Worry About Calories When You Eat Fast Food?

Some New York City fast food restaurants are fighting with the city over whether they should post calorie information on their menu signs. It's a new law in the city, that was passed several months ago, but has only recently gone into effect.

Some lawmakers in Albany are keeping a close eye on how everything works down there. There are some trying to push through a similar bill for the state. It would require restaurants to publish the number of calories in each item on the menu.

When you stop at a fast food restaurant, do you care how many calories are in what you eat?

First of all, I try very hard NEVER to stop at fast food restaurants. The reason is I and most health conscious people know that those restaurants rarely offer anything nutritionally sound, lowfat or healthy...the exception is Subway which I go to frequently for a satisfying lunch...my husband also likes their subs and sometimes they're what we have for a quick summertime dinner! Subway lists the calorie and fat contents for their subs including their dressings and  cheese options. Subway choices are wonderful ones if you want to limit fat and high calories in your daily intake.  I'm "sold" on Subway and whenever my husband and I travel if we can find a Subway that's our stop for lunch! We try never to eat at a Macdonald's,Dunkin' Donuts, or the other fast food options like Burger King or Roy Rogers or fattening ice cream offerings  that are the main choices along the NY State Thruway rest areas. Nothing but unhealthy choices in my opinion ( Please note I'm not an employee of Subway!)...I just love their subs! So YES I'd love to see fast food eateries and all restaurants list the nutritional facts somewhere in plain sight. Most citizens make a habit of reading the nutritional labels on the sides of packages. So why not have that information on the food choices in our restaurants? Although I don't consider Applebee's a fast food restaurant, it is another health conscious eatery I always pick. They have very lean choices even desserts! I hope in the future we'll see clear nutritional facts on every menu in the state! Here! Here!

ABSOLUTELY!!!  I travel a lot and find it extremely difficult to eat healthy.  Calorie, fat and carb info would be very helpful.  Now I have to carry around the internet printed sheets for every restaurant out there in case we stop somewhere.

if you are eating fast foods, apparently calories arent on your priority list. with that being said , everyones metabolic rate is different. a healthy diet and moderate amounts is the key to being healthy. as far as printing calories on fast food, is it really helpful; most people that eat it regularily arent counting calories; and the once in a whiles, its not necessary; i think new york is the most over regulated state in the union; lets not add one more.

I do not see the difference if they are placed on the labels or not.  People that eat "fast food" are not the most healthy people to begin with.  I can see something being listed in a pamphlet at a sit down restaurant if requested by the consumer, but not on the menu or fast food containers (not to mention, where would they put all of their advertisements on the containers of they had to list this "important" information?)

Just another useless law trying to be passed to waste time instead of something "constructive", if people want to ruin their lives etc... let them do so.  Better yet, get rid of all fast food and we wouldn't have the highest population of obesity.  I am so glad to see we over pay our law makers to sit and ponder what they can throw at business' next or who they can harm besides themselves.

Posting the calorie content of meals would be an additional tool for consumers to use in making an intelligent decision when selecting where and what they eat.  Perhaps it would start the fast food vendors competing for who can make healthy foods as desirable as their TV commercials try to make their regular menu items appear.

I agree with Mouse, but can i say something?

I totally agree that if people want to ruin their lives by being obese, then so be it.  But the other day, i saw a woman, about 350lbs, walk out of Burger King, with four children following behind.  These children WERE MORE OBESE THAN HER!!!!! (in age-weight comparison).....That woman is slowly killing her children.  It makes me so sick, children do not have the ability to make rational thoughts about their wieght and such, this woman should be looking after them.  If you are one of these people, and are reading this, for god's sake, take a look at yourself and what you are doing to your children.

its more prevalent in todays generation, than say 25-35 years ago. when i was a kid; so long ago, it was a once amonth treat; being raised to eat properly. today , its become an every day thing; its also much cheaper to eat at home, buying groceries and cooking solid healthy food. calorie counting, labeling the food would be benefitial, if the people that were obese would look carefully, and be aware of their health. i dont think its applicable with todays generation of everyday fast food eaters. their fate is in their own ignorance to healthy living.

Sorry, folks.  If you stop at afast food place and buy a big juicy double cheeseburger, you obviously are not concerned about calories.  Just enjoy the meal and worry about it later.  If you are concerned, buy a salad.

What concerns me is that our poiticians have nothing better to do than pass laws regulating our food habits.  We should be much more concerned about their willingness to interefere with our personal behavior than the caloric content of french fries.  I'm sure they are well meaning, but I'd prefer they provide money to educate people, especially kids, about healthy foods than criminalize the fats we use to cook.  You can still buy lard and butter and margarine in the grocery store, but for how long?
