Survey Reveals Dangerous Teen Driving Habits

A survey by AAA and Seventeen Magazine shows a high number of teenage drivers involved in some sort of high risk behavior while they are driving.

It found...
61% admit to risky driving habit
46% of that group admit to text message when driving
51% admit to talking on cell phones while driving

58% of group surveyed admit driving with friends in the car

40% admit driving 10 miles per hour or more over the speed limit

11% admit to drinking or using other drugs before driving

Have you seen teens driving dangerously on the road? Does what their parents do influence how they drive? Leave your comments below.

how about the innocent people who are killed by these teenagers; 80% OF VI0LENT CRIME AND OTHER RECKLESS CRIMES, VEHICULAR VARIETY ARE COMMITTED BY KIDS ; defined , between the ages of 15-25. there are issues of upbringing and the proper respect given to your fellow man. todays society has to wake up. stiffer punishment for these so called KIDS. take the cell phones away , nban texting; what is the point of having that anyway; nobody is speaking to each other any more; they text and speak gramatically poor. the horrible influence the last       15 years of the hip hop subculture , has lowered the bar of intelligence , schoolgrades are pathetic, and obviously crime is an all time high.i agree that the minimum age for driving should be 18 , and kids with criminal activity ; at least 21; with stiffer jail sentences.

Though the survey focused on teens, they are by no means the only persistant violators of cell phone/driving laws.

NYS made a huge deal out of their laws regarding use of hand held cell phones while driving when they enacted the legislation.  The reality is that the lack of consistant and stringent enforcement has resulted in wide-spread apathy regarding the individual's real chances of paying any kind of penalty for violation; that includes teens.

If enforcement were consistent and sustained and cell phones were confiscated as evidence until the court date, people would think twice about violating these laws.

Young drivers aren't the only guilty party in these matters.  Adult drivers are the poor example given for them to follow.  The penalties in cell phone use are simply not enough.  I think a monetary penalty and points on your license is a start.  For young drivers it should lead to suspension of their license.  The insurance companies could take some responsibility.  If the cost of their insurance goes up for each offense you might see a change.  I don't believe raising the driving age is going to change a thing.  Kids don't understand consequence, because most times the parents are not being held responsible for their childrens actions.  The police could be a little more active in curbing youths and adults from cell phone use in automobiles.  If it costs the parents money they will quickly start paying attention.

kids today ,without any value system, over extend the boundries of parential responsibility ; even proper teaching , thers a cancer in society that has to be exterminated.  yes, irresponsible parents should pay some pprice, but what society has done has lowered the bar of personal responsibility due to race and oter fringe extreme groups. definitly , raise the age, ban cell phones, or at least texting in society. lets teach a new generation . hoe to reach out as a human being and also, three things that dont exist with this age group 15-25; integrity , charaxcter, and honor.

ps. i say lock up all the kids untill they are 21 and feed them only bread and water.  when they turn 21, then they can have a license.  Do not mind about my previous two posts with BADLY misspelled words, you see, i am more educated than any of you so i dont have to try to spell right.  I make real money.

Well, here we go!  When you had keys of a car to a child that is not yet mature enough to drive, you have fatalities such as the 5 girls from Rochester area.  NOW, you had them a cell phone and keys and you have instant trouble!  This should head warning to the richer/higher class parents of these teens to stop giving in to their wants such as new cars and cell phones.  We all know all to well what the out come of some of this leads to, death of a young life. The phone should be OFF during school or not taken in the first place, or better yet... let them work and get their OWN cell phone and bill and it should certainly not be allowed on while driving or heres an idea.. WAIT to text or answer the phone when you are NOT driving?  I heard one time there was a law of using a cell phone while driving in New York State, MAYBE the police can actually do something about the usuage now and then or set an example themselves by NOT using THEIRS while on duty?!  Once again, that is NY for you... set a law and don't obied by it nor follow through with it!

after bringing up sound , intelligent, almost briliant insights to this issue, it always takes one lame-***[spelled that right;] . Jack.. you say you make "real money and are highly educated"... maybe you should try and wake up from your night shift at Arby's before trying to post anything and here's another bright idea for you... actually make sense at what you are trying to say and spell it right.  If you were so "well educated" you wouldn't have "typo's" in the first place!  Maybe you should try typing your BS on Word and then copy and paste on here, at least Word has "spell checker."  You obviously have nothing better to do than sit and rip on the people that have the right to "free speach" and comment here on certain topics.  Your shift start at 3 or 11?

What clever pollster was able to dig up this secret information?

All this proves is that nothing has changed since we were kids learning to drive.  There are just new ways to be distracted.  Did you think all the muscle cars of the 60’s & 70’s were so we could go 55 MPH?

See unlike you, Jack... I DO have a real job and in the public eye.  I do not need to use my "real name" to post a response.  Once again, apparently you do not have anything better to do with your time and if you had a REAL job you would not be sitting there posting a smart *** comment about everyone else that has something to say about EACH issue on the news!  If you had a real job, you would only being doing this at lunch, as the people do that have a real job and make "real money."  Before your immaturity strikes you upside the head, I happen to be on my lunch hour :)

Young drivers need to be reminded again and again-- they are driving 3000 lbs of killing machine. It doesn't drive itself.  And yes, the parents are poor teachers, as well.
A young driver, on her prom night, was speeding 55 mph in a 35 zone, watching her boyfriend go up another road instead of watching where she was going, while I was stopped, signal on, waiting to make a left hand turn into my driveway. Nothing I could do--- I saw her coming and prayed.  She ended up on the lawn across the street, no brakes, no skids, that's how close it came.

i think the law for cell phone use is a joke....just drive around and you see people using there phones everywhere....i drove 30 miles to a doctors appointment one day and thought it would be fun to see how many i could find....lets just say i stopped counting at 25 !!! they just dont care, plus the fine is only $100.00
if they want to stop it make it a  mandatory $500.00 fine for the first time, and $1000.00 after that.

I drive 10 plus over the limit on limited acesss roads. Only if the traffic is light. Talk on my cell phone only when traffic is light. Its all a matter of common sense. On 690 or 481 during rush hour. I spend 110 % of my attention on driving. You will never have enough laws on the books to deal with common sense. Is everybody looking for a "nanny state" ? I sure as the H%^^ isn't Raising the driving age won't help. How about making the drivers test harder to pass. Then having to retest every so often? I'm pushing 50,heck the state sore could use the "User fees" from testing

I am 28yrs of age, never had a ticket nor an accident.  I do spend some time taking calls while i am driving.  I am also known to speed, sometimes excessively.  On average i drive 10-12mph over the speed limit if i feel that in doing so i am doing it in a safe and courtious manner.  ALTHOUGH I AM NOT CONDONING IT, i do believe that with everything else in life, you cannot judge someone by what they are doing but rather HOW they are doing it.  P.S.  I read these blogs and, honestly feel disgusted that these people who make up my community feel the need assume that just because one person is doing something that they must fall into "a certain category" and thus they try to vilify them.  Well, vilify me if you wish but it will change nothing.  Thanks.

lets first improve our driving habits as a community first. take each age group and determine where the weak points for each group. no offense, i think our senior citizens should retest every 2 years after 70. more restrictions with the use of cell phones for our youthful drivers. its hard enough to drive today, d3efensive driving is a top priority on the road. somehow we have to reach our youth today to emphasize the importance of safety on the road. everyones life could be a little more peaceful , if we give the effort for changes.

I agree with Tom. F. 100% about retesting senior citizens every 2 years after they hit the 70 mark, even though it somewhat contradicts what i said prior...hehe, nobody's perfect :)

Dear Jack, you always talk about your weight?  I happen to be white for one, 33 years of age with 3 boys (that act WAY more mature than you) I stand 5'10 and finally weigh 180 pounds.. so think again there sunshine.  I do not talk, text nor even look at my cell phone while driving and I wouldn't hit an animal.. even a squirel for that matter, but if you were in front of my vehicle (the way you act on this site and many others I am sure) I would most likely NOT think twice about tapping you a$$, it would be worth the increase in the insurance!

I agree.. Jack (me off) should be banned from any forums.
