Salina Town Supervisor Rarely Working, Is it Fair?

People who work in the Salina Town Offices say Supervisor Chuck Iavarone is hardly ever there, yet he's still being handed a healthy paycheck.

Iavarone does show up for town board meetings. When we questioned him about his attendance, he said “I've only got 3 months left here, so I have to secure my future somehow, that's why I went out and got a second job and I'm working probably 50 hours a week at that job.”

Iavarone didn't get his party's support for re-election, so he admits he's not as dedicated as he once was.

There's no town law mandating Iavarone have any set office hours. He says he now fits in town work, on his own time and only comes in when he has to.

What are your thoughts about the situation? Post your comments below.

Well the Town of Salina is even dumber than Chuck for paying someone to do a job who can show up whenever he likes.

This is exactly the reason the party didn't give him the endorsement. The Town of Salina Republican Committee saw, after he was in office, that he was more concerned with himself than the town. he turned his back on the people who helped him get elected and has no loyalty. Chucky needs to grow up and learn how to take responsibility. He is a little whine ass that blames everyone else for his short-comings. I heard he was busy watching his favorite soaps in the afternoon... working 50 hours a week? Doing what? Mall security? Doesn't the Army Reserve have some kind of weight program?

AS a town employee I am upset. Chuck dismissed a competent Matk Nicotra as Deputy Supervisorand replaced him with Mike Giarusso. Then evrything started going downhill. Giarusso was at our townhall evryday covering up for Chuck. Why didn'y Giarusso tell the town board about Chuck never being at work. What type of political deal did Giarusso make with Ivaronne. Something is wrong. Giaurusso should be investgate for his failure to tell the board Chuck wasnt coming into work.

The members of this Town Board have a responsibility to see that Chuck does his job. If he doesn't, they have a responsibility to see that he is removed. I would ask the Town Attorney to look into these allegations and if true, have it put to a vote at the next Town Board public or executive meeting. This guy only got elected because the previous supervsisor wasn't doing the job either!

Unbelievable.  I think that about sums it up.  If anyone in a paid position, in ANY job didn't show up to work but a few hours a week, they would have been fired by now. I think he knows the process will take longer then the term he has left in office and is just blowing it off.  The other sad thing is is that at the last T.O.S meeting last week, a resident stood up and called him on it, and all he had to say was "thank you".

It's his name and reputation he's ruining.  Not to mention as he gets older and has kids and decides to stay in town,  the parents of his childrens friends will tell them about how he was elected to office, and accomplishsed nothing.  Way to set up your future Chuck!  Those that voted for him will see him on the street somewhere and laugh or snarl.  It's going to feel awful knowing everyone is talking behind his back.  Maybe this new job he has will require him to move out of state.  We voted for someone we thought could really make a difference with a young attitude and fresh new ideas.  The jokes on us Chuck.  Good riddence!!!!

I think I'll apply for a rebate in my taxes.

After years of being a local resident , and watching the comments that have been given to me and others, has been the demise of our community and state tax program. When you go into any office, it sounds mor e like a realestate office than a tax office. Using methods of realestate "trending" which raises your house value based on a sale of a similar house. All find and dandy, if you were selling. Most of us are long term hoem owners, which want to stay, but this will force everyone away after a while. Our taxes have gone up min 35% in assessments since 2003 and actual cash bil of 25% high since then. I think its time to stop this method of taxing. Tax only what you need to run town, not how much can they make off of house......Yes 41k salary is stupid...........

Oh, that's why the taxes keep going way up every year. Salina has enough money to pay a employee that isn't there but can't afford to pay for the repair of their own sidewalks. Stop wasting our money!!!

This just is not much of a story--almost every Town hall has experienced a time when one of the electeds was out for weeks on on end. A couple of years ago one of the other elected officials in Salina had a terribly ill family member and was out for several months and was still paid. Certainly her reason was more valid than Iavarones, but i bet hes still getting the late night calls from residents on every subject under the sun, and thats got to be worth something. Overall he has been far better than the disaster I expected when he surprised everyone and was elected in 2005.

Welcome to politics.  Fortunately, I live a long way from Salina.

Keep in mind, however, that whatever charter governs the town offices, he's an elected official, not an employee, and apparently there's no specific guidance indicating whether he is required to work 10 or 20 or 40 hours or not.  Those who are actually employees are expected to work the established scheudle.  Unfair?  Probably, but the system is working - he's not coming back for re-election (and from the bad publicity, he probabl couldn't get elected, either).

carl , the guidelines you speak of are the same ones this trashbag used. you seem to be on the same mindset as chuck. the hours a town supervisor should put in to be effectiveand honorable should be at least 45-60 hours per week. the more i read about this guy , i think both of you belong in [cement shoes] local government has to be as honorable and devoted as city, state, or national . you seem to make jest of the situation . every ruling or lack of a ruling cost the lives of human life. this is why we have to devote our time in local government ; itds not fantsy salary for your freind chuck and you, carl, for video games and parties and new cars. please leave the community forever for the sakes of the children, good families, and religious leaders , who want to make the communitie a better place to live.

john,

Why are you trashing me? I said I don't live there.  My town pays our supervisor about a tenth of what Salina does.  I didn't quote any guidelines.  I simply noted that Salina does not have regulations sufficient to make their supervisor work.  I don't admire that or him, but it's the way things are.  Don't like it?  Get involved and change it.  Get him fired.  Yell at the town board to change their town charter so they get their money's worth from the supervisor. Don't re-elect him (the current solution being exercised).

I've seen a lot of town governments where the best thing that happened was uninvolved politicians.

carl, sorry , maybe i jumped the gun  as far as your involvement or living in the town. but the othere things i stated , i stand by; we need to reach back to the old days; good family values, neighbors helping each other, communities growing and thriving , communicate with the people ; get the pulse of the situation and through the politcal process , make the area a viable and wonderful pace to live for our children

"It's in the record, look it up" said Casey Steingel. Were one to do the math 5 hours a week = $ 157 per hour for the Salina town supervisor. His position may be that he only worked one 5 hour week but sources close to  the town hall know better. This has been going on for months. It has even been reported that he directed his secretary to drive to the Syracuse tavern he manages 50 hours a week to bring him official town paperwork to sign. "Ain't" that something? I also gahter the climate at town hall is at an all time low because no one can get an answer on important issues necessary to process official business. Perhaps equally disturbing is the dem's candidate for town supervisor this fall, Mike Giarrusso. He was appointed by our absent(minded) Chuck as his deputy. He has been in town hall ( Chuck's office) almost daily. Talk about a coverup! Signing paperwork and paychecks on a supervisor's behalf has conditions. An investigation should be launched addressing the legality of an appointed deputy, in actuality, assuming the "fulltime" duties of a supervisor who elects not to report to work. If Mr. G wants to be town supervisor, he should distance himself from what smells very bad legally and at the very least promotes a terrible public mistrust. Looks like the "ole boys club if he gets elected.

Youre missing the point on Giarrusso. He has been in Town Hall daily for the last four years. Since he retired from his career job last spring, he has spent more time on town business than previously. To be fair, Nicotra has been generally available too--I think we have a choice between fair (Mark) and excellent (Giarrusso) candidates. And lets face it, Iavarone was a flash in the pan, elected after the previous Supervisor shot her mouth off one too many times.

Iavarone got in as a backlash against Mary Ann and he failed to live up to expectations. If he hadn't withdrawn, chances are good that he  too would have been dumped by the voters. We seem to be finally entering an era of awakening by the  voters.  My personal voting philosophy has become:  "If they're in, they need to be OUT!" Nothing's getting done by the "powers that be," so let's let someone else try. If they don't do what we need  done, get rid of them too! Sooner or later, political office seekers will get the message, (and I hope it's in my lifetime.)
