Post by Carrie Lazarus - We learned a lot about colon cancer this week during the research for our in-depth coverage on Thursday. 105 people will die from colon cancer in Onondaga County this year. That’s a frightening statistic. The good news is, colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. Colonoscopy can find and remove growths before they turn cancerous. The screening is recommended for people at age 50, earlier if you have a family history of colon cancer. Just this week, the American Cancer Society endorsed two other screening methods; virtual colonoscopy, which is done using a CT scan, and DNA stool testing, which you can do at home. The Onondaga County health department can help you get screened, even if you don’t have health insurance. Call them to find out if you qualify for a free test kit during business hours at 435-2225.
