Looking to lose weight this winter?

Posted by Rod Wood - Here are six habits of successful dieters, according to Consumer Reports ShopSmart magazine.

(1) Eat breakfast. 78 percent of the successful losers at the National Weight Control Registry say they eat breakfast, typically cereal and fruit.

(2) Bore yourself thin. Since variety stimulates the appetite, the more monotonous your diet, the less you'll eat.

(3) Cut out some carbs. Some people can safely lose weight on an Atkins-style diet that cuts out most carbohydrates, but you don't have to be that strict. Successful losers in the registry ate plenty of carbs while limiting fat and portion size.

(4) Fill up on low-density foods. Start your meals with a low-calorie soup or salad and eat main dishes that are full of vegetables. Such "low-density" foods have fewer calories per bite and have been clinically shown to help with weight loss.

(5) Crank up the activity. Do whatever it takes to get exercise like using the stairs instead of the elevator, or parking far away.

Registry participants report doing about an hour a day of moderate-intensity exercise, like brisk walking.

(6) Weigh yourself weekly. Successful dieters take steps to lose that extra pound before it has a chance to multiply.

I think the first step we need to take,  is stop trying to fight temptations in your own home there are enough them out at work or restaurants.  We need to realize the "junk" we buy is exactly that...junk.  We have the availability and resources to purchase "good for you" food and snacks as well.  I do the shopping for the family for crying out loud and we mom's need to pledge "I am going to stop dooming our diet" by not even bringing that "junk" into our home. Your whole family will benefit.  You made not drop bazillions of pounds but you will all feel better.  Add time together as a family burning calories playing WII or sledding or walking....you'll all feel good!

No matter what "diet" you may try, it all boils down to this....3500 calories equals one pound.  You HAVE to reduce your calorie intake by that much to lose a pound. And if you eat that much more than your body uses, you'll gain.  Your body uses calories everyday just to exist...to breathe, to digest food, to walk, etc.  That is called the Basic Metabolic Rate. You eat to replace those calories burned.  If you burn 3000 calories daily and eat 2000 calories daily, you lose 1000 calories daily.  It will take you approx. 3-4 days to lose a pound at that rate.  If you eat 4000 calories daily, you'll gain a pound in 3-4 days.  And the way most eat, that's not hard to do.  Go to Burger King everyday ....you get the idea.  So....fill up on the good stuff.  Make those calories count.  Weigh everyday to see your progress.  Drink 8 glasses of water daily to hydrate.  And exercise to burn off even more calories.  Join a support group like TOPS to keep yourself accountable.  Good luck!

Stop thinking of it as a "diet," it's a life style change. The choice is yours, mine, ours, however you look at it. I agree with Karen, TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a great support group. Also, eating breakfast is an important neccessity of each day. Step it up is another good thing, getting in those 10,000 steps each day helps. So get moving!

The way I look at it, we are all gonna die from something anyway.  I don't approve of being obese, but enjoy what you can while you can!
