Central New York Bridge Ratings

The State Department of Transportation has released to NewsChannel 9 the bridge inspection ratings of all 364 bridges that handle traffic across Onondaga County.

Some of the structures belong to the local government; others are managed by the state. The State DOT inspects them all. If the bridge is locally-owned, the DOT gives their findings to the towns and villages to correct any problems.

Click Here for a Spreadsheet file
with information on every bridge rated below a "5." How are the bridges by you? Do you live near a bridge on the list? Leave your comments below.

i live in dewitt, near the butternut creek bridge 481 and kinne rd. these bridges appear to be as safe as the others in the county. it would seem more likely that he bridges whose foundations are in water directly, as the one in minnesota , would requie attention on top priority.  i think the infrastructure in new york may be towards the top in the usa. many other states , seem to build from the water  up which requires more attention. hopefully, we will correct any problems, so to insure the safety of our citizens.

Carson, come on now the only time anyone cares about us Oswegonians is when we make national news for record snow fall! lol. But back to the bridges ordeal. I know of alot Bridges here in Oswego County that need replacing. In fact it seems to me they were going to replace Bridge St. Bridge in Oswego this year and they never did. Ya know why, cause they didnt want to interupt Harborfest. Go figure! There is another big write up about bridges at www.railroad.net. But they are talking about railroad bridges in there! Which too me plays a big role too. If ya wanna read them go to that web site, click on forums, scroll down to New York State Railfan, then click on the bridge forum. Its pretty interesting. Ya think some of these road bridges are bad, you should hear some of the stories about RR bridges too. I can name a few that constantly get hit by trucks because the morons dont know how to read signs. Someday one of these RR brdiges will come down when a train full of Haz-Mat following behind. Wake up Onondaga and Oswego Counties. Quit worrying about your Tobacco Free Network crap and get your crap together!

Are they going to wait until a disaster happens to replace the Bartell Rd. bridge. It has been falling apart for years. Every year they say it will be replaced. My children will ride on a bus over that bridge twice a day when school starts and that makes me very nervous. This bridge received a 2.9 rating (very unsafe). All the other bridges rated 3 or less have been CLOSED. Why is this bridge still being used? Heavy machinery trucks travel over this bridge every day. They say it will be replaced in 2008, well if it needs to be completly replaced then why is it being used at all!

kcharo I agree.  My children and I and many members of my family go over the Bartell Rd. Bridge  a few times a day.  We have been traveling over that bridge for many years 30 I believe.  It is a terrible bridge, I really did not know until yesterday how bad it really is. This is crazy, it takes a diasater like the the  35W and we now have our "inspectors" doing there job correctly.  Thats sad! Typical goverment workers.....

SOMEDAY AFTER ENOUGH BRIDGE COLLAPSES i would love to see a slightly new CLOSURE LIST.....
ANYTHING that goes below 3.0 gets closed to bring it up to a MIN of 3.5 and higher.

THEN after 5 to 10 yrs the slider moves up a notch higher....
ANYTHING BELOW  3.1 IS CLOSED AND FIXED / REPLACED SO IT WILL BE 3.5 AND HIGHER.... And so eventually it will be ANYTHING BELOW 3.5 WILL BE CLOSED AND FIXED / REPLACED TO BRING IT TO 3.5 PLUS.....

That way maybe NY STATE will avoid any mishappenings where many end up in the drink [river] or on some tracks [not great if there is a passing train when the bridge goes down] and thus save MANY lives by updatting how bridges get closed and repared OR replaced.

THOSE ARE THE TOUGH STANDARDS I WOULD PUT IN PLACE IS I WAS EVER A GOVENOR OF NYS..... I would hope some BRAVE govenor [maybe Spitzer can be brave] to impliment the tougher measures to avoid bridges going down [UNLESS IT WAS A GOD CREATED EVENT]

gkeitterjkd2- wake up, while your ideas are, to say the least ambituos... they are not feasible.

Have you even thought about bridge safety before minn.???

How about Telephone poles...we never think about them....but if one were to fall, killing 9 people (somehow)...then its the people like you who are immediate experts on things and say "all telephone poles.... unsafe....strict inspections....yadi yadi blah blah......"
