected by the judicial system.

As for the religious issue, I don't care whether you approve of the "gay" lifestyle or not.  You are not, and should not be required to accept homosexuality as a morally acceptable behavior, if YOUR moral code does not accept it.  Just recognize that your Christian or Islamic or other religious principles do not make public law, and that secular morality and religious morality are not the same.

i understand what people are saying defending this proposed law. i respect different view points; but its time truth and honor take a priority. nothing in the constitution covers gay rights PERIOD. creating rules to siut this paticular group has to be a constitutional law; civil laws are not truth or fact . were in the worst shape as citizens in this country ever because we have gotten away from the founding fathers intentions. lets put america back on the straight and narrow before we become a benign union of welfare nade small percentage of people in the ruling class. eliminate the fringe groups in society , move towards the middle ; save the hard working AMERICAN PEOPLE AS STIPULATED BY THE FOUNDING FATHERS.
