How to lower your grocery bills

Post by Rod Wood - Prices for just about everything at the supermarket are soaring. But with a little discipline, you can still reduce your grocery bill and provide your family with nutritious food.

Here are five tips from Consumer Reports:

(1) Make a list of food items your family needs before you go shopping and stick to it!
Walking aimlessly up and down the aisles will encourage you to pick up extra items like cookies and other munchies.

(2) Don't shop when you're hungry! Shoppers tend to be more impulsive, and pickup unnecessary items when shopping on an empty stomach.

(3) Buy store brands. The quality of store branded food items has improved dramatically in recent years and many now compete with major national labels. You can save anywhere from 20 to 50 percent.

(4) Evaluate unit prices. Compare the cost per unit on both big and small packages to see which is a better deal.

(5) Clip coupons. Look through circulars for special deals.

Have other money saving ideas? Send them along.

don't be ashamed to check out the clearance "marked down" items...you can find some really good deals on some good stuff if you look in the right places.

I go shopping every two weeks for a family of five.  I make menu's. clip coupons, and check the circulars.  All of the circulars!!   The most important thing that I do is shop at Wal-Mart.  They comp other stores prices if they are lower.  This process is time consuming, but it's worth it.  I pay between $150 and $180 every two weeks. It's great!

Stock up when sales are on!  When stores have buy one get one free sales or clearances, I usually buy extra.  Then I thank myself for doing so when I see the price went back up the next week :-)

And don't just evaluate your grocery bill, evaluate everything you eat!  If you buy lunch when you're at work everyday, consider how much you might save if you bought some extras and made your own lunch.  A bottle of soda costs about $1.50, but on a good special you can get a whole 12 pack of cans for $2.50!

Not only should you check out the ads every week, but clip the coupons in Sunday's paper.  If an item is on sale, and you have a coupon, it's double savings!!

If your looking for fresh vegetables Aldi's is the best.  It even outranks Walmarts as far as prices for fresh vegetables.  Walmart lettuce: $1.48  Aldi's: $1.19,  3pk of zucchini at Aldi's : .99$  Walmarts $1.99 a pound.  You just have to know where to shop and who has the best prices.  Walmarts does have a lot of great prices on other items but this week the vegetable sale is the best at Aldi's :)
