Thruway Moving Closer To Raising Tolls

The State Thruway Authority is moving closer to increasing tolls by 5% in both 2009 and 2010.

The increases, approved by a committee Thursday, would be in addition to the 10% increase in cash rates that begins in January. This plan would include similar increases for EZ Pass users.

The AP reports "authority officials said the increases are needed because spiking gas prices are limiting travel, and that is cutting revenue needed for its $2.1 billion highway and bridge repair plan."

A toll hike wouldn't be all that bad, BUT. I drive the thruway on a regular basis between Rochester and Syracuse. The condition of the pavement in some spots is terrible. Considering that its a toll interstate highway. Its not acceptible to me, I've hit a couple pot holes. This summer even late this summer. That at 65 MPH my vechical was bounced into the passing lane. Where is the money from the tolls collected now being spent?? Paving a few miles here and there. I don't see the amount of traffic has decreased that much or any. I think its an excuse to dig deeper in our wallets. Since I 90 is a federal highway, the state receives Federal money to maintain it....MMMM

well if you ask me,  i think a surcharge aut to be added to gas on the NYS I90.  They'd still get extra cash and yet it'd make it easier for drivers to choose weather to get gas on i90 or befor they start there trip

A surcharge is a good idea but on the toll not the gas.  When gas prices go back down the tolls go back down.  This would work if the reason they give for raising the tolls, less travel due to spiking gas prices, is valid.

What happened to the the tolls being dropped after, what was it? 1995? The thruway wasn't supposed to be a toll road forever. Does anyone remember that. So now that gas prices have gone up, the tolls go up.  What does this do to the price of products being sold in stores that are transported by truck on the thruway?

The Thruway Authority needs to get rid of the Canal System, that's what is dragging it down. Since they made the Thruway responsible for the Canals the tolls have gone up. Also it is not just the Thruway these have to cover it is also some roads connecting to New York City and the Tappan Zee Bridge (which needs work) that OUR TOLLS  are paying for.

Whatever happened to the Thruway plan to eliminate tolls altogether when the Interstate was paid off? Someone there must have realized how stupid an idea that was. We all knew that was a pipe dream!

Great points... Why doesn't the canal system users PAY Tolls the same as we do on the Thruway?
Bridge repairs and road repairs are so necessary to create a smooth ride. The Thruway cuts a trip from Syracuse to Buffalo by 3 hours if going by Rt. 20&5. Then there is plowing in the winter and I assume they use lots of gas.
Has anything offset the use of ez-pass, less toll collectors?
Are the dollars from the Tolls, really going to improve the entire stretch of the Thruway? How much does come from the federal goverment?
Also, why did the Thruway Authority remove the I190 Toll road into Buffalo? That is a nightmare in consent repair?
Why is the stretch between Exits 49 and 55 FREE in Buffalo? Why do you have to PAY in Syracuse to ride between Exits 39 & 34A? Why should Buffalo be treated any differently than Syracuse?

The headline says "Tolls going up 10%".  That gets your blood boiling and ready to fight.  If you read the article you find out it is 5% next year and 5% the following year.  I think TV and newspaper writers go out of their way to get the most negative reaction out of their readers.  I guess you can't sell the product with just the simple truth up front in headlines.
If the cost of gas is causing this increase, why didn't they tie the tolls to gas prices?  When gas goes back down so do the tolls.  The reason for the increase is just a bunch of BS.

This is insane...you raise the tolls because the ridership is down....this is crazy considering the fact the tolls were supposed to be repealed in 1999.  The people who think its ok to continue with tolls and increases go ahead and pay them, you must be loaded.  If you like tolls so much then maybe tolls on I-81, I-86, I-88 would be okay too with you!  Lets get real, the reason there are tolls, is to maintain a huge beaurocracy and teamster union.  There is no need to increase tolls the traffic should be able to support it.  I -81 and all the other interstates are just fine and the maintenance on these roads have been kept up well.  The New State public is again being sold a bill of unnecessary goods and crammed down there throats.
Repeal the tolls and get rid of the huge beaurocracy.it is draining the American public. Don't forget fuel tax is suppose to pay for road construction on a state and federal level...This is a double charge!  Get rid of the Thruway Authority and the  complacent leadership which is sucking money out of a already over taxed public.

I think if tolls are raised, it's just one more reason for me to get out of this godforsaken State and this is coming from someone who was born and raised in this State and used to love it here. But, instead of more reasons to stay lately there seem to be many more reasons to leave. There's no jobs available here because the taxes are too high, we also seem to pay more for gas than many other states, and now you want to raise tolls again too! This State certainly is not attracting businesses, job seekers, or tax paying citizens. However, if someone wanted to go on welfare, where do you think they would do it if they could? You got it - why not New York? The welfare system here is a mess! I think before raising thruway tolls and killing those who you are aldready killing with high costs, you ought to look at how money is being spent elsewhere.

Joe hit the nail on the head. If they want less traffic on the ScrewWay, then raise the tolls. If they want more traffic and more revenue, they should lower the tolls. Either way, the poor condition of the road surface on NY's I-90 needs to be addressed.

A "HIKE" on the NYSThruway,,is not needed. Just becouse the state has a plan in order, does not warrent an increase. I personally think that the RT 90 is way out of order with all the bumps and terrible patches that the NYS workers are trying to do. I would much rather travel interstate 81. Why oh why can't Rt 90 be in the same shape as Rt 81???? The state is trying to make the all mighty dollar,,what ever happened to making the pennies and letting the dollars take care of themselves????
