Dollar Store Dangers

It seems like a great way to save money, stores that sell everything from laundry detergent to party supplies, all for a dollar.

However, since a nationwide recall of counterfeit toothpaste, new questions have been raised about how safe the products are.

What do you think about the safety of dollar store products? Should the government be doing more?

I think that if the government is not going to do something more about it than at least NY State should do something to crack down on them.  I have stopped shopping at dollar stores over the last few years because of those reasons in your report. You get low quality items. The foods that I have seen have almost always been past or near the expiration date and I would not feed that to my family. Almost any Dollar Store that I have been in has been so packed in with stuff that it is unorganized and is a mess, with stuff blocking the aisle ways so you have a hard time getting through. That alone has got to be some kind of code violation.  The items they sell are not safe and they should not be allowed to sell them. They should be held accountable. It seems like nobody in this industry is ever liable for their actions.  If they are selling unsafe outdated and illegally imported items than someone needs to shut them down and then fine them for all of the "Dollars" that they have made off of us!

does that include the dollar stores in oswego as well? i shop at my local dollar store and do not have the problems that they have found at these other dollar stores.... dollar genereal on bridge street in oswego has great stuff, not all of it is a 1.00 though.. there are things there that cost more than..... but again we have stores where things are only 1.00. the dollar tree out by walmart in oswego, there stuff is the same way.... no out to date food nor do they have things on the shelfs that are ages old.... and you get what you pay for.... if your a bargin shopper well then you bargin where you gel low prices, and therefore you again get what you pay for at a dollar store....

I was in the Dollar Tree Store in Western Lights last night.  I saw the Colgate and Aquafresh Toothpaste at a couple displays in there.  I thought it was a good deal but didn't buy any.

I never buy personal hygiene or food products from the dollar store.  For these items its worth it to buy brand name stuff or at least store brand.  My best score was a gooseneck light that clips onto my hat for night fishing.  Dropped it in the lake a few nights ago.  Didnt care.  Only a buck.

Susan - The Government has bigger fish to fry than monitoring dollar stores.  If you dont like them, dont shop there.

the soap supplies and snacks, some food items; bought at the dollar tree are worthwhile . actually, most of the deals at dollar stores are good savings. batteries, kitchen utensils, cat food ect;  maybe, like any manufactured product it was a bad batch , dollar stores might be putting a dent in places like walmartor other major stores . i think its good for people in this high price economy , to help them survive. personally, i think the quality is sufficient for clean living

There is a reason it is being sold in the dollar stores.  Come on people.  If you could sell it that cheap and still make a profit then everybody would be selling it for a dollar.  There is a reason that dollar stores get these big discounted bargains from manufacturers.

We shop at a Dollar store.  We don't buy any food or health products there but there are some great buys.  Cleaning supplies, greeting cards, decorations and even some clothing items.  If it makes you feel better go some place else and pay more.

thats a valid  point, jack; but observe in these big stores, alot of products dont sell, therefore dollar stores serve a good purpose for the manufacterers who want to get there goods sold even at paultry prices. again, ill statew its well for the consumers who cant afford to buy at the going rertail price; iwould like to see my fellow man helped to function normally in this world.

i do not shop at any dollar store anymore but i see how wallmart and other stores are selling expensive toys for children like thomas the train toys that are being made in china that are not healthy i believe the toy company and may other stores should start having things made in  the U.S. instead of china to save a buck and then charging us a huge amount.

I was never impressed with the quality, displays or where the products where manufactured.  Toys my children received for christmas from grandparents broke most of the time getting out of the package or soon after.  I would rather they buy 1 $10 gift than 10 $1 gifts.  Its not the quantity - its the thought and quality that it will last a while for them to enjoy.  Other toys I worried about lead, or peeling paint.  Foods often high in sodium and no flavor at all.  Not worth the gas to go out of my way.  Support American made products and foods as much as we can.

May I remind you, that all of the products-catfood, dog food, tooth paste-- OH and yes the latest- Fisher Price children TOYS were all from CHINA. What is this country IMPORTING! Don't we have the power not buy products made in CHINA. Always check for and not buy items made in CHINA if it is going into a living being. We need to get SMART about imported items- they are killing our economy and now US and our pets.
