Bush Discusses Iraq Report About Progress

A new Bush administration report says the Iraqi government is making only mixed progress toward goals for political, military and economic reform. But President Bush says that's not reason to start a troop withdrawal yet. He says that's a decision military commanders should make.

The Senate's top Democrat says it's time President Bush admits his Iraq policy has failed. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid responded to the administration's progress report on Iraq by saying the president should work with both parties to craft a new policy for Iraq.

What do you think about the situation?

I believe that the country WANTED to go to war...we needed to go to war...so we did. Now that it's gotten ruff people want to back out...you just cant do that. The biggest reason we cant win this war is because its not really a war. Since the 1960's and 70's the Hippie's (if you will) runied this country. You cant win a war with politics...which all the conflicts that we've had since WWII have had. You let the Geneals fight the war, and we will win. Congress and the Executive branch have hired/appointed the generals...let them do thier jobs...and YOU stay out of it. Also, the media needs to stay out of the war zones. They should not be allowed to ride with our troops. When this happens you have people like Brian Ross giving away tips and hints to our enemy.

Lets use some common sense please. Is this war a lost cause YES, is it the presidents fault...NO...its the media, congress, the vice president and the ex-sec. of defense.

Although, according to ABC news last night, the program has only been in play for about three weeks-the problems are so inlaid  and have to do with so much more than what is actually being said that this war will be never ending and absolutely nobody is going to win it.

dear rep., the hippies didnt start the viet nam war; please study your history books. iwas there; it was a waste of human life; the same as the iraq war; we stopped a ruthless dictator, sadaam; who we financed and gave billions of dollars of weapons to fight iran.  no weapons of mass destruction were recovered, the politics of the republican party is the reason we went there; causingthe pointless death of thousands of americans as well as iraqs. be we destroyed our creation, sadaam; so now ,lets put reagan and bush on trial for aiding in mass murders. dont tell me about vietnam war; you wernt anywhere near me, grunt.

The Romans conquered for 500 years and couldn't control it.  The Ottomans, Turks, and British (after WWI) also couldn't.  History should reveal what the U.S. strategy should be.  And in turn keep a watch out for sucker punchers (N. Korea, China, Canada, etc.).  My friend had this beautiful lawn that he spent countless hours on.  He also had an attractive wife.  She left him while he was mowing the lawn.

It's this simple:

We should have gone to Afghanistan.  That's where al Qaida was.  We should have stayed there, closed the borders and caught/killed every last one of them.

Instead, the neo-con(men) wing of the GOP was convinced we could remake the entire middle east if we could just knock over an "easy" country like Iraq.  So we trumped up the evidence and invaded.  None of this is in dispute.  Neo-cons argued in public several years before the Iraq invasion that invading Iraq would bring democracy to the region.

And the result of this old-man's war fantasy?  Iraq's an unwinnable mess.  Hundreds of civilians die each week.  Forget the casualties on both sides of combat for the moment -- the people who are really gonna hate us are the ones who lost innocent loved ones.  And Afghanistan?  We pulled so many troops out of there that it, too is sliding back into chaos.  Opium production is at an all-time ...er ... high.

Folks remain confused about which war we're fighting.  Iraq was optional.  By staying, we're giving al Qaida and the other radical groups their greatest recruiting tool ever.  Of course we're gonna get attacked again.  Only an idiot thinks otherwise.  But we're far more likely to be attacked again BECAUSE we invaded Iraq.  Again, that's an assertion backed up by the kinds of government reports that the President doesn't like to talk about in public. It's also backed up by common sense -- stir up a hornet's nest and you're gonna get stung.  The longer you stand by the nest, the more stings you're gonna get.

The President's claim that he lets the generals dictate strategy is not only wrong, it's unconstitutional.  Our constitution provides for civilian control of the military, lest we turn into Argentina or Indonesia.  Civilians run the military.  War should always be subservient to the broader needs of the country.  And when Bush says he's leaving it up to the generals, he's lying (as usual).  He's NEVER left it up to the generals.  Gen. Shinseki was fired for telling Bush he wasn't putting enough boots on the ground to secure the peace.  Gen. Pace was not reappointed to the Joint Chiefs for similar reasons.

As for the media, if you want to live in Russia, buy your ticket now.  99.99% of the war reporting is solid, accurate and does no harm. If you wanna get angry, get angry about the source who leaked that story to him and the other sources who confirmed it.  You do not want to live in a country where journalists are not on hand to provide independent accounts, if for no other reason that that someday, a Democrat will be running the country again and you'll be suspicious of everything and wondering why the hell the press isn't doing its job.

Bottom line:  Rep, you sound like someone who's scared crapless and wants someone to make it all right.  No one's gonna make it all right.  It's always gonna be scary to live in this world.  But there are people in this world who need you to be scared in order for them to do what they want to do.  When you get that scared, they've won and you've lost.
