1.  If they are illegal why would they apply for a drivers license?
2.  If they do apply why don't they arrest them and send them back to their original home land?
3.  How can the state of New York give an illegal alien a legal identification card?
4.  Will the new license declare that the person holding the license in an illegal?
5.  Will they be able to use their new license to apply for further taxpayer provided assistance from the state of New York?
6.  Will the state of New York force the counties to provide taxpayer provided assistance to ilegals?

Getting a drivers license is a privlige of being a United States Citizen! No we should not be issuing them to ilegals! We are already doing more than we should for them! Lets start helping Legal Citizens who are down on thier luck!  

Having a drivers license will make it so much easier for illegals to, as is their wont to do illegal things,  get other legitimate(hah!) documents. Can Spitzer and/or New York be sued it an illegal with a drivers license uses it to do something nasty?

It apparently seems citizenship of the US means very little to our government officials of the day.  The very fact these people are in the country illegally makes them a criminal.  So instead of sending them back from where they came, our government officials are now offering illegals drivers license, education, medical services and welfare.  What next, are we going to give them a right to vote?  Which I am sure a great many are doing anyway.  

If our government does not have the ability to control our own borders, maybe it's time bring our soldiers home to defend our country here.  With the millions of illegals in this country, it seems our government officials have lost all control over the situation.  

If this situation is allowed to fester, the USA in time will be nothing more than a home for illegals (criminals) and those that support them.  I am sorry, but the right for one to better themselves, does not give them the right to break the law be entering illegally.

How does the government expect those immigrants that entered the USA legally, to have RESPECT for their new country, when the leaders of our country have no RESPECT for it themselves.

If the ilegals had any RESPECT they would enter legally. What does Spitzer do next, pay for the insurance and plates? Maybe my memory has gone amuck, but don't you NEED to have a SS number and a BIRTH CERTIFICATE ? When we who are born in this country apply for insurance for our LEGAL cars, the insurance company does a credit check, how is this done? by giving your SS number. Why don't we all move down to Mexico where we can have a maid, cook and nanny, live like Kings and Queens, get cheaper health care? Spitzer and the entire governing group in this country have lost their minds. We are once again proving to the world that we are no longer a country that stands by OUR citizens. The seniors are starving, have no decent health care, our children can't even spell. We are doing down the tubes in a hurry. The rest of the world is mocking us and looks at us no longer as a 'leader,' what a disgrace!

Twenty two illegal aliens were found in Oswego last night after police pulled over a bus at a sobriety check point.

Zappala Farms of Fulton owns the bus. It was pulled over on State Route 3 in the Town of Granby at about 9:30 last night. After questioning, a border patrol officer determined 22 illegal immigrants from Mexico and Guatemala were on board.

All were taken into custody without incident. The immigrants are being detained and processed at a City of Oswego border patrol station.

I'm not a big fan of having illegal immigrants...period.  That said, there's nothing in the law that I know that requires you to be a U.S. citizen to hold a driver's license.  U.S. "green" card holders may get one, and they are not citizens.

The larger problem is that the current illegals often have cars but no driver training and possess neither license nor insurance.  When they do have a collision and do damage to things and people, there's no coverage whatever.  At least this way, there will be some, however small, control exerted, because they will have to produce swome form of identification to get that license.

Of course,  I'd still like to have them sent back and make them enter the country legally, like so many other immigrants do.

Didnt California recall the Governor a few years back.  I seriously think its time to start thinking about this.  The man is a disgrace.  I hope all of you that voted for this arrogant fool are happy.

I see what this is.  It's not about Democracy or being an Illegal Immigrant to our State Government.  It's about the money.  It's wrong no matter how you look at it.  Give them a licence and you might just as well state they are citizens.  They'll have the ID to proove it.

I don't think Mr. Spitzer will ever get re-elected.  I voted for him, but he is definitely showing signs of "bush-itiis", that delusion where power becomes a disease.  Mr. Spitzer is over-stepping his bounds.  You do NOT give a LEGAL document, i.e. a driver's license, to an ILLEGAL in the United States.  

I gotta agree with Steve, it's all about the money.  It really sounds to me like the Governer is turn a blind eye to illegal immigrants in order to make a buck.  What our state and federal gov't should be doing is aggressively deporting those who are not our citizens and are breaking the law.  We need to cut off the expense of paying for the social programs that illegal immigrants are getting.  We as a state, and as a country are heading closer and closer to socialism, with our gov't looking for ways to give out tax payer dollars.

So, after looking into what the Governor proposes, I find that he's not planning to invite illegal immigrants to obtain licenses.  What he has proposed is to eliminate the requirement to provide a Social Security number in order to get one.  Of course, many illegal residents do not have SSAN's, so this has the effect of enabling them.  Given the apparent ease with which SSAN's can be bought, though, it's not much of a detriment to anyone.

The real downside is that licenses issued without such proof will soon be unacceptable proof of ID at airports - that will cause more significant problems than worrying about whether an illegal has a license.  DHS and the TSA will soon require a standardized form of government issued identification to be allowed into the boarding area and on an airplane.  How many people have some other form of ID that they could use (like a passport)?

I don't think this should even have to be a topic of debate.  I find it absolutely appalling that the Govenor is even considering something like this.  If I were to go to another country illegally I highly doubt I would get the same treatment as the illegals get here.  Sometimes I wonder what being an American Citizens really means.  I don't get free health care, or my mortgage paid for I don't get any free hand outs so...If I'm here legally and can't get help from my own Government then why should an illegal immigrant get those things handed to them???

You are correct, that a individual does not have to be a US citizen to hold a driver's license.  As a legal immigrant myself, I had to have a Social Security number to acquire one.  I could not legally acquire a Social Security number until I became a Permanent Resident of the US.

OK - this may be a mute point - but when I went and got my license (and motorcyle permit more recently) you needed a certain amount of points, ie: photo id from work, sherriff, etc., social sercurity card, and close to everything down to your shoe size and none of them could be from the same agency.  My point is this - if they dont have a ss # - then the "great state of new york" cannot give them a license.  Am I wrong?

In the broader analysis, illegal aliens should be given licenses to drive, FOR THE PROTECTION OF EACH AND EVERY AMERICAN CITIZEN ON THE ROAD.  Otherwise, the American citizen will have to shoulder the entire financial burden!  NO LICENSE means NO LIABILITY AND COLLISION INSURANCE!!!  Want it or not, it is a fact of life .... illegal aliens have been in the U.S. since the landing of the Mayflower.  In fact, almost every "American" on this soil is descended from once-upon-a-time illegal alien who eventually became legal.  It is an inevitable fact that millions of illegal aliens will continue to drive cars out of dire necessity (to drive to work, to drive their children to school, to drive their aged parents to hospitals, etc. especially in states like California where there is no subway system).  Take this example:  A car driven by an illegal alien smashes into a carful of one family consisting of Dad, Mom, children and baby.  Since the illegal alien has no insurance, it will not cost him ZILCH - ZERO dollarwise as he does not have enough money to pay.  The other car has to take up the entire costs including all deductibles!!  HAS NOT ANYONE EVER THOUGHT OF THESE CONSEQUENCES?  Not to give a license means that there will be many nervous drivers on the road.  Let's just hope that the victim of this nervous unlicensed driver is not your own kid ... an accident that could have been avoided by a driver license.  I think the American citizen is at the losing end, and I believe that protecting the American citizen is behind the Governor's decision.  I am an American citizen and I want an illegal alien driving a car to have a driver's license for my protection and my family's protection.  

I don't think that getting a driver's license guarantees that you will also obtain insurance. What giving NY licenses to illegals means is that if they get into an accident and have no insurance that the state will (or should be) sued for damages. Naturally, the illegal will scoot back across the border if they get into trouble...

I support the governor's plan because many good deaf aliens are learning English, good people, so on as they have no such good education back at home in their native. USA is the only best place for the deaf here for more education, paying tax, and what more is FREEDOM!
